Star Trek: Maco?

Marc Evans, president of Paramount’s Motion Picture Group sat down with WIRED recently to talk about Star Wars, Star Trek, and more. The article focused on the Star Wars franchise, its continued success, and recent plans to develop Star Wars: Rogue One, a “Star Wars story” set to hit theaters on December 16th, 2016. Trek didn’t get much attention in the interview, but its brief mention may be indicative of a systemic issue within the heads of Paramount execs that see Star Trek as an action-adventure story, rather than the thought provoking cerebral sci-fi that we know and love.

On the heels of a conversation about the premise of Rogue One, Marc Evans told WIRED:
“I often think about the areas of the Star Trek universe that haven’t been taken advantage of,” Paramount’s Evans says. “Like, I’ll be ridiculous with you, but what would Star Trek: Zero Dark Thirty look like? Where is the SEAL Team Six of the Star Trek universe? That fascinates me.”

Star Trek: MACO starring Michael Biehn?

Set during the right time period, I could see some episodes featuring the MACO's, they are interesting. But not a entire series, it would be limited, unless you greatly increased the MACO's duties and responsibilies.

Uh oh. Better get Maco.

I could see features with them being part of an anthology series - but not really the basis for a whole series by themselves.

I agree.

When Voyager was ending, we got the rumor that the next ST would be Star Trek: Navy SEALs. This feels like a resurgence of that rumor. I seriously doubt the next ST will be about commandos. We are getting new ST because old ST's back catalog is doing very well on Amazon and Netflix. I doubt what we'll get will be a significant departure. The take will probably be as fresh as they can get it, but I fully expect a ship, a crew, aliens, and weekly planetary encounters.

References to the series that killed Star Trek the last time should probably be kept few and far between.

At the very least it shouldn't be called "Maco".

"You know the one thing everyone loves about Star Trek? The space?"

"Yeah."

"What about some people not in space?"

"Get out."

As a precedent, there is definitely a lot of brilliant military science fiction in print.

But should there be a whole Trek series along those lines? I think that would kind of be missing the point of Star Trek. And it probably wouldn't be anywhere near as good as the literary stuff, anyway.

MACOs would be a good idea if you were planning on a show where you kill off main characters regularly. They are basically just red shirts in space camo.
