Star Trek meets Anime

Across the street from the mall where I work is a Doubletree hotel. And in this hotel there was an anime convention. After explaining to the entire store management team what this event was, and then explaining the basics of what anime was, I was shocked to hear someone bashing Trekkies. And then another. And another.

Is this normal?

I've never encounetered anything like this. Time after time. Maybe someone inside in a Starfleet uniform was annoying people or something? I don't know. All I know is that someone in a Pikachu costume referred to me as a loser last week, when he started ranting about "Those losers who go to that stupid Star Trak thing in Vegas". And another guy dressed in something large and purple told me, quite seriously, that Star Trek fans are the real losers, that we "wear those stupid loser costumes." He had no idea I was a Trekkie, either. He just started talking at me.

Again, I ask: Is this normal?

Because it kind of made for a lousy weekend.

Not even a little. Where's the nerd solidarity? And if I ever heard one of those filthy sicko furries bashing Trek or its fans, I think I might shred his costume and some of the hide beneath.

^Uhh, we have two furries on the board here so be nice. I've never met one yet who hated Trek though.

But nearly every hardcore anime fan I've met has hated Trek and been unpleasant to me to say the least.

it is isnt new and yes it is disturbing.
but for years different sub genres have been going after each other.

i almost think it is some type of bizaare pecking order trying to establish the "other" group as being more odd then they are.

but, at the same time it isnt universal among anime fans especially the ones a little older.

some of them actually came from trek fandom and even if not involved in it any longer are still fans of some of the shows.

I like Star Trek anime...What's that make me? In fact I would like a Star Trek anime movie or short film. I think it would be cool.

Well, I did spot Star Trek: The Manga in town last week, not quite anime but similar. It was an omnibus cartoon trade paperback with a manga style artwork but a TOS adventure.

Yup. When you're part of a subculture that the mainstream folks don't get or consider uncool, you try to knock the other subcultures. To see a humourous take on the phenomenon, check out the Geek Hierarchy.

There are three volumes of Star Trek: The Manga now available, all published by Tokyopop. They're not bad, but I wouldn't say they're particularly great examples of either Star Trek or manga. There's also the unauthorized parody Star Trekker by Atelier Lana, published in English by Antarctic Press back in 1991.

You know, you'd think that people who'd been picked on as part of a pecking order would learn that it's a deplorable behavior to do and shouldn't be done.

But I guesst we all want to be important somehow in some way.

:cardie: :vulcan:

Kinda reminds me of this event...

I'm just glad it's over now. The really disturbing part was that everyone was coming to me to explain what was happening, and yet the participants for the most part hated me - without even knowing I was a Trekkie. You'd say, "Hi, how's it going today" or some other lame thing, and they'd be all, "Anime rules and Trekkies suck!" It took me two days of convention hell to figure out why.

Some people, and I don't know why, showed up in their starfleet uniforms. That's right, someone really loves Trek Manga. This, I understand, was an irritant, or an offense, or some other thing. Personally, I don't get it. Star Trek has both Manga and Anime. But whatever.

We have Trekkies and fanboys. They have Cosplay and the Otaku clans. They have nothing to say about it.

A person in a Pikachu costume ripping on a trekkie in a starfleet uniform? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I enjoy both anime and Trek there are some similarities with some referring to the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise as "the Star Trek of anime".

^I think that's mainly because both series were not huge hits until after they were cancelled. They became immensely popular in re-runs and the rest is history.

With it's emphasis on rebellions, laser swords and espers, Gundam is more "Star Wars" territory IMO.

I would assume this would be a logical step.
I dont understand why there would be so much in fighting.
Look, dont take this the wrong way guys but for as nerdy and weird as Trekies are...SOME anime fans are lightyears ahead when it comes to that as well as general creepiness.

That said I think most of the few anime fans ive run across irl were Trek fans also

You know this would make a hillarious comic strip.

Say Pikachu suit guy in a frame, next frame him and a starfleet guy who comes in, they squint at eachother. then the guy in the pikachu suit calls the trekie a loser.
