So, I have a Mac....is there any way for me to play Star Trek Online other than buying a PC?
Well, I never played it on PC, so I can't directly compare the two. That said, I LOVE it. They rebuilt the controls so that they make sense on console controllers and I think it works really well. Graphics are updated too -- ground missions look decent but in space there are times I just stop and admire the view because it can be truly stunning. I think it's great. If you're looking for a way to get back into it and can't play on a PC, I highly recommend giving it a shot on Xbox. How is it on Xbox? I quit playing when they tanked mac support. It used to make a heater out of my mac also. My poor home system really struggled with it. Been thinking about trying it out on my Xbox...
I imagine if you're used to STO on computer, switching to the console format is really jarring. Since I started on console, I'm used to the controls and I know no other play style.Fellow Mac user here. I've tried running Windows on different MacBooks over the years, and there are issues with games. I've run out of memory on my old MacBook. I tried again on my new MacBook and couldn't get games to run smoothly. I've never tried STO, but I imagine it'd be a similar issue.
I'm not happy with STO on my PS4. There's too many options to choose, especially in space combat, and not enough buttons on the controller. I've spent months struggling with it, and I gave up on it. The other issue is that most of the Fleets that I'd want to join are PC only, which is a problem. Its really not the kind of game you can learn to play without help. Its really complicated and the in-game tutorials are lacking.
I'd really love a good Star Trek game, but IMHO STO isn't it. I just started playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, and STO seems really dated by comparison in terms of graphics & game play.

As for comparing it to a game like RotTR, yeah, it's definitely not as polished as that. RotTR is a very different game. STO has been around for years and just receives updates, and there's no getting around that. The fact that it's an MMORPG is largely why it looks and feels the way it does too.
Anyway, you have totally valid criticisms. Just my two cents!
Were they out of their Vulcan minds?!? Were they really making the logical choice by cutting off Mac users? Possibly. But the right one? I don't think so. "The Needs of the Many outweigh the Needs of the Few, or the One."It'd probably be easier to just buy a copy of Windows to use on your Mac, rather than a whole second computer.
Other than that, no. It looks like even homemade ports using WINE no longer work.
