Star Trek Phase II Revisited

Last year I got a thread going about Planet of the Titans and tried to collect odds and ends about it. I'd like to take a shot at doing that for Phase II.

Specifically, I'd like to point to sourced/reference-able materials about the prospective show, not just rumor and bits half-remembered.

So, to kick it off, here's what Gene Roddenberry had to say about the Star Trek movie becoming a new TV show for Paramount's first (failed) attempt at becoming a TV network (courtesy the blog Fortress of Solitude west Coast). It features a good look at a concept drawing of the drydock that was being built for the TV movie before it transmogrified into TMP.

The irony is that because of magazine lead-time, by the time this was being published (February, as the month on the cover of a magazine like Starlog was usually the month after it hit the stands), TMP was only weeks away from being announced (the press conference was March 28, 1978).

It is a very interesting read, albeit I now fall into the category of 'bits half-remembered'. Still, it's on a shelf at home somewhere if anybody wants to know anything specific.

I'd like to read the other scripts, in addition to the two printed that book, which were written, but I don't know if they're in the public domain or not?

How do you mean? As in available to read someplace or no longer under Copyright?

Scripts from the series pop-up from time to time on sites like E-Bay. Couldn't tell you if they are legal or not, though.

Personally, I have copies of the two-part episode Kitumba which, IMO, would have been a really outstanding piece of Trek if it had been made. I wish they would have made it as a follow-up to TMP. Will be interested to see the upcoming fan-film version of Kitumba.

The first, never seen them on the net anywhere.

How so? From what I remember it presents a very different view of the Klingons to those in TNG and on.

It does indeed. but back in '79 or '80, TNG didn't exist yet so it would have been just fine.

Have you talked to Patty Wright at Star Trek Phase II? If you are going to collaborate, she may be able to point you to some resources you need. There are people on the team who have an amazing amount of knowledge, including much background staff.

The Ed Gross book THE LOST YEARS (no relation to pocket novel) is full of good phase II info ... not all of it is correct, but considering how much earlier it came out than the book referenced above, it is pretty amazing (really good stuff from Joe Jennings.)

The authorized pocket book referenced in the link above has some real howlers in it, as they don't seem to be able to tell magicam from Brick Price in some instances. They also screw up the picture captions, IDing the final TMP vger design as an early rejected IN THY IMAGE one.

I'm definitely looking forward to that fanfilm. :techman:

Not to derail this thread away from the old original Phase II series, but you can find a bit more about our still-in-production fan-base Phase II episode of "Kitumba" here:

Now back to the original Phase II thread.

Woohoo - I've recently bagged some more phase II citadel figures - I have all the main crew except Ilia in uniform now, plus an andorian crewman. I might even dig out my old paints and have a go. Still a few more to collect - I need me a rhaandarite and saurian crewman. Some more of the aliens would be cool too.

Phase II figures? Don't you mean TMP figures?

I think they were indeed billed as TMP figures but I'm not sure that all of the aliens they produced appeared in TMP - possibly some in the background of the Starfleet scene. As such it is legitimate to think of them as Phase II figures :)
