Yet he did it anyway.
The question is: When did he take it?

I say that because even for James T, Kirk had he survived and made it to around the age Picard is 'now'; there would come a time when he realized his days of galivanting through space in a Starship as a Captain would be behind him; and he would finally accept another promotion to Admiral (assuming the promotion was offered after his first demotion back to Captain rank.)

He was promoted to Admiral to lead the Romulan evacuation.
I know there's a press kit that states this, but is it considered the canon reason he was promoted? Moreover, I interpret the wording of the kit as stating that he was promoted first and then given the assignment of evacuating Romulus. The assignment might not have been the reason for his promotion, it just might have been his first assignment as an admiral.

Sneed. Profit's his name. Beheading's his game.

This reminds me... have we seen Ferengi before with head tattoos that weren't military ranks?

I was a bit weirded out by him having facial hair though, that definitely seems like a first with Ferengi.

They did add parallel lines to the inside of Ferengi ears that weren't there between 1987 and 2001. I think that's a nod to the Ferengi makeup seen in the 32nd century on DSC.

Best scene?
Worf selling a set of ginsu knives.. Buy showing how sharp they are.

Actually quite a good episode, and even with Raffi stuff.. And i usually despise Raffi.. Off all the new crew.. She gets to keep on going? Ugh.. But pleasantly surprised of how good her scenes are .. So far..

Anybody else have very bright blow out on the VFX? Like the scenes were rendered darker.. But then someone brightened them after all the effects were done and blown out the brights with it??

Titan still looks fake as well.. Ugh.. Enterprise had better ship vfx 20 years ago..

Shaw's change of heart at the end of the episode bothers me because it was already established that Jack was Beverly's son. But suddenly when he's Picard's son it's more important to keep him safe. Is this show as "empowering" to Beverly's character as the showrunners were hyping? Because it doesn't feel like it so far, and her having an action scene to supposedly show otherwise now feels like a gimmick.

As Shaw points out, they only had Jack's word that he was Beverly's son, since she was in no shape to confirm. It took Picard confirming it, after a moment of silent communion with Beverly, for that unsubstantiated claim to become accepted as fact.

The soundtrack on this season is awesome.

Klingon battle theme (by Jerry Goldsmith) when Worf showed up was nice.

Worf with white bear and eyebrows look a bit like KI-ADI-MUNDI jedi knight.

Will Wheaton must be jealous of Jack.

I liked the episode a lot. Particularly the way Beverly and Picard had that conversation with only their eyes.

One small nitpick. "I believe it's afternoon in the Sol system." Are there no time zones in the Star Trek universe?

Quick thoughts:

1. I’m really coming around to Shaw. It seemed like he really didn’t want to give up Jack, and was really hoping the time given would give Picard and Riker the opportunity to cook up some plan to get them all out of the mess, but when push came to shove at the end, he was pretty much, “ah hell, here we go” and took the needed action. He seems very multi-faceted, and he’s quickly becoming a reason to keep tuning in.

2. I have to admit, I adore how utterly gleeful Vadic is. I get that there are going to be layers to this character, but for right now, a villain chewing the scenery with panache is just FUN.

3. I’m starting to love the Titan-A. I have a soft spot for those kind of “awkward” looking ships.

4. The contrivances in Raffi’s subplot are a bit much. It seems like everybody is on M’Talas Prime, and having her husband there was jarring. That being said, I liked her interactions with Sneed, and I hope we get a bolder, more confident Raffi moving forward.

5. Worf’s entrance was sublime, and he has aged like a fine wine. My wife was like, “he is such a gorgeous man” and I wholeheartedly agreed.

6. The son angle is tired and played out, but the way they revealed it between Beverly and Picard was just perfect.

7. Riker continues to be a delight.

Hoping they don’t drag things out too much in getting the rest of the band back together.
