“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed,” Kurtzman said. “He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of ‘Trek’ to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”

Pass, not for me. But hey, others enjoy! Seems like we are finally getting the smorgasbord of Trek choices and I think that's a very good thing.
Why is that a pass for you?

How about waiting until there are actual episodes released?

For all you know it will be nothing like R&M.
This guy only worked as a writer and writers assistant on Season 1.

Ya know what? No.

First of all I've seen enough TV to know that creators either develop recognizable styles or absorb them, so the fact this guy worked on a cartoon I so thoroughly detest is enough of a red flag for me, as I do not want to see any trek with any trace of Rick and Morty DNA on it.

Second, forget who's creating it. I have never liked the idea of a "Lower Decks" series, and I have never understood the widespread fan desire for one. It was one episode of one season of one series, and at that it was "meh" at best. Stretching the concept out to ten or thirteen episodes of that same "meh," will be a waste of digital memory, and making it funny will do nothing to change that. I will not watch it, and I sure as hell won't pay to see it when I'm already not wasting my money to watch STD.

So you go ahead and wait for the episodes. I hope you enjoy the hell out of them.

Overall I think drama is just more appealing to me than comedy. I like my Trek serious or at least semi-serious. If the banana story idea is an indication of the usual fare, I can just tell I'll be falling asleep. I wanted to like The Orville, and saw nearly all of season 1 but in the end, I completely detached from it because of the silliness. The hour long format doesn't help, either. I think TV comedy is better suited for half hour blocks.

Thanks for asking, though. I do support Lower Decks. Looking forward to reading the reactions and opinions about it here. :)

I think LD would make more sense, with the DS9 and TNG precedence. Of course, their Short Treks abbreviation (ST... really?) shows that some workarounds need to be created.
yeah and they refuse to call the kelvin timeline the kelvin timeline so screw them anyway.

jk.

So this Deadline article in the first post of the thread says that it's an 'adult' animated series, but the startrek.com article doesn't mention that at all

In fact it has a quote from Kurtzman saying they're broadening the franchise to 'all ages'.

Someone suggested in the other thread for this, that the writer may have assumed it was an adult show because of the writers previous works.

I would be a lot more excited about this show if it wasn't a flat-out comedy. Yes, there have been funny moments in Trek (like TVH) but I don't know if I'd enjoy a whole series played out like that. I mean, as hilarious as TVH sometimes got, at least it was still serious Trek at its core.

I admit I am intrigued by the concept of a 'lower decks' show, but why did they have to pick the least important ship in Starfleet? Seems to me a show like this would be a lot more exciting if it's done on board a major ship of the line.

I want the captain and XO to go on a planet each episode, die, get replaced by the next two people in the command chain, and then the next episode they go on a mission alone and die and so on :D
TRANSPORTER CHIEF: This little ship has lost about twenty captains and execs this year. Who's next in the chain of command?
TRICORDER TECHNICIAN #7: You are, Chief.
TRANSPORER CHIEF: !@#$

This sounds great.

Rick and Morty is brilliant.

Hoping for some of that magic here.

:techman:

I expect the creator of Rick and Morty will be neutered to a great degree by CBS. This is still part of a franchise and they won't go too far off the beaten path.

I'm quite underwhelmed by this as i never really enjoyed rick and morty, I will probably watch it as its star trek but i would rather they attempt a semi serious show with a reasonable amount of comedy / lightheadedness or the lower decks crew members into awkward situations such as in the TNG episode where theres that one person trying to impress riker, rather than a whole 30 mins of comedy which is just going to be jokes about having to clean the holodeck after a party or Riker .

He didn't create Rick and Morty.

He was a writer and writers assistant on Season 1, but the creators are Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon

He's also a Star Trek fan who wrote the TNG_S8 twitter and an upcoming Short Trek (the Harry Mudd finale in January).

I expect that his Short Trek will give us a taste of what to expect from his comedy, moreso than Rick & Morty or even TNG_S8. There's been plenty of Star Trek comedy episodes, and the setting ("lower decks on an inconsequential ship") would really only benefit from comedic moments.

A workplace comedy with a band of underachieving misfits seems like it can fit quite securely in Star Trek's universe. It's carving out its own niche in that world, and doesn't seem to be overtly parodying or satirizing any known characters or crew (from what little we know now).
