Just watched this one last night after a long while, it's still good despite some of the jokes being a little flat. It's a great little TNG two parter made as a movie with a movie budget.

I did come away with one thought, what would the gang have done had Cochrane actually been killed before they beamed down? That would really put a wrinkle in history now wouldn't it so how would you, or could you fix the timeline?

Like Sisko filling in for Gabriel Bell, I suppose James Cromwell could have played a history specialist on the Enterprise, who is tasked with recreating Cochrane's warp flight, as well as First Contact with the Vulcans, staying in the 21st century and conducting his flight to Alpha Centauri. Then, he has to disappear for Kirk to find him on the asteroid with the Companion. Talk about a tall order

On Reddit someone suggested history could have continued with Lily taking the flight and making first contact.

That could work, but unless she changed her name to "Zephram Cochrane" and conducted her life per vadum to the original Cochrane, it could have serious repercussions to history. Like, would she give the commencement speech ranting about cybernetic zombies?

That's actually quite interesting. I wonder how star trek history would play out had that happened.

I have the 10 movie box set that came out a while back and it has special editions of each movie and I never watched all the bonus features for First Contact, lots of interviews and in one of them one of the producers says that this movie is the birth of Star Trek because without First Contact there would be no Kirk, no Star Trek.
