Star Trek peeves

The human-centrism bothers me too. In a TV that is about different cultures coming together and coexisting as equals under a shared value system, it doesn't jive when everything is observed to revolve around one race. I can accept that most of the crew is human because that's a budgetary thing. But let's have other races have done important things too.

A French captain with a British accent.
Actually, considering the proximity between France and Britain, it isn't outside the realm of possibility that a French person learning English would do so with a British accent, since that is how they're used to hearing it.

If you've ever seen the relationship between the French and the British up close and personal I think you'd realize there is NO chance of that happening.

Huh? Because we slaughter the French on arrival as a matter of principle? Maybe if UKip get elected.

Besides, in the 24th century, I imagine all accents are pretty muddled.

Good point about accents in the future... I hope everyone melds into an Australian accent... at least the gals :-)

I agree. It wouldn't take away Picard still being of French ancestry, just that Earth's a little more of a melting pot in his day.

If Earth is indeed a melting pot, by the 24th century why would anyone have either a French or a British accent?

Other than the show is produced in America, why do Humans in the future even speak English at all? Only about 400 million people today speak it as their first language, out of about 7.4 billion.

LOL ... that's where the $$$$ is.

Add the people who speak English as a second language though and it's closer to a billion.

Plus we don't know what happened after world war III. One would presume English speaking countries prevailed.

Which is what we see, the eastern half of the world (Eastern Coalition) lost, did not cooperate for the longest time after First Contact, formed the totally broken, amoral society Q showed Picard in Encounter at Farpoint and held out the longest on forming the united global community.

Western society kicked their ass and took over the globe apparently, English is called "Federation Standard" when refering to language, enough said.

When someone is dismissed by the Captain in his/her readyroom, there is an abnormally high chance there's actually one last thing the captain wants to say to that person before he/she leaves the room. And these captains always seem to wait until the last moment, right before their victims go through the door.

When something happens and they need bridge personnel to either go to a meeting/away team/deal with something- replacement personnel are immediately on the scene to fill in the now empty spot.

Where do they come from? You pan the camera around the bridge, no extra people standing around, just the ones needed to run the ship. Data gets out of his chair and some guy plops down into it before Data takes three steps away.
They have a contingent of seat-fillers on standby, just like the Academy Awards.

Simple: because those accents are still around in the 24th-Century.
My biggest pet peeve. . . now that the powers that be are creating a new trek series, it will only be aired on a subscription channel. Grrr. . .
Perhaps initially, but given how often reruns of various shows wind up on various cable channels and even broadcast TV channels, the odds are good that reruns of this new series will end up on those outlets in fairly short order

Which is entirely plausible when you consider that today, in this age of global mass communication, there are still dozens of distinct regional accents in Britain alone.

I believe that's known as the "Columbo" technique. You older members will know what I'm talking about.

Not necessarily a peeve, but an opportunity. Every Star Trek series has the same command and crew for the entire run (and films). After watching Dr. Who and how much change there is on that show, I pondered how cool it would be to have that kind of rotation in a Star Trek ensemble cast. It could keep the show fresher and more interesting, and maybe even appeal to more actors if there is a shorter commitment. A Star Trek series in which people get promoted, killed, and transferred off the show, with new actors and new blood every few seasons could be an interesting change of pace. I think about the uncertainty during the first airing of Best of Both Worlds regarding Patrick Stewart and how interesting it would be if the core characters safety was never quite as certain.
