STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTube

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

^^^As if Scotty couldn't have poured himself smaller drinks or otherwise controlled the amount he ingested. That's what's ridiculous.

I think this points out a major fact that most Trek fans don't seem to get - TOS and the people working on it didn't take themselves too seriously. It's just an old TV show meant to appeal to the masses.
You'll pardon my incredulity that you or we can speak as to what "most Trek fans" "get" about anything any more than I can speak as to what "most gay video game designers" think.

Plus, if you follow the thread I was poking at Pony's goofy reply to Dennis about the necessity of drinking alien invaders under the table, not nitpicking the episode.

Maybe not ALL Deltans are bald?

That's not what I was saying. I was saying that there is no reason for the child of an alien, impregnated by an alien, and who has telepathic abilities to appear Human.

Didn't somebody say earlier that Lt. Isel wears wigs to fit in better among the crew? (Ilia, presumably, had no such hangups.) And of course Irska would follow Mommy's example.

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

This was a really good episode of Phase 2. Here are a few of my thoughts.

The bridge seemed especially dark. I suspect this was a YouTube encoding issue.

I thought that Ensign Isel came off as a bit too shrill for an officer speaking to her commanding officer. Believe me, I understand about mothers and their children, but it seemed like a 2012 sensibility more than a 1966 or even 1970's. It took me out of the episode a bit. (TNG managed this better with Troi's stand on the pregnancy, I thought.)

Ayla Cordell did a very fine job as Irska.

I love John Kelly as McCoy. I hope he returns to film more episodes.

My one real issue was Isel's reference to Deltan orgasms. I think of Trek as a family show, and I am comfortable sharing most episodes of TOS with my young daughter, but I really didn't want to explain this to her. Of course, I viewed the episode beforehand, so I just skipped that line of dialogue when we watched it together.

The effects were very good. We subsequently watched the TNG version and the Phase 2 effects were obviously superior, in my opinion.

Hearty thanks to the Phase 2 team for bringing us more adventures of our favorite characters.

A few replies to my fellow posters:

I often fall asleep late at night while reading, and it's often after one alcoholic beverage. Sometime, I haven't even finished that one drink or the snack I made for myself. I suspect a video of me at that point would look a lot like Scotty's shot did.

We can't really expect a fan-film actress to shave her head, can we? I thought the wigs were an acceptable explanation of things.

In fairness, I've worn my glasses to bed before, not realizing I still had them on. :p

I'm still not getting you.

Ilia was the first Deltan we ever saw, and SHE looked 100% human. Why wouldn't the child of a 100% human-looking Deltan look human like other Deltans?

Maybe I'm just foggy today, but this isn't computing.

There's this dialogue from the episode:

McCoy: Well, the child checks out as human in almost every respect.

Kirk: No Deltan characteristics?

McCoy: None that I can detect.

Kirk: Well how the hell can that be?

McCoy: I don't know.

Ah. That makes sense.

I was interpreting "appears human" as "looks like human". That's what threw me off.

Yeah, I forgot to say "in McCoy's scans."

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

During her late-30's, early-40's, my mom lost most of her hair due to nerve conditions and some outside influences.

She wore wigs every day during that time, and on any number of occasions would simply be so tired at bedtime she'd either forget to, or not bother to, remover the wig.

So, I've personally seen a woman sleeping, numerous times, in a wig.

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

I never understood why the original script made the titular child "human" in the first place, except maybe to avoid the bald-cap issue on a child actor.

When McCoy announced the kid was human, I thought: "Ah, it'll be interesting to see why this is so. What an intriguing plot point."

Still interesting and intriguing. But unfortunately irrelevant to the story.

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

I'm not sure why people are assuming Scotty got extremely intoxicated and passed out.
It's quite common for adults to enjoy alcohol in moderation.
If anything, the half eaten food seems to indicate that he sat down for a snack and a nightcap, and fell asleep before he could ingest very much of either one.
-just my opinion.

I guess because he's lying there cradling an empty bottle of liquor next to a half eaten donut. The image can been seen to say "drank straight from the bottle until he passed out before he could finish his donut."

That, by the way, does not convey "moderation" or "a nightcap." It conveys "a problem." Humor is subjective and not everyone laughs at the same things. But when I saw the image, I rolled my eyes. It's too easy a joke, like smacking his head on a beam or something.

Maybe, because of Scotty, synthahol was invented.

Probably because, sadly enough, too many folks have seen exactly this behavior on the part of people they're close to and associate it with a great deal that's unseen and unremarked upon here.

Some Trek fans can be preposterously literal and will argue against any inference or subtext at all, despite the fact that it's part of all but the most simpleminded fiction and storytelling. They'll tell you that Kirk, for example, didn't get laid much during the TOS stories because they don't recognize the significance of judicious and necessary cutting and euphemism.

That may be an unavoidable slop-over from endless canon debates, where an essential premise for many is "if it's not actually shown onscreen it didn't happen."

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

I think it was just lazy. All you needed was a couple of clearly labeled technical journals and a set of bagpipes nearby to let folks know it was Scotty.

"Star Trek Phase II: We do it the lazy way!"

Come on Greg, you can do better than that. There's no need to be passive-aggressive, even with the trolls, and especially with a fair criticism.

I think he was making a joke. Didn't seem passive-aggressive to me. Unless, of course, YOU are also making a joke, in which case I must be dense.
