According to Engadget, if you buy the HD-DVD season one set of Star Trek and a Toshiba HD-DVD player, you'll get a limited edition phaser remote.

And thats where the company gets you...

The free novelty pressy-button-thingie-ma-doo-da with flashing lights.

you still pay a shit loada money, but hey, you get a free phaser remote.

Still not going to tempt to pay what they are asking for though.

I like my limbs far too much, i'll wait for the price to drop out of the cosmic clouds and down to earth level.

* I love Trek, but I love my limbs more then I do Trek *

One query: are the new Remastered DVD episodes completely uncut 50-minute edits with all the deleted footage restored and new effects added if needs be?

Yes, they are the full episodes, not the episodes edited for syndication.

You've got to be kidding? This will be one of the best hi def releases of the year! You can take one of my limbs. I've seen the quality. It is like watching the series for the first time. There is a story about the promo here: http://www.allthingshidef.com/star_trek_hd_dvd_promo

Meh. I have seen some of the remastereds on tv. The new visuals are nice but not enough to make me buy them just YET. I have just purchased the originals at a great price($110.76 for all three seasons) and the quality of those are clearer then when I watched them on tv as a kid. I mean really how much more quality do we need. I quite enjoy watching Star Trek closer to the way it looked when I was a youngerster, with dust specks and fuzzy effects. I will get the HD version as alternates when they are down to the $30 something level, but will always go back to my original versions when I want to view them as they were before HD broadcasts and cgi effects. :bolian:

I only paid $106.96 for the Trek TOS season 1 HD-DVD/DVD combo set and am VERY happy with the quality.A certain big net DVD/HD-DVD/BlueRay reatiler had 20% all DVD/HD-DVD/BRD's in stock and that applied to the new Trek HD-DVD set as well. The only thing that wasn't quite up to par was the packaging but the everything else about it is outstanding.

I've just watched the first 3 episodes that came from Netflix. I've got to say that the HD version is nothing to shell-out for. It looks about the same as an up-converted standard def DVD on my little 32".

The new effects shots are too cartoony and take me out of the story. I know that's an old complaint, but I've noticed that on some movies, effects that blew me away in the theater looked cheesy on NTSC TV. So I was hoping that was the case with TOS-R and the HD version would look a little more realistic than what I'd been seeing. Not so unfortunately.

It does look great though. If you're a Netflix user I can recommend it, but I don't think it gets a "buy" rating.

I remember getting some movies or series that were originally two-sided, but Netflix had one sided versions to double the amount of disks you had to rent. I think SeaQuest was like that.

The reason I ask is because I want to watch these don't have HD. Since I'm not going to be buying the set, I'm thinking of restarting my Netflix subscription for a month or two if the disks will have the DVD version on them. I don't want to get stuck watching the original DVD release with two episodes per disk which it looks like Netflix offers.

Just to clarify, is the standard DVD part of this set of the remastered versions, or the cleaned up original versions which most of us already have?

It's the 480p (standard TV DVD resolution) version of the remastered episodes.

The size of your TV might be why you don't see a difference. I've read you need a little bigger screen size to see the advantages of HD, but that might just be rumor. I only have a 42" BTW, so I'm not picking, just discussing.

That's what I think of the new effects when I've seen a few episodes on TV. However, I've read (here he goes again) several people claim that the new effects look much more detailed and have more depth in HD.

Seriously, I've been an obnoxious curmudgeon on this board about the HD versions only having the new effects, but between the reviews I've read and the lovely screenshots I've seen, I'm starting to get itchy to sample some HD episodes.

I couldn't have said it better myself. If I want to see special effects, I'm not going to be looking for ST TOS for my haha's. Gimme Kirk & Co. in a '61 Admiral black & white, complete with tubes & rabbit ears. Oh, the good old days.

Now, I WILL be buying the Blade Runner HD version that comes out Tuesday. I'll watch THAT on my 1080p Panasonic 50" with 7.1. Pointing this out just to show I'm a TOS purist!

***Sorry, it was a '56 Admiral now that I think of it!***

My daughter already thinks remotes are toys. I can only imagine if such a relationship were reinforced...yikes.
