Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thread

For a while during the sixth season of Hidden Frontier I used to host a Grading and Discussion thread for the episodes. As time went on I'm afraid I lost the time to conduct these threads, but with the dawn of another new frontier I thought I'd give this another try.

Episode 1: Iliad:
Following an unprovoked invasion of Romulan space by a new enemy, the Alpha Quadrant Alliance has banded together to combat this new threat. A deep space mission is launched with the task of scouting the area and discovering the secrets of this new enemy. However, disaster strikes and a devastating decision has to be made that will shake the crew of the USS Odyssey to their very core.

WOW is all I can say.

I see the HF/Areakt crew has indeed pursued continual improvement diligently, the writing and makeup showed drastic improvement. The green ghosting is gone. The only thing I can think of that would bring Odyssey to the next level would be the inclusion of location shoots. Iliad was the finest of their productions to date. I hope they can maintain the bar at that hieght. Odyssey will take it's place in the top echelons of Trek productions.

One observation would be with Ro in his newfound command position. As a LCDR he wouldn't have been fully prepared to assume full command of an advanced starship, I would expect him to make some mistakes along the way. I think that would add to the believability of the Odyssey and crew's position inside enemy territory with no assistance available to them.

I think the Archein makeup is pure genius, it is some of the best Star Trek alien makeup I have seen. The combination of the coloring with the shiny appliques was awesome. Sharon, John, Jenn, and the rest looked great as Archein. The Archein makeup also had the feel of classic Roddenberry aliens, especially from the TOS episode Turnabout Intruder.

One thing I would like to humbly beg for would be continued production of the episodes in high resolution, this goes for HC when it comes out as well. It looked so good on my widescreen.

Again I would like to offer my congratulations to the cast and crew of Odyssey for such an outstanding piece of Star Trek filmmaking. I would also like to include my deepest thanks for this awesome gift.

3 cheers for HF/Areakt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I really enjoyed this one too. The continuing of Ro's and Aster's relationship was nice, also the occassional pop up guest appearences was a nice way to start off the show, like ever pilot epsiode sort of has done on Star Trek.
I really enjoyed seeing the new Odyssey and too bad they are struck in the Andromeda Galaxy but hey its nice to see another Starfleet ship explore in another region of space w/o backup what so ever, unless they make allies during their time there.

I also have to say putting Ro in command was a smart move too. I kind of figured that was going to happen when most of the command crew was going to die at some point. I just can't wait for the next episode now.

You did a good job guys. I hope this is as successful as Hidden Frontier was.

Looks good, you guys tell some really good stories on a low budget and we don't have to wait a year between episodes.
Keep up the great work.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

I watched "Iliad" last night. I liked it. I have some comments, but on the whole I would definitely say that it is a good start to what I hope will be a long-spanning series a la Hidden Frontier.

I'm going to go ahead and get the critiques (i.e. the 'negatives' out of the way first.

I'm of mixed opinion on the fate of Corey and Korg. Firstly, because I thought Korg had been killed in the finale of The Section 31 Files, but also because it seems like we sat through all those years of Corey's life on HF only to have him offed in the next installment... seems a bit wonky. However, I'm familiar with the Iliad so I'm going to go ahead and say that yes, Corey survived and one day, Ro will come back to him. Personally, I would have much rather seen Corey's reaction to the news that Odyssey was lost than what we got. Will he go back to Jorian? Will he leave Starfleet? But, given the coming of The Helena Chronicles, its probably going to be addressed at some point, so I'm not too worried about it.

There were some weak actors this time around, maybe just due to the desire to bring in some fresh faces. I can accept that and let it slide. That said, the Vulcan Captain T'Lek probably wouldn't have come across so bad if his XO hadn't been so fun to watch.

But its obvious that this is going to be the Ro Show and as such they had to get axed. That's fine, I get it, but being that he has no command experience, being that he's so young, and being that he spent the HF finale being so manipulated by Siroc and being that he is also carrying the emotional baggage of possibly never seeing his husband or loved ones ever again, it was just a little hard to buy that he could keep it so together at the end of the episode.

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a bit grating though to see another 'relative of' character from someone established on canon Trek. I mean, I don't think much would have been lost if Stadi had been given a different, original name. Beyond that though, I liked her characterization, a kind of fun mix between Tom Paris and Jadzia Dax.

Over at the HF forum discussion, there's a LOT of discussion about this being similar to Voyager. I can see why. The plot is very similar to "Caretaker", and while that episode was clearly inspired by Homer's The Iliad, there are just a few too many similarities for me to just ignore it as coincidence. Even the opening credits are nearly shot for shot, rehashing those of Voyager. Certainly the credits sequence is beautiful, I am in no way suggesting they aren't, only that they are somewhat derivative, homage or not. Further, the dynamic between Ro and T'Lorra is nearly identical to that of Janeway and Chakotay, except, I'm hoping, it won't get settled too soon.

The commission ceremony was nice, but I was *really* taken out of it by Knapp's delivery of his lines, as he tried to be eloquent and epic. The lines themselves were fine, it just screamed more "performance! Look, see?!!" than anything else.

Finally, I found it a bit contrived that Ro and Corey would, in the face of such a time-sensitive crisis, make sure to stop for a quickie before leaving for their new assignment. I know they were newlyweds and all and that they just found out it would be their last chance for another month or so, but come on! These guys are supposed to be professionals!

Pros:

As ever, John Whiting was superb. I almost didn't recognize him at first without the beard and makeup, but the Archein makeup itself is spectacular. Whoever designed it is to be commended! ---John, you did a great job and I hope we see more of you on the show.--- I especially liked the dynamic of his character and the Bitchy Princess (I'm sorry, I can't recall her name at the moment) -- it was like watching Mark Lenard's Romulan Commander having to deal with Gul Dukat. Priceless!

The Greenscreen / Lighting has vastly improved. Maybe its the use of new source material for the backgrounds. I don't know. But it was infinitely more believable than what I remember seeing on HF.

Cameos: There was no way you could do this without them, so I'm glad it wasn't just one. The HF / Odyssey universe is huge, and in a place like Deep Space 12 you run into a lot of familiar faces, so I'm glad we got one last scene with a few of them, though it would have been nice to see Shelby wish Ro well, or give him some oddball piece of command advice that he thinks he'll never use.

T'Lorra: Easily my favorite character of the group. I'm glad she's an original character too, and I look forward to seeing how she develops.

Korg: It was great seeing this guy again. I know him better via The Section 31 Files, but any chance to see Karl Puder do his thang on screen is a good time to me.

Anyway, as I said, on the whole I quite enjoyed the pilot. Well done to all involved, and if you guys ever need an extra pair of hands to help, I live in WeHo, so don't be shy!

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't wait for more.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

I must recuse myself from voting. As a member of the production, I am inherently biased. [grin]

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

^ Thalek it's good to see you again old friend. While I missed Henglaar in Odyssey, I have to admit that I like your new character as well.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

Yeah, I've been something of a hermit lately. Sorry about that.

Thank you. It ought to be interesting to see where the writers and directors decide to take him.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

"...If one is truly wise, it is sometimes advantageous to appear a fool."

Awesome delivery, Thalek.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

All my players wont play this.

Why must they choose such a difficult format?

I upgraded Quicktime and VLC but still nothing to see.

I am starting to ask myself if I really need to watch Odyssey ...

Rename your file from .aspx to .mov and then try opening it in Quicktime.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

Yeah, I had to wait for alittle bit to finally get it to open when I watched it on the browser. I'm sure you will get to see it through.

It's not a difficult format at all.

For most people, it plays properly in both Quicktime, and the standard VLC package (standard meaning, as long as you're not deliberately compiling your own binaries from VLC's sourcecode and leaving out the required codecs).

If it's still not working on *either* of those applications on your computer, then the problem must be local to your machine. It's not anything wrong with Odyssey's release.

Also, as someone else has said, make sure you are remembering to save your downloaded file as .mov and not .aspx, as per the instructions provided on the download page at hiddenfrontier.org.

Sorry you're having difficulty... I wish you good luck fixing your players though, because if you don't see Odyssey, you'll really be missing out on a great show.

Where is the episode?
Can you provide a link?
I can only find the trailer mov on the site.
It seems to be well hidden.

I think I have found the problem. None of my attempts to download this episode were completely successfull.

The download always crashes before I have the whole file and thus my players wont recognize it.

Maybe heavy traffic on the NV site causes this. I´ll keep trying.

Re: Star Trek Odyssey 1x01 Iliad Discussion and Grading Thre

I'm in the middle of season 4 of ST:NF, and enjoying it throughly. I want to finish NF before watching ST:0. I took a look at the preview though, and WOW! I can't wait... maybe I coud watch ST:0 and then go back to NF? Will this spoil NF for me?

If this is a retelling of the "The Odyssey", I"d better pull out my copy and reread it, lol. It's been some 5 years since I read it last.

I'll recomend ST:0 to all my geek friends unseen, simply on the basis of ST:NF and the trailer though.
