Hey, folks, just a heads up, but I found the novelization for Star Trek (2009) at Borders this mornin' for only $3.99, plus tax.

The trade paperback is on clearance, with the regular price of $15.

I put off buyin' a copy last spring, because of the price, but got my copy this mornin' at the Domain here in Austin.

:bolian:

Oh, and here I thought this was going to be a thread bashing the book. I'm glad it's not, since I seem to be in the minority on it. I liked it. Particularly the exteneded ending (I don't konw if you've read it yet Odo, so I'm trying to avoid spoilers).

I got the book too, I bought mine back around when after the movie came out back in May. I think I bought around after the 1st or 2nd time seeing it in theaters. I noticed a lot changes from the book to the movie. There are alot things thats in the book that wasnt in the movie or was changed, but its still good book.

Haven't read it yet, its next on my list, though.

I read the book all the way through, but that was back around when the movie was still in theaters. But once you read the book, you notice some differeances between the book and movie. They took alot stuff out of the movie that was in the book, but doesnt make the movie bad,I think the movie is still good. Its hard to say which I like better because I love both. I'm thinking of reading the book again sometime after I read the other Star Trek books I havent read yet. I'm looking forward to those novels that takes place after the movie. It will be the only thing we have until the sequel comes out.

I noticed a lot changes from the book to the movie.

Movie novelizations often are written from a very early draft of the screenplay. That way, the novelization is ready to hit shelves when the movie comes out (or shortly thereafter). Often, there are changes (sometimes significant ones) between the early drafts of a screenplay and the final shooting script—scenes get cut, scenes change, ad-libbing actors change the dialog even from the shooting script, etc.

But novelizations are good for filling in background, motivations, etc.—things that a book is good for. And sometimes, the differences are fun. :)

so are they going to publish more novels based on this re-imagined Trek? I've read the movie novelization multiple times already!! I'm about ready for another story depicting the new adventures of Kirk and Spock et al. *raps finger on desk*

There are at least four followups slated for printing next year. The first will be from ADF once again. The Trektoday archives, or Trekmovie should have the particulars.I too have the novel, and got it when the movie came out. The variance can potentially be interesting from the final cut film. Anyone who has the novelizations from say, ST II, or III, or V for ex will recall the additional material for Saavik-David, etc, and Sybok and Spock's past...

The four new Trek novels are by Alan Dean Foster, Christopher Bennett, Dave Mack, and yours truly. They should be coming out over the course of 2010.

The follow-up novels should be interesting. The only thing that kinda sucks is that they've been told that they can't mess with the characters too much, and that everything has to be put "back into the box" by the end of each individual novel.

Which, to be honest, is pretty much standard procedure for tie-in novels. I've always operated on what I call the Smokey the Bear principle: you have to leave the campground the way you found it.

Greg, I saw you on the WOK Special Features. Great fun !!!

I'm not one for novels or books in general (besides making-of type books and the TNG Tech Manual, reference stuff), but I greatly enjoyed ADF's book for the movie.

I might pick up some of the new universe books, as everything is new and fresh.

Thanks! I had a ball writing mine.

LOL well I rushed out and paid 25.00 for the thing when it first came out but I was starved for byproducts, STARVED.

I will probably reread it again though which I can't really say about any other movie novelizations.

Now these 4 NuTrek novels.. I am SO looking fwd to them!

up until now, the only Trek movie novelization I've read over and over again is the TMP one. the Great Bird did a helluva job with that one, IMO.
