That was my complaint. I only bought a 6 month subscription to play it, and wasn't obsessive about playing it (a mission or two a couple nights a week, maybe a couple hours on a weekend day, and took plenty of time off, even missed most of the last month of my sub because of my wedding/honeymoon) Despite all that, character is maxed out, have the biggest ships, and can't upgrade my character anymore (not even the skill points).
Seems funny that the character is maxed out when only about 1/2 (or slightly more) of the possible skill points are assigned, but hey, guess you really have to pick strengths and weaknesses.
Not excited to sign up for a lifetime sub, with the implication that I'll be playing for several more years, if I'm basically already 'finished' with my character. That shouldn't happen in a MMO game, definitely not this quickly.
This puts you in the situation where you are just grinding out random crap missions (collect samples, blow up 5 enemy ships) for no reason or benefit. The weekly missions are great, but honestly, I don't want to be paying a constant subscription for an hour mission once a week, with several week breaks between sets. That's 5-6 hours of mission a month, and the monthly rate really doesn't make that worth it.
The endgame for this one just sucks, and comes way too early. I ENJOYED the game, for the most part, and even want to keep playing, I just don't want to drop a couple hundred dollars to keep playing a game I've essentially already beaten once.
I'm mostly a single player game kinda guy anyway, so it also annoys me that I've paid $40 for the game, $75 for my 6 month sub, and right now, I would still have to pay them money if I wanted to play this game again. I like the model where buying the game means you can actually play the damned thing if you want. And you don't waste money if you can't play for a couple weeks, or just take time off. It's now at the point where you can get the game for basically nothing, but pissed that we initially had to buy a game that we ALSO had to pay to play.
The money issue was another annoyance of mine. I bought a 6 month sub for $75, to see if I'd like it, and I did for the most part. Seems like if you want to buy a lifetime sub at that point, it should really let you count some or all of the initial purchase as part of the lifetime fee. By not committing before i got a chance to really try it, i essentially lost that $75. It's not bad when you think about it on a per-month basis, but when you add it up, they're asking me for $40 to buy it, $75 for my 6 month sub, and now $300 for the lifetime (the sale knocks that down, but still). That's $415 for this game, which seems like a lot. Especially when the leveling aspect makes it such a short one before you have to just grind out missions for no benefit, or start over every 6 months...
Also thinking that if I am going to buy a lifetime sub anyway, maybe I'm better off doing the Star Wars KOTOR game, so at least I haven't already beaten it or thrown money at it.
See, and therein lies your big mistake. You treat it like single player game.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with hopping on your ship every now and then and blow up some Romulans or Borg ships.
But as soon as you make a social experience out of it you will have a blast.
Find some friends who play the game and enjoy it together. Either in real life or actually in the game.
Go look to join a fleet with a gaming philosophy that roughly matches yours.
I hated the STFs before I got into a lively fleet.
The experience to take a bunch of essentielly gaming nerds and turn them into a coordinated succeeding gang of badasses on The Cure (a mission hated by any PUG player) is very rewarding.
The fleet's not perfect and way to PvP oriented. But at least I got a dozen or so other players I can regularly turn to to do some missions or STFs or just plain hang around somewhere...
Oh, and the fact that this game turns more and more into a real good Star Trek themed game helps, too.
