Paying for the ships in the C-Store is a convenience service. And people do pay, cause they like to be lazy. I like to be lazy as well
I did not buy a single retrofit though, cause it couldn't be easier to get them, just reach level cap.
If there were no C-Store you'd still had to grind to get the cool stuff.
it is a game that rewards "work" with cool stuff.
There is in no way any reason for you to be given anything just because.
As long as you have the option to get it ingame, don't complain.
And nothing you buy on the C-Store is game breaking or balance altering in a way that you HAVE to buy it.
Simple as that.
And why would I want to have teh same ship on all characters? That would defeat the purpose of having different characters for me.
At the most I fly the same ship on two toons.
I think there are several "Must Haves" that you need to work for.
The MVAM is THE Escort at the moment. The separated Beta section runs rings about BoPs and powers often backfire against a separated MVAM.
The Borg set is the BEST hands down. If you use everything but the shields (use Covariant [cap]x3 mk X) you get hull and shield regen.
H'peng torpedoes are the current best torps in game. you can mount as many as you want! Very fast cooldown and that 2nd explosion is the Bomb!
I look forward to C-Store stuff as it's kinda like content, I just wish they would cater more to end game players instead of lower tier skins and academy outfits.

But nothing you just listed is C-Store exklusive. Only the Prometheus is even in the Store for convenience.
The Pengs are considered dirty fighting in PvP, so if you use them nobody will take you seriously anyway, except the PuGs who use it themselves. You can get that with one hour playtime.
The complete Borg set get be won within a single day.

And I doubt the MVAM is the only way escort to go atm. I see too many succesfull Defiants, fleet escorts and regular Prometheus' for that.

I am a long ago veteran of the pre nerf STFs so this was with the full Borg kit as described above that let me survive his initial uber attack.

The beauty of STO is, you can equip whatever fits your playstyle.
Some people swear on the Borg Set. As an engineer in a Galaxy class cruiser I tend to agree and everybody would do well with it probably.
But others will get more out of the Aegis set probably.
Or a combination of different Sets.
Even the Breen set, which is regarded as the redheaded stepchild sometimes could be very powerful in the right hands, mostly science builds I guess.
And then non-set gear could be used very effectively if you tailor make it to your needs.

My sci officer, at Captain level, mounted the Breen set, and I felt like it would stay there until I could replace it with the Aegis.
Pity I don't play anymore.
