Star Trek Next Generation should have been called Phase II

'Phase II' sounds like a working title though. It's what you call something when you're still thinking of the proper name.
I agree that 'Next Generation' does sound a bit tacky when attached to other shows, but I reckon putting it after 'Star Trek' makes it sound sufficiently sci-fi so I've always been fine with it.

I suppose at the end of the day, it’s just one of millions of other things that don’t matter.
I really do think Next Generation is one of those titles that works well in the right context. It's got an X in, the word 'Generation' is sciencey, so the closer it's associated with sci-fi and hardware the better it works.
Like if they called the new Buffy series Buffy: The Next Generation, that would sound kind of lame. But a comic called X-Men: neXt Generation sounds like something that probably existed 20 years ago. 'Next Generation' was a magazine covering cutting edge next gen game consoles and the title suited it fine.

it implies that its a lot closer in time period to the original, not 70-100 years later. It only seems like a good name now, because people got used to it.
The "actual" Phase II wouldn't have actually been called that had they gone ahead and produced it in the 1970s, so there's no reason to expect they'd use the name for TNG instead.

Yeah, because ‘Phase II’ resonates soooo much better with the audience than ‘Next Generation’ does.
Well, Star Trek The Next Next Next Generation doesn't sound that great, either.
well Next Generation the title back then was fine I guess, but now its just a tacky name.
its like calling a new Friday the 13the show or movie as Friday the 13th The Next Generation.
heck even the early 2000s Degrassi High sequel show was called Degrassi High the Next Generation

"Phase II" sounds a lot more immediate, like it's the second 5 year mission of the TOS Enterprise.
"Next Generation", whether it's strictly speaking accurate or not, makes it clear that a lot of time has passed between the shows.
The German dub, btw, was named "Star Trek: The Next Century", which I think is also a very good title.
Though it was a little odd since TOS wasn't called Star Trek in German, instead it was just called "Starship Enterprise".

Next Century makes it sound more epic. I don't know if it suits TNG, but the title would definitely get my attention.
