The best thing they could do is stop with subscription. It's almost pointless. Use the extra $15 in the C-store, but don't use it on subbing.

Unless they change things so that there is a DIFFERENCE between gold and silver, people are going to come to that conclusion on their own. No valid reason to pay anymore, so people aren't. They used to get by mostly on subs, so they had a nice, solid revenue stream. Now they are shocked that it's drying up, when they are giving away it all, and people don't wanna pay for, uh, nothing?

People have been pointing this out since the first gold/silver matrix was shown to us, but they didn't listen...

Both of you have good points.

I just don't understand what's so complicated. If I were a company offering a MMO game, I'd see what the successful ones are doing (business wise) and copy that.

Why is World of Warcraft more popular than Lord of the Rings or DnD Online? I've never played but it looks expensive. What are they doing right? How do they get people to lay down the cash?

Nice picture Amasov. Did you have to wear the Enviro suit for the mini-game?

I didn't mean to be harsh on the poster that wanted to start a fav character list. I just thought that it was unrelated to trek gaming. And now I see someone tried to start a Star Wars discussion?!?

They made a more polished clone of Everquest using the setting from most popular RTS franchise in existence just as Everquest population was starting to crash and that RTS was peaking. It's not a particularly replicable formula.

Also it's starting to crash.

Just worrying, I suppose, that a couple months ago, we were getting pumped up by how well financially that Cryptic was saying STO was doing, and that F2P was going to bring it even higher. We're what? 2 months into F2P, and financial doom and gloom has ALREADY set in?

Oh I was there when it happened and I know a few insiders. I can most assuredly say that SOE nuked their own golden goose and lucky Blizzard reaped the fallout.

Yep, it really gives you a lot of confidence in Danny Boy. I read the Perfect World financial report that was released recently and they seem to be doing well. Why is that not translating as good for Cryptic?

What ever happened to the concept that residual income was the most desirable way to make money??? Perhaps I'll wait until Cryptic files for bankruptcy than I'll buy it. Run it as on of my Star Trek hobbies ;-)

Why are we interpreting "things didn't grow as much as we'd hoped, so we're making some changes" as "we have no income and are collapsing?" Last time the forums were accusing Cryptic of having no income, it turned out they were the by far and away Atari's largest income center.

Atari divested itself of its golden goose? That's hardly a good business strategy...

Yeah. Their reasoning was basically that although it makes tremendous income, it has tremendous costs and lead times; whereas casual browser games have short lead times and low costs, so they can crank out more of them and then forget about them or put one guy on bugfixes.

Frankly I think they're insane, but then, they're French.

I need some input from you guys. My current plan was to get the Odyssey pack, primarily for my engineer who's currently using a Sovereign as a tanking ship. My science character could potentially use a science Odyssey but I'm very happy with the current ship (RSV) andI have my doubts I'll ever use a science Odyssey as my main science ship.

This started me thinking perhaps I can save my c-store points and just find a ship for my engineer, perhaps the Excelsior? Which ship's better as a defensive tank with average dps? What do you guys think?

If you're looking at a cruiser, then the Excelsior is where it's at on DPS. She moves faster, is more flexible (even though the Odyssey has universal Boff slots), has transwarp capability to every sector of the game map, has a strong defensive capability, and is just a terrific ship.

I have the C-store Odyssey (Tactical) and I am severely disappointed in it's abilities as compared to the Excelsior. It seems like it has more advantages, but that's before you account for it's size and capabilities. Even with the +1 stats, it handles about the same as the free Odyssey, and what's worse is that even with the Mk XII green RCS console, the ship can barely get out of it's own way.

While fighting other ships in PvE, the Odyssey doesn't perform very well. It's designed as a tank, but I have much more success tanking with my Excelsior, where I can maneuver enough to regen my shield facings, and use all of my defensive Boffs.

So the Excelsior gives me:
1) Great DPS
2) Great Defense
3) Best maneuverability for a Tier 5 cruiser.

Now, this is just anecdotal, and every experience will differ, but in PvP, I've destroyed a lot of Odysseys with my Excelsior. Others have ended in a stalemate, and one ended when the guy got down to a handful of hull points and escaped. I have never been straight out killed by an Odyssey alone.

I've just got me the Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit for my Engineering character, with the intent on making it a tanking crowd control ship for PVE, any suggestions as to Boff powers and console/devices I should fit to it?

Once you accept the mission from Isihl, when you go to mine rocks, the laser appears in your hands.

Make sure you've actually started the mission, I transwarped there, got the orange suit, headed outside and couldn't do anything at any of the dilithium formations, I then checked my missions screen and it was still in available, I'd never hailed and accepted the assignment.

Failing that, not all the formations are active, use your tricorder to guide you to mineable formations.

I hailed several times but there was no option to "accept" a mission. Not in Available. However, it did finally show up. So I accepted, went there and mined the 4 areas. There is no 5th area visible. I've walked around the astroid 3 times. Went up every hill and down every valley. Doing a tricorder scan says nothing is visible...

Okay, I've had my excitement mining dilithium. Next.
