Star Trek in Concert

I moved to Nashville about a year and a half ago from Central Illinois. One of the things that I absolutely love about living here is the diverse amounts of musical events here between the honky tonks on Broadway to the Nashville Jazz Workshop and so much in between. Heck, the Stones played LP Field on Wednesday. It's a literal melting pot of music. It's certainly no wonder Nashville is nicknamed Music City. Last night, my girlfriend and I had the pleasure of attending the Nashville Symphony Orchestra performing the 2009 Star Trek score live with the film. Loving scores and being a big fan of this movie, I have to admit I was more in awe than I was expecting. The orchestra was spot on at every turn. There were moments I forgot they were performing live it was done so well.

The Schermerhorn (the symphony hall in Nashville) was packed. There were those who were dressed in Starfleet uniforms, suits, tuxes, Trek t-shirts. The crowd was truly diverse. But the one constant was that everyone was in awe and had a wonderful time.

After the prologue, we burst into applause, the group performing so skillfully that emotional moment as Winona lies crying with baby Jim adeptly transitioning into the new Trek theme. We laughed at all the right moments. When Leonard Nimoy's Spock turned to see Chris Pine's Kirk on Delta Vega, the crowd again erupted in applause. The audience was on their feet as we entered intermission and again as the credits rolled. While I was a little disappointed that the orchestra didn't play the entire closing credits, the moments of the original Courage theme intertwining with Giacchino's brought a swell of emotion to this fan's soul.

If I have one complaint, it's that there was no live chorus. As the moments with the chorus are few and far between, it makes sense not to bring one in. Nonetheless, it was a little disappointing.

Still, seeing this movie again with a big crowd again after six years was a wonderful experience and the fun of hearing it with a live orchestra is a memory I will treasure forever.

Has anyone else had an opportunity to see this in their city?

I'm jealous. I can't say I keep my ears pressed to the music scene around here, but I live in the DC area and can't remember anything like that ever being done here, at least not to "Star Trek".

(I hope those who came dressed in Starfleet uniforms were at least wearing their dress uniforms for the event. :) )
