Star Trek: Online

I got an open beta key so I look forward to working with you Valerian next month in ironing things out, hopefully.

The more the merrier. The more problems we find in beta and get dev attention directed towards the better release day will be. So far Cryptic has been very good responding to bugs and design issues and has been active in fixing them both. That by itself is what gives me optimism about the games future.

I also got a beta-key. My work had them for the first 1000 people to sign up... Now i just need a computer that can play it. :):):):):):)

No, but I've seen enough videos and loved the first two games - this is more of the same, but with online play and lots more to do rather than KILL SIX KLINGON SHIPS GET REWARD WoW BS.
Well, if you think, STO consists of only that, then you clearly have not seen enough.
There's more quest diversity than that. Even some no violence diplomacy stuff, where you actually have to pay attention to what the involved NPCs tell you.

It was fun for a week but overall pretty awful

Missions for the most part are boring and generic (with a couple exceptions)

Doesn't really feel like star trek, and the voiceovers are terrible

I hit level 20 (there are 40 levels total) with a little over 1 day /played

There's no content, the Klingon side is just a clone of the federation side but they can only do PvP

It's basically rushed by a full year or two, I haven't heard of any other MMO with a 2 year development cycle

Anyone joined the Name a Starship Class contest?
I named them Trident class, Stingray class and Nautilus class.

Well the ship combat has a strong "Starfleet Command" vibe, which I loved. So there's no complaining from me about that. As long as the character and ship customization is as robust as advertised I'll be a happy camper. And if Cryptic is being genuine about how their Genesis engine works and we'll actually be able to keep flying in one direction and keep finding brand new star systems, that will truly be fun. That that's just the ship side of the game.

I hear there's an away team aspect, too? :-)

That makes two of us that suggested Trident. That DSSV looked awesome. Kind of like a dreadnought. But I would have swapped the designs of the DSSV and the cruiser. The cruiser looked more like a Nova/Intrepid class vessel.

Folks, this is a GAME. And a MMO at that. It's supposed to be successful.
You don't get successful with copying every canon tidbit in Trek to a tee. I would find that to be a snore-fest and others, ie. the buying customers would, too.

What do you think why we haven't had a decent Trek game in god-knows-how-long?
(Yes, even Bridge Commander - what made it great were the mods, nothing else.)
Because no-one will buy such a game, therefore not warranting a big development budget and therefore being either half-finished (like Legacy or New worlds) or seriosly behind in technological development (like Away team. C'mon the Commandos craze was in the early 90s).
Take Trek mainstream I say, it worked with XI, it will hopefully work with Online.

I dont think the game is ready for prime time myself, however Cryptic has been making incredible strides forward with their patches but really right now the entire progression system is in shambles, its utterly broken and theres content gaps right in the beginning of the game. This is fact, though it can be fun at times, ultimately I personally feel its missing that Trek feeling on the whole, and think we need iconic things like Tricorders and fully functional bridges ala Bridge Commander to make the game feel like Star Trek.

As to the fanboys, I think some people are just so desperate for a new ongoing Trek game, they'll delude themselves into thinking Cryptic will make the greatest Trek game known to mankind. Im skeptical but I'll give Cryptic a chance.

I have had enough of this nonsense - cut out the trolling/flaming - you're warned again!!!

I'm still trying to iron out what race I'm going to make my captain. I'll have the option of creating a joined Trill but I'm also fascinated with being able to create something totally new.

I went with:

Cosmic (yeah I know not original) for the Cruiser
Kumari for the Escort
Surak for the Science ship.
I went with:

USS Tereshkova (the first woman in space) for the Cruiser
USS Gallant for the Escort
USS Ansari for the Science vessel (although I'd be just as happy if your USS Surak took that one :vulcan:)

Maybe this was answered someplace...but does anyone know what kind of fees there will be?

Most MMOs charge $15.00 a month (a buck to a few bucks less per month if you buy in 3, 6 or 12 month blocks).

Cryptic's other MMO running on the same engine is $14.99 a month. I'd expect STO to be the same.

Louts Fleet: A Star Trek Online Guild ~ An Observation

Being a Star Trek fan for as long as I can remember, I was extremely excited several years ago about hearing about Star Trek Online. I have been looking forward to this coming February, when the game goes live, for a long time. Also, I have been playing MMOs for nearly 6 years. Everything you can thing of…from Everquest I & II, Matrix Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Sword of the New World, CoH, CoV, Champions, and many more. In each one of these I have had a strong guild that supported its members. Guilds that would watch over new recruits and all the while allowing members to grow and explore on their own. This was the especially the case in SWG, MXO, and LOTRO.

When Star Trek Online was becoming a reality, I set about looking for a guild that would be as supportive and cool as the ones I had known in other MMOs. And, I found one, Lotus Fleet! It was just what the preverbal “Doctor” ordered! My Fleet experience started with a crash course in Lotus Fleet Starfleet Academy! Lotus Fleet Academy is the training and education division of Lotus Fleet. The Academy is free and open to anyone and everyone who wishes to learn about Star Trek with no commitment to join. What a great way, I thought, to immerse yourself in Star Trek knowledge and lore. After The Academy I joined the Fleet as a full member and have enjoyed it everyday since then. We are serious with our guild jobs and serious about having fun when we play! Our RP Department has a strong presence in our fleet. Although RPing is not required at any level, the choice is yours. Being former military myself, I have notice a strong work ethic in the Fleet that seems to come from some of our former military members; I certainly welcome and appreciate this attitude. It is a very well organized guild and allows members to contribute as much or as little as they want. I have seen nothing but great attitudes, laughs, Star Trek fandom, and gaming expertise, with no drama!

If you find that after checking out our website ( http://www.lotusfleet.com/ ) that you are interested our Fleet. Please give a PM and I will be more than happy to assist you in anyway I can.

We are a great group of guys and gals (a lot of us are seasoned gamers) that have tons of experience with MMOs and a love of Star Trek.

I look forward to meeting you!

Devem

I'd be interested in designing a crew and ship but I doubt I'd have much time to actually play in order to get my money's worth. Paying $15 per month would be steep just to do that. Will you be able to print and save copies of your characters and ships on your pc - maybe I'd prefer just to do that to start.

Anom, can you resize those images to a more reasonable size?

Uh, just noticed that the Prometheus is without the multi-vector mode...the only thing that made that class interesting and they got rid of it.
