Star Trek Online canceled?

It sounds to me like they are not only trying to save STO, but they will save it. They're canceling Gods and Heroes in order to complete STO.

The only reason that STO is still alive is that CBS Paramount is pushing for it. Without their backing, Perpetual might have either axed it in favor of the closer-to-completion G&H or folded up completely.

So you see? The studio really does like Star Trek. They like us. They really really like us, and our money.

Meh. I want Star Trek back, and I'm glad CBS is backing us (now ;) ).

I hope they finish it. Personally, I don't think the Trek gaming community is big enough to profitably support an MMORPG, and frankly the Trek demographics tend to skew older these days. That could make it a tough sell among fans like myself who have families and jobs and kids and would never in a million years have enough time to play an MMORPG.

But hey, I hope I'm wrong and that it will be a smashing success.

I think Perpetual has realized that they could release an MMORPG along with what will be a hugely anticipated feature film.
I'm looking forward to the game, but like Jimbo says above, a lot of us Trek fans are perhaps beyond the MMORPG age. I've never played one. I might try LOTR online this winter, and hopefully this Trek one when it comes out.
Even so, I have reached a stage now where video games just don't hold my interest. This Trek Online would have to be the Starflight of online games to keep me into it for more than a few months at the most.

Yeah, last year amid all the WoW hype I tried a trial account. I quickly realized that it would take an enormous amount of time playing the game to advance to even the lower tiers. And in my world, that's just never going to happen. During a good week, I might be able to carve out an hour or two to play video games. And in an MMO, I'll just never be able to compete with the teenage players who can go for 10 hours at a stretch.

So like I said, I hope it's a big success, but regardless, I probably won't be playing myself.

I could churn out hours in a row for a day or so, then take a break doing other things, and then play again later on.

I did that with several MMO's before and over time they became repetitive really so I stopped playing altogether.
They aren't contagious to those who don't want to get 'infected' and who know that they have certain things to do for themselves in real life.

I will definitely want to try it out myself though.
It should be fun for a period of time.

There's definitely a market niche for an MMOG based on Trek. As Perpetual indicated in their media release, the swords and sorcery fantasy genre is not only saturated, it is dominated by World of Warcraft. They've seen Star Wars Galaxies, the highs and now ever deepening lows that particular MMOG has achieved and while STO isn't a sure thing, it's a far safer bet.

I'll be playing it for sure :)
