Star Trek Magazine 38

STM was one of the last holdovers from better days I suppose. Gone are the times when anything with Trek on the cover, sat front and centre among film/sci-fi titles. WH Smiths had been increasingly dropping the number of copies on the shelf, down to a handful tucked away right at the back. Now not at all if my experience is anything to go by. I've always managed to walk into any branch and get one without having them file a copy away in a drawer. Sad that it might come to that. These aren't small stores or service station places here either. One city centre place and two busy shopping centres.

I got my subscriber copy through just before Christmas, which usually indicates that the issues will hit shops within a week - but a number of people have noticed that Smiths seems to have dropped STM from its stores. This may (and I emphasise the MAY) be related to the decision to switch the magazine to quarterly release...

I've been checking in my local Smiths for the last couple of weeks and nothing. They had an issue of Star Wars in but no idea if it's the latest issue. They stopped stocking Supernatural a couple of years ago and I'll be annoyed if they drop ST too. I guess I had better just subscribe from now on...

I only came to find this thread to make sure it had been published, with there being no copies on eBay either I was a bit worried. Thought it was going to be a case of TV Zone all over again...!

Nope, it's still out there...

Checked around Oxford, Reading... several WH Smith stores and no Trek magazine. Very sad.

And the Smiths in Bath has a Star Trek Magazine, didn't look at the magazine number, although it did have a movie era Kirk on the cover.

38 never materialised in Shrewsbury, Telford or Wolverhampton during the whole month of December then.

Or if they did, Smiths staff didn't put out. Still the case as of yesterday. Star Wars and Supernatural given shelf space.

So after I subscribe, Smiths finally has a copy on their shelf 2 days later... Oh well, at least I make a saving!

I think it took a lot longer to get over here than had been originally planend for... although as I'm no longer in the loop, it could be because werewolves ate the entire shipment for all I know :)

It's now in my local WH Smith too. Usual place among the Entertainment/Film/TV titles. Slow boat from the States, took the scenic route it seems... :p

A good 3 weeks behind Forbidden Planet, who presumably have their own deliveries from Titan. Instead of Smiths own in-house (or is it separate these days) distribution network.

Incidentally, a typically nerdish query regarding subscription: How's the packaging on issues sent out? Card-backed envelope by any chance?

When I've ordered back issues from Titan in the past they've just arrived in a transparent plastic bag. I wasn't too happy as they'd got here a bit worse for wear... :(

Plastic covering.

Note to self... renew subscription when next paycheck comes in.

As I don't have an iPad or other snazzy tablet, just a black n white Kindle, I'd prefer to keep receiving the magazine in paper. While my Kindle does ok rendering graphics, the graphics-intense layouts of STM won't really work well with it. And I don't always want to be tied to the PC or the netbook to read my magazines.
