STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTube

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

You have to walk before you can run. "Boring TV style" is economical, efficient and utilitarian. It helps to minimize the likelihood of screwing up and getting a lot of stuff that doesn't cut together. As the resources available to hobbyist movie-makers improve and they get more experience, there's a time to try for something proud - maybe later.

But then, I say that having managed to screw up pretty simple TV-style set-ups myself.

Wow.

Phase II guys: There were a couple of things I had problems with in this ep, but seeing the critiques in the rest of the thread I've decided I'm not gonna pile on, because the one thing that's still true from the first time I started watching these films is that they're still more entertaining than anything that's come outta official Trek in ages and still the best fanfilms I've seen, warts and all.

Bravo.

Thanks for the nice comments.

One day, we'll make a perfect episode. Then you'll see--you'll *all* see!

^^^I hope I didn't come across as piling on. That's why I qualified my statement by noting that there was an unusual amount of thoughtful critique as opposed to piling on (which I agree there is far too much of when it comes to the reactions to some fan films.)
For once, I think Dennis and I see eye to eye...scary.... :)

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

I have yet to find a single post in this thread that would constitute anything other than thoughtful, constructive criticism (at best) or personal, non-insulting opinion (at worst.) As far as review threads go, this one's vanilla.

No, no, the critiques were valid. It's not that I think the ep was being unduly bashed. I just don't care about the problems, because I basically watched it straight through with my eyes like this . I can excuse a multitude of gaffs if I can get an hour or so of pure enjoyment out of what I'm watching, which is what I got from "The Child", and what I generally get from Phase II stories.

My post was meant to convey in a goodnatured way that we understand that there will at long last be no complaints or critiques of our episodes the day we at long last create a perfect episode. We know that people need to and want to weigh in on the subject they feel so passionate about. We take it in stride. More than that, we actually welcome the input. We sometimes revise our edits of episodes (to the degree that we can) based on feedback.

Well, the fact is that we sometimes build up idealized memories of TOS (and to a lesser extent the other shows). It's easy to forget that there were mistakes, oversights and outright gaffes in all aspects of every one of those shows. (It's kind of like the old baseball player who said "the older I get the better I was".) We also tend to forget that TOS and all other TV shoes are disposable entertainment, made under extreme pressure by people who do it full-time for a living and they still make their share of mistakes. I think remembering that helps to keep the issues we may spot in fan productions a little more in context.

What's really been a pleasure for me is seeing the constant improvement of Phase II in all aspects from writing to acting and technical standards. I hope I don't sound condescending when I say that I think it's a HUGE compliment to say they were good enough not to get in the way of the enjoyment of the episodes. Making a TV show is an incredibly difficult undertaking, as anyone who has tried has quickly found out.

I'm most proud about our overall growth curve rather than where any one episode falls on that curve. The other thing I'm proud about is that we seem to have achieved some level to our production values that now enables most viewers to suspend their disbelief for the most part and get suckered into thinking, at least for an hour, that they are watchng something that is somewhat Star Trek-like--and to get some enjoyment from that.

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

One day, we'll make a perfect episode. Then you'll see--you'll *all* see!

In my humble opinion, "World Enough and Time" was quite exceptional. To be perfectly honest, none of the episodes that followed have engaged me in the same way. When I watch WEAT, I BELIEVE I am watching Star Trek...even my wife loved it. We were both in tears at the end.

WEAT was TOS yet it didn't go out of its way to copy the old show note for note like later episodes have. WEAT felt more genuine for having done that.

I know James is a fan of using the classic music cues but I think it often really hurts New Voyages more than it helps. Those cues were made with different actors portraying the characters in mind. Hearing the TOS music cues actually pulls me out of the episodes. If that makes sense. WEAT had a beautiful score that truly enhanced the emotional impact resonating within that episode.

The right music can take a great performance and simply knock it out of the galaxy. Such was the case with all the performances in WEAT. I can't praise that episode enough.

I know it's definitely a lot easier to use the old scores, the crew doesn't have "all the time in the world", but even if the episodes contained a few more new compositions, I think it would really help sell the episodes a bit more.

Just my opinion though...no more important than the next feller. :)

I thought the whole thing was damned lovely, myself.

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

First off I want to say that any discussion that takes place in a constructive, thoughtful and passionate place such as TrekBBS, is never a bad thing! I think all of the feed back is thoughtful and respectful as well and usefull! On the other side of things, I just wanted to give my two cents on what an amazing enterprise (Shudder forgive the wordplay ) this whole Phase 2 Production seems like. The hard work, dedication and obvious love of this series is very apperant in every outing of this fan film series! to a further extent, the representatives who post here come across as nothing but first class individuals who bring enjoyment to lukers like me with their contributions of information and entertainment! I will end my rant with a big thank you to all involved for the enjoyment we get out of the fantastic FAN films! Well done!!!:bolian:

That is the thing I find most impressive. From a modern perspective, as somebody who is too young to have held the lower expectations that those watching its original run had, even the original show has a few moments that take you out of it, but those are getting fewer and fewer in your productions.

The sets, the lighting, a good bit of the acting, and especially the FX are all really impressive. If there is anything that really takes me out of the show it's finding myself marvelling at what your productions can achieve these days.

I've read the criticism, and I can't say that on reflection I disagree with all of it. There are some people commenting who work in the industry and clearly know what they are talking about. But as a layman who subconciously recognises flaws but doesn't tend to actively critique as I watch, it feels to me as though I am watching a real TV show, and that is a hell of an achievement. I can't make it through 5 minutes of an average fan production. ;)

Well done to all involved, can't wait for the next one.

Thanks. That's very nice of you to say. As I so often say about our Phase II productions, we are not allowed to bring in one cent from these things (that's gross, not net), so the only reward we get is from people who say "that was good" or "I liked it" or "that sure felt like real Star Trek."

It's really quite a challenge for us: Star Trek has become bigger than life. Plus the audiences' sensibilities have evolved in 45 years. How faithful should we make our show? How sophisticated should we make it for a 2012 audience? And, of course, every fan and viewer of our series knows the exact right answer to that question--and lets us know. Generally, the weaknesses each episode has (and they are always there and they are always different) are things we already know about but we were stymied for one reason or another. It would be like telling a marathon runner "You know, if you tried running faster your finishing time would be better." A knowledge deficit usually isn't the problem.

So we keep plugging away, hoping that our collective efforts will yield a general upward trend in our production efforts--with occasional pitfalls along the way of course.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the input; we welcome it--and the only bad publicity is *no* publicity. Please tell all your friends. (Oh, and you can donate some money to us--that's always great.)

Slightly different edit of the Teaser is now up on YouTube (so the old Teaser link no longer works). Please use this one:

Does anyone know how to spell the word Spock got from Xon? I'd like to know for my Fan Film Friday review.

Re: STAR TREK PHASE II: "The Child" Full Episode Now Released on YouTu

I notice Sulu still says "put it on the main viewer" right after we've seen it on the main viewer. Oops.

Wow!! With each episode you release, I get lost in the past... the cast and crew are doing a great job. John Kelly has done a super job of becoming Dr. McCoy.... and James again is Kirk!!!! What a treat. Thank you all.
