Star Trek new trailer description (Spoilers of course?)

No offense taken...:)

It's funny, I had just the opposite reaction to the announcement of TNG.

I heard about it for the first time on Entertainment Tonight and was actually excited about the news.

I never felt that the TNG crew would be replacing the TOS crew.

Please note that I was about 11 years old at the time and was pretty hypersensitive at the time. Have you seen Unbreakable? I was like Bruce Willis's son in that movie. A cryin' little bitch. ;)

What is it with that kid? I had to see him in GLADIATOR twice before I realized he wasn't a little girl.

You mean he wasn't? ;)

So does anyone know if this trailer is attached to Watchmen, i.e. is on every print of the film, like the first trailer and Cloverfield, or is it just being released with Watchmen, like the second trailer and James Bond, so we may not all see it...

Anyone have a clue, because even though I can't wait for Watchmen, I'll be disappointed if I see it and I don't get this trailer.

Why would they want to take a detour from that? It's a different universe but the same Kirk?

Because popular shows like "The Enemy Within" and "Mirror, Mirror", which hinted that there are many aspects of Kirk that have rarely been explored, and yet can say a lot about the Kirk we know.

I've just been discussing this new trailer with a friend, and we independently came to the same conclusion:

If Pine can pull off that ONE line ("Yeah...we do."), then the whole "Kirk as rebel without a cause" thing can work.

But I'm wondering f the events of these episodes will even happen in the new continuity.

Plainly speaking, if this franchise doesn't end with Gary Mitchell coming aboard like say in the last movie and the search for the Valient, I will be very upset, that's all. Is somebody willing to say it will? What I mean is they can do as many prequels as they want as long as they end by tying it into TOS. Naturally a spin off series with a different captain who could be introduced in one of the movies would be desirable because it's the same universe we all know and love, somewhat, I hope, in the end, as TOS. AT least from what we've seen already. It's not that big of a stretch and could be adjusted as needed in future movies due to the TT's alternate reality universe.

It seems like this new, longer trailer is similar to the one they're now showing at the official Star Trek movie site. I'm sure you've all seen it. It makes Pike out to be more of a mentor to the young Kirk than we've previously been led to believe. That then makes it more believable in The Menagerie when Kirk calls Pike by his first hame as if they've had some kind of relationship before. I know this is a "reboot" of some kind, and I'm not that rattled by that prospect. I am getting psyched. Just remember, naysayers, many fictional characters have been "rebooted" in the past 100 years. This should be no different. :rommie: As far as talk of a show based on this new ST, from what I've seen of Bruce Greenwood as Pike, I'd like to see him helm such a show! -- RR

I am willing to say with near certainty that it won't...
The prequels, no matter how many there are should end with WNMHGB and be tied into that again. If they try to retell it after that they are making a big mistake and I'm not interested. Who would be? That would be invalidating TOS and obliterating canon.

I've been watching since the original, and Star Trek means a lot more to me than so-called "canon." I don't waste time with silly and pointless exercises like labeling one piece of fiction as "more real" than another. I'd totally miss the point of Star Trek in that instance. Star Trek isn't about Gary Mitchell sitting at the helm on Tuesday at 12:31 PM exactly.

Michael Keaton isn't Adam West, so the first Batman film is about an alternate Batman. It's not the real one. Therefore it "invalidates" every Batman that came before. Ergo, no one can enjoy the film.

^ I agree. I'd like to think that Star Trek was about a little bit more than continuity porn. The original show always took it's liberties with it's own continuity anyway and Gene Roddenberry had stated many times during TNG's run that if there was a conflict in the continuity between Star Trek and TNG then TNG was automatically right. I figure if GR can feel free to dump on canon then it's open season for the current Great Bird... Actually I feel funny calling anybody but Gene the Great Bird so... For me Abrams will have to settle for being the Big Bird of the Galaxy. He's not quite great but he sure ain't small. :D

I certainly hope they'll continue to make movies about these characters that take place throughout their lives and careers. There's no reason to avoid that simply because an earlier version of the characters exists.

Not that this hasn't been discussed before, but there is simply too much money to be made to line up this movie franchise with TOS

I'd be interested. Those TOS episodes aren't going anywhere, I can still enjoy them at any time. I might chuckle upon encountering a flat contradiction, then I'd put it out of my mind and enjoy the show.

Internal consistency is a worthy goal, but it is and should be subservient to other creative goals.

So again...what are you losing?

As a kid, I loved Axterix comics. They were pure genius, I read every album several times.

Not so long time ago, I saw new Asterix album in a book store. Immediately I proceeded to purchase it. It turned out to be utter shit. It had the familiar characters but it was all wrong. No, I did not cry in the bathroom, but I was still saddened by by the state my childhood heroes had been reduced to.

Pretty much same thing that happened to me with Star Wars. I adored the original trilogy. When the prequels came, I was a bit wary. I mentally prepared myself to the likely reality that they would not be nearly as good as the originals that I had come to love. However, the amount of suck that followed was beyond my wildest expectations. Frankly, I felt betrayed.

Did, my old Asterix albums vanish? Can't I watch the Original Trilogy anylonger? Of course not. Yet, in some level, my relationship with them has been soured. When ever is past events are mentioned in Original Trilogy, I have to actively attempt not to think of the shitfest that was the Prequels. When ever I see Darth Vader, I have to block my memories of that annoying whiny teenager portrayed by Hayden Christensen.

My greates fear is that somethin similar happens with Trek XI. Even though in this case it would be easier to swallow, as the original creator would be not the perpetrator.

On a related note, I was filled with dread when I went to see the new Indy movie. Was it perfect? No. Was it a slightly tired rehash? Perhaps a bit. Did it feel like a proper Indiana Jones movie? In quite sufficient degree, yes.

I'm not terribly optimistic, with the new Trek film, but I wait and see.
