S3 isn't going to draw back the audiences who have given up on Nu Trek
How about trying to keep those who like “NuTrek” (which is really just Trek—like all the rest of it)?

Treating it as a zero-sum game is asinine (and is highly unlikely to be the show runners’ intent). The fact that YOU didn’t like the Raffi story element does NOT signify that NO ONE likes it (I, for one, quite enjoy it so far). Gatekeeping is a poor way to expand a fanbase. And I am extremely confident the makers of Trek have that goal as their highest priority.

Her scenes ground the franchise. I don’t think trek has ever tackled drug addiction like this before. It can be relatable to those who have gone through it before

One would hope by the 25th century, the Federation (or at least Starfleet) has the medical means to cure such addictions among their officers, whether it be a chemical or mental dependency.

Her storyline isn't exactly groundbreaking or nuanced thus far in how it's handling drug-addiction. It's cliche.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt though, because I've seen enough reviewers of have seen the full 10 that says it pays off eventually.

You're taking it too personally.

You're taking it too personally.
That you don’t like that story element? I couldn’t care less. Self-appointed gatekeeping of “The Way Things Ought To Be”? I loathe that attitude in ALL instances I see it. And frankly, like being a fan, what one deems sufficient to take personally is self-selecting, requiring no one’s permission or advice.

I kind of didn't like the implication that a drug addiction meant any drug was interchangeable. Obviously there's such a thing as an addictive personality, but Sneed gave Raffi a drug she had never taken before, which shouldn't have hit her dopamine receptors in the same manner.

Like, if a recovering alcoholic smokes a joint, they haven't failed at controlling their addiction.

You clearly care, but you shouldn't. Because this is a review thread and I'm well within my right to be critical of something that doesn't work thus far.

Even within a season I'm admittedly biased towards enjoying (S3). Objectively, my '7' is a fair rating.

The good news is, like I said earlier, those who have seen the full 10 episodes on YT assure us that it will pay off and ultimately work by the end. So I await the episodes ahead.

.

I’m sure they can cure the physical symptoms with some kind of compound in a hypospray but the psychological ones can’t be as easy otherwise Deanna and Ezri would be out of a job.

I don't think this is canon, but the Narada was Borgified between when she went back in time until Nero and friends escaped the Klingon prison. (All Deleted Scenes). The Shrike could be what the ship looked like originally.

So, totally different you mean? ;-)

DS9 handled the concept of drug addiction really well (better than this) with the Jem'Hadar and the Ketracel White. That was actually interesting.

How the Founders engineered them to be addicted to the White in order to ensure subservience. And what happens to them when they don't get their fix.

Saw this pointed out on Reddit, but when Picard tells Jack he has 18 minutes left, there was 18 minutes left in the episode, heh.

The borg stuff came from the countdown comic, not a deleted scene.

Yeah no, they didn't. handle it better.

FYI, I am keeping a spreadsheet with the scores people are giving each episode in this thread. So far, ep 1 has 271 votes with an average score of 8.38. Ep 2 has 196 votes with an average score of 7.91. We will see if the score changes with more votes, but it looks like ep 2 scored a bit less than ep 1.

An interesting observation from the trailer is that Worf brutally headbutts Raffi next week;

It's going to be a rough one.

I think perhaps you are ignoring the fact that one has to be willing to be cured of an addiction in order for any medical help to succeed.
Plenty of addicts are helped through medical means even today, but if they aren't willing to try to stop using, nothing anybody does will help.

Changing ones mindset, can't be cured by other's.
Other's can assist, but if the willingness isn't there, then no medical cure will hold.
Raffi is a perfect example of how insidious addiction is, she IS willing to stop using, but we see her constantly being tempted to go back to using.

And using the Jem'Hadar as an example is a false flag.
They were specifically designed from the get go to be physically dependent on the Ketracel.
They didn't choose to indulge.

Crusher having a baby during her absence in season 2 would be a fairly ridiculous retcon (although it would be consistent with how old Jack looks). What the heck did she do with the baby once she returned to the Enterprise? Did she get Pulaski to raise him? ….actually, I would rather LOVE that plot twist.
