TFA is in a different era from the OT, full stop and regardless of whatever literary criticisms apply to it. Story-wise, the events in TFA occur years after OT. We see OT characters having aged and done things in the interim. All of that nullifies the claim that Disney "seems incapable of escaping" the OT era, and however much that TFA is a copy+paste job of the OT is quite beside that point.
And it really isn't a copy+paste job any more than ST ID was of TWOK.

Excluding Discovery, we're looking at two current movie franchises.

Trek started off O.K. in 2009 and has declined steadily. I see little chance of it improving if they make another one.

Wars flailed with Ep VII then unexpectedly knocked it out of the park with Rogue One.

Star Wars is looking more promising, but a lot is depending on Ep VIII - was Rogue One an aberration ?

Rebels is canon, and there are canon SW books. So, I gotta say, "No." SW is primarily a movie franchise, but not exclusively.
True, and Star Wars' standing benefits from their exclusion, whereas Trek rather obviously strengthened by the quality of the post T.V. era novels and (disputedly) Discovery.

Considering they're my two favourite franchises, I'm far from fond of eithers current output, excepting Rogue One and Discovery, both of which I like.

Let's see if Ep VIII is significantly better than Ep VII...

I gotta disagree there. I'm not really knowledgeable about the books and comics. But I think that The Clone Wars was good, and certain episodes were outstanding. Rebels is not of substantially worse quality, and certain episodes of it are also outstanding. Star Wars actually benefits from their inclusion.

I'm hopeful.

"The Orville".

Haha, I voted third party. And this time the vote counts.

One show does not a franchise make.

According to TVTropes, a franchise is...
A collection of distinct series which are often considered as a collective unit under a blanket title. They often, but not always, share a common continuity; even when they do not, they are more closely bound than Spinoffs. While characters may come and go, formats may change from live action to animated and back again, and even production houses/creators may change over time, the thing that remains constant for a franchise is the universe in which it takes place.

Clone Wars is fantastic and a great addition to the Star Wars saga. Took me a while to warm up to it but I'm glad I did. Rex is my new favorite character right next to Ahsoka. They are interesting, have great lore to improve the saga and I think it fit well.

The way it ended was extraordinary, too.

I've seen a fair amount of the episodes on T.V. and purchased the Bluray box set (hey, it's Star Wars). I've had it a couple of years and not opened it yet.

Having watched Rebels for a couple of years I've just deleted the last season or so from my TiVo unwatched.

I really can't see how either of them does anything to add to the overall standing of the franchise. Quite the opposite in fact.

I would not equate Rebels and Clone Wars. Clone Wars works very hard to add character to the clones, to Anakin and Obi-Wan that was truly missing in the films.

Not sure how having more stories about a huge conflict in Star Wars can't add to the franchise, but ok.

O.K., I see it as adding to the franchise, but not adding much of value.

There's obviously an audience out there that enjoy the animated shows, and that's great for them. I don't hate them and will pick them up on Bluray eventually (it's Star Wars !) but they're kind of...flat - not really doing it for me.

I should probably point out that I purchased Voyager too. I'm like that.

That's fair, but I see it adding a lot of characters and lore, not just adding it. But, I really like Rex and the concept of a Clone Army and seeing the consequences born out.

I'm weird like that.

Good for you !

There's been a few episodes of Rebels I've enjoyed and the same for Clone Wars. I just wish I could get excited about them.

I was an avid follower of the novels for years - I purchased Splinter of the Minds Eye when first published and loved the relaunch with the Zahn books but again found myself feeling rather disinterested by the time we got to the Vong invasion.

My likes and dislikes are hardly of interest to Lucasfilm/Disney, especially as I continue to purchase the discs. I will, however, probably continue to judge the franchise by the main body of work - the movies.

Fingers are firmly crossed (but coupled with a sense of impending disappointment) for Episode VIII...

Episode 8 is definitely feeling like a make or break moment for me in the franchise. I loved TFA, and I could appreciate RO, but it was not something I wanted to see again. I'm worried 8 might be the same way.

See - we're all different. I disliked Episode VII and unexpectedly loved Rogue One, but we've both arrived at the same place - Episode VIII : make or break !

Star Wars seem to have a significantly greater appeal to a wider audience than Star Trek. I enjoy watching both franchises.

I think Star Wars does a better job of making their shows fun to watch. And SW can do cute as well, like with the LEGO Freemaker series. I am not aware that Star Trek has even tried something like that, to appeal to kids and adults who can appreciate that type of show. But even if ST tried, I don't know how successful it would be.

Star Wars has a significant larger fan base, more of presence in popular culture, just plain has made more money.

That said, I like Star Trek prior to 2009 better than Star Wars as a whole.

I would dispute this, that vast majority of Trek fans (as I understand it) steer clear of the novels, and it's hard to see how you feel they strengthen Trek.

Outside of the people who read them, their impact on the franchise is near zero.
