Re: Star Trek: Phoenix - Seattle - update

Our composer has finished our theme music for the series. His work will be familiar to those who watched some of the series in productions. You can check the theme out by visiting the following link.

Would love to hear back from you all. Volunteers are welcome.

The main title music sounds great!

What more can you tell us about the premise of the series? Who are the characters? The web site has little more than a list of names and positions.

Unforunately, the E.P. (executive producer) wants to keep things under wraps for awhile longer to keep people wanting to know more. I can tell this much: ship design, uniforms desgn, and of course theme music have been decided on.

So far in the works: our staff including the E.P. are working on writing the first four episodes. We had someone suggest a story idea via the website; to which it was decided to let the person give it a shot.

Listen to the podcasts that are on site if you have not yet. The E.P. has given some hints

I guess you could call me the forum representive for the production. We have received over 300 hits with our posting on Hidden Frontiers forums.

Rick

I am crossposting this from another board with permission. An large update about our series by our Executive Producer.

********
Greetings,

This is Leo Roberts, Executive Producer of Star Trek: Phoenix. I would like to thank everyone for their comments and questions. A special thank you to Shadow for posting the show here and also answering as many questions as he has. He provided me with a status update today regarding your questions, so I thought I would jump on over to this forum and answer your questions and give you more info about the show.

First, the show is tentatively scheduled to premiere on January 1, 2009 with fliming in November and casting to fall somewhere in early October. I set the release date last January and I really hope we make New Year's Day, however, if I feel that the quality of the pilot isn't up to par or your standards as fans, I will press forward and move the release date. This isn't all about quantity but about quality especially when we are aiming for a 90-minute premiere. Our intent is to have 60-minute episodes as well. In addition to casting, we will also be looking for voice actors. Not only for the computer voice but also for episode 2.

The theme music was released but not considered a wide release I guess you could say. Matt Milne, our composer, was promoting his site recently to generate more interest and so I posted his information and link on the main STP site. So, please feel free to venture to his site and download the Phoenix theme. Please keep in mind, this theme was created before the show entered into pre-production so it may be slightly altered when we finished the opening credits sequence. Its all about flow and how Matt feels about the vid transition vs. the theme.

Jön Johnson is our art director & costume designer. As Shadow indicated, he provided me with 5 designs all with the thought of having something between the uniforms of Star Trek: Nemesis and VOY episode "Relativity". Out of the five, I narrowed it down to two and had a really difficult time deciding. We ultimately went with a uniform that is very similar to what has been seen in TNG episode "All Good Things..." and VOY episode "Endgame". We will also be using the Commbadge seen in both of those episodes. The other uniform is more dressy to be honest and we may either use it for the dress uniform or for a transition from current design over to the second design half-way through the series; I haven't decided yet. The prototype uniform has been created and I haven't had a chance to meet with Jön yet to see it in person.

Now for a few updates...the creator of the Phoenix is Daniel McCraken. The Phoenix is 100% model complete and the detailing/texturing, etc is around 70% complete at this time. Our other modelist, Mike Mower, is working on several other ships for the pilot as we speak. Props Master, Andy Bennett and Props Supervisor, Chris Lubin, are at work creating new props for the show including new PADD's for example. They will also be working on a new phaser & tricorder. Unfortunately, everything is in prototype mode so I am unable to provide you with photos of anything, including the uniform. The Phoenix herself will also remain under wraps until this fall. The design of the Phoenix needs to be explained prior to release; it is very different from anything we've seen to date.

If you'd like to learn more about the show, we have two podcasts available for download. You can download via iTunes or through the links on the site. Just visit the Downloads section for more information. In the last podcast, STP 102, I briefly described the first four episodes and what they will somewhat be about. The pilot titled "Clandestine Rendezvous" will spend most of the time introducing the main characters, getting to know them a little, and showing the Phoenix herself. There is a sub-plot included that will extend throughout the first season but won't be in every episode. In the pilot, fans will get to see one new type of technology developed and its something very different. The second episode, tentatively titled "Derelict Apparations" is penned by Phoenix creator, Daniel McCraken and myself. This will be the first Trek horror story to my knowledge. It won't be blood & guts but we are trying to make it as scary as we can. All I can tell you is that its about the discovery of a derelict Federation starship that dates back to TOS and well...you'll have to wait for the rest.

Episode three is going to introduce a beloved character from TNG and personally, I can't wait. The story will be penned by Alex Feterman and myself. I can't tell you yet what the title will be because it will give away the "character". Episode four is titled "Inaugural Peril" and will be penned by myself and one other individual. This episode will introduce the new villan race for the Phoenix. This introduction will not be an all out war or invasion of the Alpha Quadrant. Star Trek: Phoenix will follow the successful formula introduced by TNG. I want fans to be able to jump into the series where ever they may be and still be able to get the show. Of course, I want new fans to go back and watch the old epsiodes but you get the general idea. I don't want the show to be like BSG or Lost where you MUST start from the beginning to understand the premise of the show. Getting back to the villans...I can't say much about them but I can tell you they will be very interesting. Something that we haven't seen before and we are putting a ton of thought into the creation of this race and why they exist and why they will become the new villans.

Well, that's all I can tell you for now. Please feel free to continue asking questions and posting comments. Shadow will be happy to answer.

"From the ashes of time comes the birth of a new saga"

Re: Star Trek: Phoenix - Seattle (Update#1)

Ok guys! You have been wanting to know more. So here it is an UPDATE!
***
Interest in Star Trek: Phoenix is on the rise so with that, the executive producer has released additional information about the pilot and also a few updates.

The pilot titled “Clandestine Rendezvous” will include the introduction of the main characters along with the Phoenix herself. In addition, will be a sub-plot that will run through the first season and conclude in Season Two. Here is a bit of the Phoenix history that will not be included in the pilot:
The year is 2419; the Federation and Romulan Empire begin negotiations to create a new peace treaty and dissolve the Treaty of Algeron due to successful joint missions over the past 50 years leading back to the Dominion Wars. Around the same time frame, Starfleet Advanced Technologies is commissioned by Starfleet Intelligence to begin a new class starship that will incorporate new forms of technology advances. The initiative is called the Ascension Project and is designed and constructed at a new Starfleet
Intelligence installation called Lygoa Station.

One year into the construction, the Ascension designers embark upon a new road of starship design and present Starfleet Command with a concept of incorporating Starfleet and Romulan design together in one ship. Due to the volatility of the peace negotiations, the Romulan delegation approves the design viewing it as a gesture of goodwill furthering the peace process. The USS Ascension is refit 1 year later and at the behest of Praetor Bevoral, the Ascension is renamed USS Phoenix based on its gallant history. Starfleet, in honor of the Phoenix, retain its predecessor’s construction number and extend it: NCC-65420-A.

One of the reasons that the Phoenix herself has been kept hidden is due to her purpose. She is not an ordinary starship and is the only one of her kind. The other reason is that the Phoenix designer, Daniel McCraken, is still working on the fine details of the exterior.

Story editor/staff writer, Rick Rattie, has been creating the series forum and is hoping to have it online in the weeks to come. Please check back in the near future for further details. Also be sure to download and listen to the series monthly podcast. STP Podcast 103 will be released on June 30 with interviews involving new staff members and updates to the show. To download, please visit the Downloads section of the Star Trek: Phoenix website.

We would also like to welcome our newest staff members:

Jön Johnson has come on board as our Art Director and Costume Designer. He has been working on our new uniform and a prototype has been created. Jön will also be featured in this month’s podcast where he will talk more about the uniform design.

Mike Mower is a 3D modeler and has joined us from Maryland where he operates his own design studio. Mike is currently working on two ships that will be featured in the pilot in addition to the Phoenix. We value Mike’s time and are grateful he is on board.

Alex Feterman joins us from San Jose, Costa Rica as a staff writer. Alex will be writing the third episode of Season One that will introduce a beloved, recurring character from TNG. Alex is a long time fan of Star Trek and looks forward to contributing to the series.

Joseph Said has joined us as our first scientific consultant. Joseph is current teaching chemistry, physics, and biology at the International British school in Cairo, Egypt while pursuing his masters in bioinformatics; a fusion of biology and computer science.

Isaac Curtis has come on board as a staff writer and is currently pursuing his masters in Creative Writing. He will pursue an MFA in Creative Writing before completing his doctorate English/Creative Writing.

Chris Lubin is an award winning model maker and has been enjoying his craft now for 32 years. He has joined us as Props Supervisor and will be working with Props Master, Andy Bennett. Chris is currently working on several new prototypes of PADD’s and tricorders.

Star Trek: Phoenix is now available on Facebook and MySpace so please check out both and add them today. Two wallpaper editions as well as banners are now available for download.

Greetings Star Trek Phoenix dude,

On Myspace, I was approached by a fellow named Rick:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=18709380

Since I am currently involved in my own fan film project, he thought maybe I could help out on yours. Here's a sample of some of the set work we have done using mostly scrap:

http://theeyeofdarkness.com/
http://www.theeyeofdarkness.com/production.html

If I were to become involved, it would be as (possibly) either writer, director, production designer and last on the list, actor, as I have a long history of experience in that.

In addition, I can help provide you with Hollywood level Special-FX, which would combine any and all of the work being done by those using Blender. We are already doing something similar with our fan film already.

A little background on this: I once worked at a place called AN/FX in Portland Oregon. There were 4 of us who did most of the grunt work; Craig Paup, Vince Backeberg, Hal Hickle (who some might recall won an Oscar for I.L.M.'s work on Pirates of the Caribbean 3 the year it came out). Yes, Hal went to I.L.M. Vince went to Will Vinton Studios, Craig bought An/FX (and owns the company still, under the name Digital FX Group) and I went into independent film production.

Craig Paup is one of my oldest and dearest friends. He and I were inseparable during the time when Empire and Jedi were first run in theaters and became friends through our love of sci-fi/model building and filmmaking.

Craig remains in contact with the folks at I.L.M. and often upgrades his own systems and hardware according to their specs. But he remains a hardcore geek at heart and is helping me with my FX on our fan film.

In his spare time for fun, he often models ships from both Star Wars and Star Trek.

You see where I'm going with this?

I have already discussed this possibility with Craig and he is willing, if certain criteria are met to warrant his and my involvement. So, it is not an idle boast when I tell you that I can get you I.L.M. quality FX for your series.

Additionally, I have a plethora of other phenomenal ideas that could potentially take your series to the n'th level in terms of production design and story concepts (which could be excellent fodder for story ideas).

Just to get you curious, in reply to CubOfJudahsLion 's comment: "You could build a set out of hardboard, print off renders of panels on to plastic film sheets, the put a few LED's behind them, for flashy lights."

I have a better console idea than this that will be dirt cheap and will dazzle even the hardest of hard core Trekkers, which will only require a minimum of building.

One very important question is: do you have a location(s) with lots of empty space for shooting ship interiors? In your garages perhaps? 2-3 car garages are best (a good excuse to clear out the crap that's been collecting there).

And don't worry so much about sound recording, as you'll most likely be ADR-ing most of it anyways.

Let's begin a dialogue gentlemen!

PS: What ever became of those parasites that were introduced in the ST:TNG episode "Conspiracy"?

I liked Matt Milne's Helena theme. I like this one, too. A good omen.

Best of luck to your production, Mr. Rattie!

Re: Star Trek: Phoenix - Seattle -UPDATE

Hey gang:

Richard here from Star Trek: Phoenix here! First of all the poll on our website was a hypothetical question and I can tell you this much: has nothing to do with our series.

Phoenix is moving along at literally warp speed. Scripts are being written, ships models being built, uniforms: you name it we have it going on.
We just literallly signed a deal today that will have major effects on our production. I cannot get into details at this time but July's Podcast will have me making the official announcement. We will be posting that information to the various forums sometime thereafter. If you listened to June's Pocast there are some hints to what its about. Leo mentioned that I will be making the announcement in Julys podcast. We have an additional announcement for the podcast.

Keep checking our website for the podcast and here for the announcements. Sorry for the mystery but got to keep you wanting more.

Thanks Mallory:

Fan production take alot of work. Some of us are new to it all aka working behind the scenes. We are moving along. Alot of behind the scenes stuff happening. We are hoping to start the casting process this Fall.

The Forums are not an easy task; we were looking at the paid ones but I started tinkering around with this free one and we think it turned out quite well. We pay $5 a month to keep advertisements off the page.
