Even on ENT most of the characters acted normally. Trip was a down-to-earth guy who loved food and alcohol, Hoshi had hangups and phobias that interfered with her job and Archer was untested and stumbled trying to do the right thing.

So true. I’m so salty about the hate Michael gets. I think she’s a brilliant character and I think SMG does a great job playing her.

I don't hate Michael. I'm not a fan of how she outshines the captain. I know this is the problem or result of the main character not being the captain. Still, she comes across as the smartest person in the room. If not the smartest, the most important. Even when she screws up she's the one that eventually solves the problem. I'd rather that be the captain or the ensemble.

I really, really, really wish they would have gone a different route. I loved those opening moments on the Shenzhou up to Georgious's death. That seemed like a well oiled crew with the mature, center seat captain and her competent first officer and science officer. THAT was Star Trek.

Ah, Hell. I better get this back on topic.

I love Mariner and Boimler. Mariner is not like Michael, in my opinion. She's not outshining the captain or command crew. It's OK for Mariner to be the smartest in the room. She's got much more experience than Boimler. She's SEEN THINGS! She reminds me of my best friend growing up. Boimler is still really green and lacks real-world experience.

And you know what? She only appears to my knowledge to have outshone Boimler the greenie. She's not been paired with any of the other Lower Decks crew. All she is doing is showing she's more competent than Boimler and that he still has growth to do. Her growth is also apparent but it's a different direction than Boimler.

No, Mariner is not MIchael in my opinion. Mariner is a big fish in a small pond. Put her with the command crew and she might easily be seen in her place. Michael, on the other hand, seems to be the big fish in the big pond but she's not supposed to be. She's like that cartoon with the little dog bossing around the big dog.

3 season of Michael acting like Michael and she ought to be in command. Mariner is simply ready to move up to bridge crew quality if she'd only apply herself. She's probably more capable than Ilia or Chekov. Mariner is probably a Sulu, Uhura, or dare I say a Jadzia? Maybe not quite Jadzia yet because Jadzia has gotten over herself. Mariner could easily be a season 1 Worf. Maybe not quite Yar.

There were these little moments on The Andy Griffith Show, where whenever Barney gets a big discouragement/reality check moment; Sheriff Taylor would do little things to help Barney without him realizing it just to build him back up. Mariner setting up the rendezvous with Boimler and her Ferengi friend reminded me of.

Great actor stuck with a poor character, from my perspective.

I guess we all see things differently, which is totally fine. From my perspective, Michael is one of the most complex and interesting characters in Star Trek. Star Trek is full of one dimensional characters, with little to no development across episodes, seasons, and entire shows. Michael isn’t like this.

Agreed.

I take it then you hated the character of 'Mr. Spock' on TOS. He was 99% of the time portrayed as the smartest person in the room; and saved the day (and often covering Kirk's mistakes) more often than not. (It was about the same ration of Michael Burnham ':always" saving the day, which in actuality as the stories were written (and much like Spock) wasn't always the case; but yeah, she did a lot of the 'saving' - much like Spock did for Kirk and co. on TOS.

Of course super Spock has a magic eyelid to save the day... oh and now he can magically neck-massage people out of consciousness... and why can he build a computer out of stone knives and bear skin? That's what today's people would've said back then XD

MCCOY: Chapel, are you writing this down? Seems like we find a new thing about Vulcan anatomy every week!

"Worst trek ever" says the guy who watched one episode and came on the ep2 thread to tell us he didn't watch ep2. I really wish this site had funnier trolls
Don't call other posters trolls. Disagree on what they are saying or ignore them if you must, but let's not start accusing others of being a troll. Leave that to the mods and always remember: Don't feed the trolls. ;)
