So, I want to try out the ST:O free trial weekend...

but it is only for people who've actually already purchased the game previously?

There are three things that went up today:

The Welcome Back Weekend, which is reactivation for inactive accounts.

The Refer a Friend program, which lets subscribers give a friend a trial, and gives the subscriber and the friend special perks for playing together, and gives the subscriber rewards if the friend ends up subscribing. The Holy Grail of which is if you get five subs lined up, you get the alternate-future Galaxy Class from "All Good Things".

The third thing is what you want, the new Demo Client. That lets you play the game all you want, but after level 3 you don't gain SP anymore, and there's only one mission you can do after the tutorial. You also have a lot of restrictions on your ability to chat and trade items, to prevent it from becoming a way for spammers and gold sellers to bypass the protections against them.

Here's the link you want for the demo:

what can you do as an Admiral in STO besides the additions like infected?do you get to command multiple shipsat a time?

Currently, what you can do as an admiral are the following:

A small amount of missions that take you from Rear Admiral 1 to Rear Admiral 5.

Daily Exploration and PvP missions, to gear up for the Special Task Forces (STF).

Three STFs, with a fourth nearly ready. New ones will come about every 3 weeks. These are five-man "raids", which take hours to complete and cannot be done with a smaller group.

There is more stuff coming; in a month or two there will be more non-STF content, and in the July update (Season 2 is what they're calling it) they will be raising the level cap to Rear Admiral 10 and adding a lot more content.

And of course, there's always PvP and Exploration outside the daily missions, if you enjoy them.

One thing that was also announced for the Season 2 updatte was an entire new Endgame Sector Block with Episode missions (that are not like STFs) that will be challenging for Top Level RAs.

Basicallt the guys who made the Intrepid for STO paide attention to Voyager.

Except the aft torpedo launchers are impulse exhausts. :p I'm guessing that that is because they had to homogenise it for being modular. Neither the Cochrane or Discovery classes have room on their nacelle struts for the Intrepid's impulse engines.

Anyone having trouble logging in? I keep getting a network connection time out. It isn't even going to the usual connection screen.

I can't get back into this game until they polish the game off. I wen't back for the welcome back weekend, but still the little things they haven't fixed annoy me.

Some things to keep in mind about the ship models; since they do ship customization where you can combine the parts for the ships of a given type in a given tier, they sometimes have to make slight changes in one so that the parts fit the others. This is more true of some ships than others, but keep in mind CBS has to approve ALL their ship designs (even non-canon ones they make up), and they aren't shy about requiring changes. Recently CBS rejected a much-demanded ship design the day before it was supposed to launch, requiring a third pass of the design and approval process.

CBS also evidently considers projects in the works in making these decisions, and it's the same contact who handles approvals for the books and toys.

Well, I guess I'll try the demo. Hopefully it runs.

I have to wait till after midnight (Central) since I have a weekly bandwidth limit with downloads from midnight to six am only counting as 1/10th of the actual download.

Edit: Well, that was a bust. The downloader wants to go at 8kbps on my amazing internet connection.

I've decided that I'm going to let my sub run out in June. I've reached Admiral L5 and am bored to tears, even after PVE and PVP, there's just nothing for me to do that interests me. I'll come back in a couple of months and see what they've done, hopefully there will be a glut of new content.

The end of June/early July is when the Season 2 update hits which is supposed to add:

- Klingon PvE episode content (Like the Feds have now, but it's not just Frd missions with the text 'Klingon' over it - they finally get their own storyline)

- A new 'High Level Sector Block Hub' with more Episodic missions that aren't tied to the Borg STF zone.

- The 'Federation Diplomtic Corps' (aka Diplomacy and 'First Contact' Star Cluster Exploration missions; and it ties into the revamped commodities/aid the planet missions too). They are supposedly making this a completely valid and alternate way to Level a character up if you're no into all the 'pew, pew' of blowing up Klingon/Romulan/Cardassian, etc. ships ;)

- More 'Ship Interior' sections for your ship (Sickbay and Engineering); and they want to add a mini-game that allows you to heal your BO's and your injuries and ships damage - assuming you're playing on 'Advanced' or 'Elite' difficulty.

And other stuff still, but those were (for me) the 'highlights'. Whereas the Season 1 Update was mostly bug fixes, and some new stuff, they've stated the Season 2 Update is more/mostley new mission content oriented, which is a good thing. If they do manage to get everything they're talking about in for Season 2; I think the game will be at the point it should have been at launch - with more and varied content, and two full and opposing factions with both PvE and PvP options.

If they can keep the pace they're going at with the content additions, I think the game will have a good ampunt of ccontent, variety, and play options by the 1 year mark.

I do like the direction they're taking the game, and I also like that player feedback is being listened to and guiding a lot of their decisions of STO expansion and development.

(But, I got a Lifetime Subscription, so I can afford to be patient ;)).

^ Ah, that is excellent news. They are indeed moving very quickly. People complain, but I doubt they understand the massive undertaking this is for a small development team. I think they are doing well, and I look forward to new content.

I find that alternating months on MMORPG's or sometimes alternating several months is useful. It makes all the new content feel even more fresh and helps alleviate boredom.
In WoW I turn it on after major expansions and around the holidays. So I play maybe 4 or 5 months a year. That schedule has kept WoW interesting to me for what 6 or 7 years now. The same goes for everquest and COH. I imagine CO and STO will be similar.

Lifetimer biding my time here too. I feel much the same way that you do about STO. There is a hell of a lot of potential in the intellectual property that I haven't really felt has been met by the game so far, but I like the direction they are moving in. Maybe once they have a more well developed spectrum of content and gameplay improvements around the 1 year mark, they can somehow "relaunch" the game to draw players back in.
