A few months ago, as a fun creative exercise, I worked out an outline for my own Star Trek series set during the early years of the Federation. What began as a simple elevator pitch gradually evolved into a full five-season arc, complete with episode titles and loose plot outlines. It’s certainly a long read, but I had a great deal of fun putting it together. I know it’s a series that will never happen, but hopefully someone out there enjoys it.

STAR TREK: FOUNDATIONS

"The galaxy has never been more open… or more dangerous."

Series Overview

Star Trek: Foundations explores the first bold decade of the United Federation of Planets, beginning just three years after its founding in 2161.

The Romulan War is over, but its shadow lingers. Old enemies are gone, yet mistrust between allies remains, and the dream of peaceful exploration is fragile.

The series follows the crew of the USS Endeavour, the seventh ship of the new Dauntless-class, as they journey beyond known space to explore strange new worlds and prove that the Federation can stand united.

This is not just the beginning of a starship’s mission, it's the story of the foundation of Starfleet’s ideals.

Tone and Style

Introduces a new era of exploration, as the young Federation seeks unity and purpose after the Romulan War.

Each episode balances classic sci-fi mysteries with serialized character arcs.

Themes of healing, unity, and diplomacy are woven into a galaxy still recovering from conflict.

Hints of new enemy at key points throughout the season.

The Starship Endeavour (NCC-07)

The Endeavour is the seventh ship of the Dauntless-class, Starfleet’s first generation of Warp 7-capable explorers.

Where the NX-class was experimental and rugged, the Dauntless-class represents a leap forward in technology and ambition, designed by a united Federation for a peaceful future, yet shaped by the harsh reality of the Romulan War.

Class Details

Class: Dauntless-class Long-Range Explorer

Registry: NCC-07

Length: 295m

Top Speed: Warp 7 (sustained), Warp 7.2 (emergency burst for short duration)

Primary Mission: Deep-space exploration, first contact missions, and extending the Federation’s reach.

Secondary Role: Defense of Federation borders and response to emerging crises.

Crew Complement: 125

Defensive Systems

Though exploration is her core purpose, the Endeavour is far from defenseless.
The Federation learned a painful lesson from the Romulan War: explorers must be able to defend themselves.

Photon Torpedoes: Standard complement of forward and aft launchers.

Phase Cannons: Ten deployable turrets positioned along the saucer and secondary hull for wide coverage.

Designed for flexible engagement at multiple angles.

Defensive Shielding: Stronger than NX-class hull plating, but still early in development, requiring constant maintenance and calibration.

Redundant Systems: Critical components are protected with fail-safes, born from lessons learned during the war.

Other Systems and Equipment

Transporters: Primarily for cargo and emergency use. Still considered risky for living beings. Starfleet prefers shuttlecraft or docking for crew movement whenever possible.

Slow cycle time, requiring longer lock-on and re-materialization procedures.

Not certified for routine use by most member worlds yet.

In-Show Impact: Creates dramatic tension when a character must risk a transporter jump.

Helps explain why shuttles are so important for exploration missions.

Adds to the sense of Starfleet being a young organization still ironing out the tech.

Tractor Beam: Primary emitter under the saucer. Secondary emitters in the shuttle bay area for docking assistance.

Capabilities: Standard strength, short-to-medium range: Perfect for towing disabled craft, securing shuttles, or precision orbital adjustments.

Limited precision vs. later Trek ships: Requires crew coordination between helm, ops, and engineering — more like a “grappling winch of light” than the near-effortless tractor beams of the 24th century.

Cannot cut through strong interference: Plasma storms, dense asteroid fields, or certain shield harmonics disrupt the beam easily.

Operational History: Vulcans and Andorians: Have perfected tractor technology for decades.

Humans: Only began deploying it fleet-wide during the Romulan War.

The Endeavour benefits from Federation collaboration, its tractor system uses Vulcan stabilizing field equations combined with Andorian emitter architecture, making it one of the most advanced Earth ships of its generation.

Shuttlebay: Aft section of the engineering hull.

Capacity: 4 standard shuttlepods, plus 2 larger cargo/personnel shuttles. 2 small auxiliary craft (like a work pod).

Design Aesthetic

The hull maintains a sleek, utilitarian design, visibly descended from the NX-class, but with Federation influences from Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite engineers.

Subtle industrial touches remain, a reminder that the Federation’s designs are still transitioning from wartime production.

Nicknamed: Lucky 7

During her shakedown cruise, a catastrophic warp core imbalance developed, unnoticed due to a cascade of malfunctioning diagnostic systems.
By pure chance and luck, a junior engineer ran a manual diagnostic despite all systems reading “green.”

Seconds before the Endeavour was to jump to warp, an action that would have obliterated the ship and crew, he pulled the plug on the warp core and saved the ship.

From that moment, the ship earned her affectionate nickname: Lucky 7.

Her mission patch reflects this legend: a pair of dice showing a perfect seven, and a four-leaf clover, symbolizing hope and fortune.

Navarro frequently tells the tale to dignitaries and new crewmembers, turning it into a piece of shipboard mythology.

The Crew of the Endeavour

The Endeavour’s crew represents the newly united worlds of the Federation: Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites, and more.

Their personal conflicts reflect the political growing pains of the young Federation, giving every mission personal stakes.

Captain Elías Navarro (Human, Spanish) – Commanding Officer

Commander T’Lara (Vulcan) – First Officer

Age: 73 (presents as early 30s)

Background: A decorated Vulcan tactician during the Romulan War, T’Lara now serves as the steady, logical counterbalance to Navarro’s passion.

She secretly questions whether the Federation can endure when logic alone cannot predict its chaotic members.

Dynamic with Navarro: Navarro teases her mercilessly, while she outwardly remains stoic.

Over time, she comes to respect his intuition, even when it contradicts her logic.

Conflict: Struggles to reconcile her Vulcan discipline with the messier, more human ideals of the Federation.

Lieutenant Commander Zahir Qureshi (Human, Pakistani) – Chief Engineer

Age: 47

Background: A brilliant but gruff engineer who worked on NX-class ships during the war.

He joined Starfleet to build for exploration, only to end up constructing ships and weapons for destruction.

Personality: Cynical, blunt, and sarcastic.

Loves machines more than politics.

Often serves as Navarro’s reality check.

Arc: Learns to embrace building for hope rather than survival, rediscovering his idealistic roots.

Lieutenant Shara zh’Varen (Andorian) – Tactical Officer

Age: 26

Background: Young and driven, Shara lost her brother in the Romulan War.

She channels her grief into being the best tactical officer she can be — and keeping her crew safe.

Personality: Passionate, fiery, and sometimes reckless.

Holds grudges, particularly against Vulcans, due to lingering Andorian-Vulcan tensions.

Dynamic: Navarro becomes a surrogate older brother, helping her grow past her anger and distrust.

Lieutenant Selvek (Vulcan) – Chief Science Officer

Age: 28

Background: Part of a new generation of Vulcans willing to collaborate closely with other species.

Though logical and disciplined, Selvek is unusually open-minded and curious for a Vulcan.

Personality: Intellectual and precise, with moments of subtle humor.

Sometimes bluntly honest in ways that surprise his human colleagues.

Dynamics: With T’Lara: She sees him as inexperienced, though she slowly comes to value his perspective.

With Navarro: Their conversations balance science and instinct, often shaping key decisions.

Ensign Vokarr (Tellarite) – Helmsman

Age: 25

Background: The first Tellarite pilot to serve in Starfleet.
Known for daring maneuvers — and an equally daring mouth.

Personality: Argumentative by nature, debates for sport.

Fiercely proud, secretly insecure about breaking barriers.

Dynamic: His constant sparring with Shara zh’Varen brings both humor and tension.

Doctor Marina Solari (Human, Italian) – Chief Medical Officer

Age: 40

Background: A former civilian doctor drafted during the Romulan War.

She now strives to heal not just the physical wounds of the crew, but their emotional scars.

Personality: Warm and compassionate, with a calming presence.

The ship’s moral center.

Dynamic with Navarro: A longtime friend who sees through his charming facade, grounding him when leadership weighs too heavily.

Guess I got to do this in multiple parts.

Season One Arc: The cost of unity and the courage to explore together.

In the wake of the Romulan War, the USS Endeavour works to unite fractured worlds and uphold the Federation’s fragile ideals, unaware that a new threat is rising along the borders.
