Star Trek: New Frontiers - Preceding Reputations

Hi there. I posted this story several months ago but failed to include any information about the series. Basically, my cousin and I are working on a series of stories under the Star Trek: New Frontiers banner, which take place aboard the USS Daedalus, a Galaxy-class starship, in the post-Dominion War era.

Anyways, here is the teaser episode again. Please be kind. :)

STAR TREK: NEW FRONTIER
Episode 1x00 - Preceeding Reputations

January 2376 - Shuttlecraft Icarus
Lieutenant Joseph Tyler checked all the systems of the Type-11 shuttlecraft as it departed from the shuttlebay of the huge Earth Spacedock and made its way to Earth Station McKinley where the USS Daedalus was docked, awaiting to begin its voyages.

In the cabin of the Icarus were a group of three young junior officers, fresh out of the Academy and eager for a life of adventure in space. As Tyler glanced back he couldn't help but remember that it wasn't so long ago that he was that young and green. Well the Dominion War had definitely knocked that out of him, when you see friends and colleagues killed in front of you by the ungodly Jem'Hadar and the turncoat Cardassians.

Tyler tried to force the images of his deceased friends from his mind and tried to drag his mind into the present. The war was over, the Alpha Quadrant was at peace once again, and the rebuilding had begun. Just then, Tyler was startled out of his train of thought by laughter from the cabin.

"C'mon you can't be serious!" Ensign Steven Rose shouted as he tried to control his laughter.

"I'm serious. My father was on the bridge of the Potemkin during the incident and saw everything happen." Said Ensign Karen Copeland.

"What so you're telling me that Captain Mackenzie came onto the bridge of the Potemkin during a Jem'Hadar attack, called Captain Mendez a blithering idiot, and forcibly removed him from command by punching him to the ground."

"Absolutely. Mendez had jeopardized an intelligence gathering mission by acting rashly and bringing five attack ships down on top of the Potemkin."

"OK. But any Starfleet officer who would remove an officer in command by punching them out would definitely receive a nice court-martial. Even so, why wouldn't the captain go by the rules and have Mendez removed that way." Ensign Jikra spoke up.

"Ah well you see, Mackenzie wasn't a Starfleet officer at that time. He had retired from the service following the USS Madrid disaster of '69. He was only aboard the Potemkin as a civilian tactical advisor, which is why he couldn't go the by-the-book way to remove Mendez from command."

"Well that certainly fits with the eccentric and, some say, schizophrenic nature of the captain's personality." Jikra noted coolly.

Rose and Copeland turned and stare at Jikra questioningly. "What d'you mean?" they both asked.

"If you two had spent less time getting 'intimate', and more time studying at the Academy, you would note that the captain has made quite a name for himself in the history books. For the right and wrong reasons."

"Such as?"

"He's received numerous commendations and awards for conspicious bravery during his many assignments, including the rescue of 3,000 colonists on Julinor IV from Breen privateers and apprehension of "Black Jack" O'Connor the famed smuggler on Klaus VII. Of course on the flip-side of that is his many reprimands dating back to his Academy days. Amongst the reprimands listed are disobeying direct orders because he thought the admiral giving them was a moron, and various reports of fighting with fellow officers."

"Yes but that was all in his youth. He's in his forties now and commands a Federation starship, surely he's mellowed and became a top-flight commanding officer." Copeland shouted to Tyler, "Right, Lieutenant Tyler?"

Tyler glanced around and pasted on his widest smile.

"Of course, Ensign". Tyler gulped, as he steered the Icarus into the huge shuttlebay of the USS Daedalus.

Coming soon: Episodes 1x01 - New Frontiers...

Interesting, I don't think I've seen a New Frontier fan fic before. It's not a bad idea. I've only recently re-discovered those books and I think it is as good a series as most others.

I haven't caught up with all the books yet so where does this fit into the chronology? Does it take place after the novels?

I like the lower decks approch here and the set up. Should be fun to see these idealizing junior officers meeting the real deal.

Ah, unfortunately we may have chosen a bad name for the series, as it isn't set in the New Frontier novel continuity (though we do plan to have the Redeemers and the Dogs of War later on. It's funny that you mention it though, because it was our original intention to set the series based on Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the Excalibur, but we decided to take a different approach instead and created Christopher Mackenzie and the USS Daedalus.

With the lower decks aspect to the series, you're absolutely correct, as we will have stories from their perspective, as well as seeing the senior officer's view. The list of players in this series is shown below:

  • Christopher Mackenzie, CO, Human
  • Selok, XO, Vulcan
  • James Maxwell, CMO, Human
  • Siram Elbry, counselor, Human (1/3 Betazoid)
  • Theleth, security chief, Andorian
  • Alison Hughes, chief engineer, Human
  • Joseph Tyler, CONN, Human
  • Jessica Brown, OPS, Human
  • Polera, science officer, Vulcan
  • Steven Rose, junior CONN, Human
  • Karen Copeland, engineer, Human
  • Jikra Lar, sciences, Trill
  • Maria Bennett, nurse, Human
  • Sam Newton, midshipman, Human

That bad huh? :vulcan:
Nope, not bad at all. Looks promising, in fact... provided Captain Mackenzie isn't a complete loose cannon to the point where it strains believability. I liked the banter between the ensigns, excited at the promise of their first post-academy assignment.

I also like the era you've selected to write about. The post-Dominion War period is fertile ground for story telling.

More, please. :)

Thanks for the kind words :). And don't worry about Mackenzie being a complete loose cannon, he's just cut from a slightly different cloth than other 24th century Starfleet captains, and is more in the mold of James T. Kirk and Mackenzie Calhoun. As you'll discover in later stories, their are reasons behind his personality and actions, including the mentioned Madrid disaster, and deep personal loss, as well as living in the shadow of his famous Starfleet grandfather, Scott Mackenzie. All will become clear. Hopefully :)

Yeah, I don't think the title works well. And it doesn't help gha you have a character called Mackenzie either.

The story is promising but I'd seriously consider a different title for it.

*...looks around for next installment....* *taps foot....* *grabs Calhoun's wrist and checks watch*

Thanks everyone for the feedback. We've decided to rename the series Star Trek: Daedalus for the time being, although that will possibly need to change later on for our planned expansion to the series.

Anyway, rest assured that the first episode, New Frontiers... will be posted over the course of the weekend, with the first act up later today.
