Star Trek Fotonovel

Log this under books I forgot existed.

I'm over my Mom's helping clean out some stuff and I find among her tons of paperbacks, some of mine when I was a teen among them was "STAR TREK
Fotonovel #12 AMOK TIME" It boasts "300 full color authentic scene" It's laid out like a comic book and balloons contain the actual dialog from the episode.

I forget those things even were printed. Of course I found a few good condition comic books there as well, a couple of which could bring a shekel or two on ebay.

Anyhow, anyone old Trekker's like me remember these Fotonovels? I guess it was kind of a way to enjoy the episode in those days before VCRs.

^ Absolutely! I loved them as a kid, and over the years I've been able to replace the ones I had with pristine versions, and acquire the ones I'd been missing. In addition to all of the Trek volumes, I also have Fotonovels for Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, The Incredible Hulk, etc., and oversized ones for Alien and Outland.

Yeah, I remember those as a kid when I first got into Star Trek. Only $1.95 until #7 and it went up to $2.25. It's hard to believe that you got all those color pix for so cheap!! The quizzes were too easy. Some of the episodes those chose to do were disappointing to me. I'd rather seen "Journey to Babel" or "Mirror, Mirror" get the treatment over "Metamorphosis" or "A Taste of Armageddon." Oh, well...this was the time before VCRs were common so it was still a way to get a fix whenever the reruns weren't on!!

I don't remember them growing up, but last fall, after getting back into Star Trek after many years away from it, I found a copy of one (A Taste of Armageddon) at the local used books store. I was reluctant to buy it at first, but then decided I would. I'm glad I did, because it helped me see even more of the Star Trek franchise.

The great thing about Fotonovels? They take a lot less time to read than "regular" novels. I wonder why?

I picked up half a dozen of them for $3 on eBay, still in excellent condition. I quite like them.

I was visiting an uncle in Jacksonville once in around 1981 or 82. The husband and I took a walk to check out the neighborhood and saw a sci-fi collectibles store. Well d'uh I had to go in! They had the WHOLE set of those Fotonovels. I wheedled a loan and got them all. I was thrilled!

In the pre-VCR/DVD days, they were right up there with the film clips one could get from Lincoln Enterprises (and which I still have in my possession.)

I had The Deadly Years in Fotonovel. I wonder what happend to it? Probably long gone, as my parents moved from my childhood home over a decade ago

I, however, was all about the Invasion of the Body Snatchers one.

We get the BODY SNATCHERS one in at my Goodwill a couple times per year (maybe some people fall out of love with Brooke Adams after 20 or 30 years?)

But does anybody remember the GREASE one? They rewrote the lyrics into a more traditional PG friendly way in the fotonovel, none of this 'you can get off your rocks' or 'real pussy wagon' stuff from the movie.

Worst FOTONOVEL in execution had to be TWOK. B&W, and probably as many or more flipped/inverted pics as there was in the TMP book.

There was also "Mork and Mindy", and I have the original "Battlestar Galactica Fotonovel", which includes the phrase "F**K YOU, G.L." (spelt out in full) in the lights of an alien city: the SPFX guys' message to their feisty boss, Glen Larson.

Someone tried to reactivate the Fotonovel line with "Blair Witch" but it didn't take off.

The movies they should've gone with for new fotonovels were the Kevin Smith flicks. A Jay and Silent Bob Fotonovel? Hellz to the Yeah!

Jealous? No. Insane? Yes. But that's more a gut reaction to Can't Stop the Music, which is proof that everyone in Hollywood was doing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much coke in 1980....

They aren't "true" photonovels, but Tokyopop has a line of similar books called Cinemanga. I know they produced them for the Star Wars prequels; there's supposedly others, but after flipping through the Star Wars ones in a bookstore I never bothered to look for any others.

^ I saw ones for A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, but never did see the prequels (or Return of the Jedi, for that matter).
