I hate to rain on your parade but you mention the evolution of ST now and where they can go - if you are referring solely to the movie series, they really cannot go very far at all....
Tulin, sorry about the delay in responding - i had to think about this - and be assured i am grateful for your excellent points and candour. And i concur with the responses to you from people like
O'Dib and
DiSiLLUSiON and
Rii
You know, this was a remarkably clever first film: they provided a sort of scaffold which was entertaining on its own for non-fans but at the same time lent itself to ready embellishment from fans by appealing for context from their past experience of star trek. So they captured a wide section of the audience spectrum.
This also explains why i was able to project so much prescence into the characters for myself as well to such an extent that i feel i'd go with them anywhere now and i know the universe would follow suit AUTOMATICALLY generating the appropriate trek themes, settings, situations and politics.
Classic Star Trek was always about getting its message across despite obstacles from the establishment, etc, and its always risen to that challenge just like this film has. I can't help but be optimistic. These people have the courage to burn bridges and accept the resulting daunting challenge and experiment just to gain more insight.
So because the 'texture of Star Trek' exists in fans already, and because the filmmakers have been so clever in drawing from it, i think they could actually manage to fast track -in a few films - what previously took series to perform.
It's 'a revolution.. a whole new approach': Inertia has been lifted from the franchaise and its a much more mobile beastie.
And of course between the films we will have endless discussions and there will probably be other fan spin-offs fleshing things out.
Course, this must inevitably lead onto a tv series (i hope). But really the sky is the limit: they have proved that new actors, sets, spin, makers and new imagininings of classic trek works and retains its essential flavour; and i can look forward to a lifetime of incarnations and exploration with my favourite team (and not forgetting its even possible now for a main cast member to die anytime!).
But i'm so excited now about the prospects that i'm probably immune to any rational arguments as you've probably already discovered

(apologies for the rather essayish and possible dodgy formatting of this post).
