"Star Trek" over $100 million today

As of last night (5/13/09) "Star Trek" was at $99 million dollars. Today (5/14/09) the film goes over the $100 million dollar mark.

If you had told me three years ago that a new "Star Trek" movie would do $100 million in less than a week I would have said you were nuts.


Kirk and Spock have saved the series they created. I guess you could say J.J. Abrams and the guys helped out a little bit too.

Movie budget was that. I believe the formula is that you have to double it or something to cover promotion. So it's 200 million before break even.

But with accountants they can make it look like it was never in profit.

The production budget was $150m. The advertising budget was likely -like most movies- half that again.

Your expectations are a little unrealistic. There are only one or two films this year capable of achieving $100 million after one weekend and one business day; if such a gross were truly necessary, then the blockbuster business simply would not be viable.

Whatever the ad budget was for this movie it had to be above average... I don't think another $150 million is an unrealistic figure. There was a bombardment of TV advertising for months on both cable and network tv, the Superbowl ad ($3 million?), the various tie -ins like the Verizon thing, Burger King, etc... and that's just in the United States.

I love that Star Trek has pretty much stolen Wolverine's thunder. Looks like everyone has already forgotten about the furball after the first weekend. That's what Wolverine gets for being meh.
