Star Trek Parenting

I came home and found my 10 year old twins and a friend all playing Star Fleet Battles. (I had dredged out my old box from the '80s and taught my son the game months ago.)

a. Does this merit a parenting award, or a visit from child protective services?

b. Any other parents out there want to share Trek experiences/stories they had with their kids?

a. Parenting Award; teaching a 10 year old how to play SFB is a huge accomplishment. I have adult friends I can't teach to play. ;)

b. I have 2 girls aged 10 and 12 and the best I can get them to play is my Star Trek Uno and ST Scrabble. They have taken an interest in my TOS remastered dvds now that they have seen the new movie. :techman:

PARENT OF THE YEAR AWARD in my opinion. Good job in convert...I mean RAISING the next generation of trekkies!

Me and my fiancee are expecting a boy in roughly three weeks. We are both Trek nuts, I being the biggest of us both, I have already ordered Trek themed baby clothes (in moderation like onsies with the delta applied ect, no uniforms I promise) I have made it a point the last few months of her pregnancy to make my video collection complete, and I can say I have all the dvds for the series TOS TNG DS9 VOY ENT, and all of the movies shelved. I hope it is something I can share with my son in the future.

My son is always asking if he can play with my Star Trek Micromachine collection! He came to the new flick with me, and really liked it.

I teach elementary school. My class signal for "be quiet and give me your attention," is the Vulcan salute.

I wish I would have had teachers as cool as you! :techman:

^^^ my child (20 years) suffered going to see the new movie with his mother in full Trek regalia - TOS dress and vulcan ears. He only sighed a dozen times and didn't try to run away!

Did you say ST Uno and Scrabble?!

I'm not a parent, but I've introduced my 7-year-old nephew to Star Trek, starting with the animated series, then episodes of TOS, TNG, etc. He now knows phrases like "space-time continuum".

My mother was very much into TOS when it ran, and she kind of passed that on to me when I was a little kid. It was her, after all, who took me to see Star Trek VI in theaters and more or less start my interest in the whole thing.

I'd say she deserves an award of some kind, and that's not just for putting up with me for all these years.

Yes, they are both out now. My wife picked up the Scrabble for me at Toys R Us and I ordered the Uno from Amazon.com. I haven't seen the Uno anywhere in town.

My daughter at about the age two loved stuffed dogs. Her favorite, for a while, was a stuffed Porthos I got in Las Vegas. Alas, she has now moved on to a different favorite stuffed dog.

After reading on this site about people doing this, I prompted my son to say, "Boop," at the movie when they showed Pike in his wheelchair. And he was in Spock ears the first time we saw it.

I started using that with one of my 10th grade classes.

Update: my 10-year old is working on a set of blueprints for Gorn starship. Gorn are his favorites. (And what's not to like - they are noble and come from a great episode featuring mercy.)
