Star Trek First Contact is the best Star Trek movie.

I don't care about the Wrath of Khan extended opinion, which is clearly imposed by the media and typical "Star Trek movies ranked from..." videos. I love TWOK but I think it's overrated due to the big nostalgia that still makes a lot of fans overrate all related to Spock, Kirk... TOS overall. I think it has a strong beginning and the final 30 minutes are unforgettable but still it has some flaws and it doesn't have the optimism and futuristic approach of FC or TMP. So honestly, in my opinion the best series is TNG by far and the best movie is First Contact. I would even say The Motion Picture, The Voyage Home or The Undiscovered Country in pair or above TWOK.

I really like FC, it still looks good today.
Is it the best? It's not my favourite TNG movie so to me it's not.

We are all different but I find myself drawn to the trilogy and always seem to enjoy TSFS the most.
So really I'm no barometer of what's the best.

I don't have a set favorite. Sometimes I feel like "Wrath of Khan", other times "Voyage Home", still others "First Contact". Or I'll stream a TV episode.

FC is the best as it had chocolate bars

I think its a great film. But it marked the beginning of the slow slide into mindless action blockbuster territory in my opinion. It pretty much retcons Picard into a completely different person.

Leagues ahead of all the other TNG movies, it has a consistent tone and is a lot of fun.

First Contact has a special place for me as the trigger for discovering the world in Trek. Before First Contact, I had watched the odd TOS episode late at night. I saw a new Trek film was coming out, so me and my little bro went to the pictures to see it. Loved it. Went down to the local Blockbuster and the "great consumption" began.

Best TNG flick by a mile. Pity they lost the plot after that.

First Contact is a safe movie, appropriate for the Berman era. As with TNG's three spinoff shows, it makes a couple of adjustments that were probably considered bold at the time, but which seem pretty obvious in retrospect. It plays to the most obvious strengths of TNG... if those strengths are Time Travel, Borg, and the A-Plot/B-Plot formula (That last being also one of the weaknesses that Insurrection played to).

And it is a producer's movie. Because Jonathan Frakes is a producer's director (as is David Carson). It does not re-interpret ST in any significant way, but keeps safely within the Berman parameters of style and continuity. Frakes' cinematic vision for First Contact (Let's make an action movie) was seemingly supported by the studio, Berman, and the Moore/Braga script. He is too gracious, and not hungry enough, to be the type to challenge a producer or studio, making him... well, safe. And his name carries more weight than any other TV director they might have picked.

When Berman team considered Nimoy to direct Generations, they mostly did so hoping he'd agree to cameo. But they also brought him in too late in the process to offer any input. They wanted a director-for-hire; they wanted TSFS Nimoy rather than TVH Nimoy.

All of the TOS films (but one) are director's movies. And all the TNG movies (but one) are producer's movies (They finally got stuck with a sort-of "actual" director, one the studio didn't want, after the studio was mostly done with them too).

The Abrams movies, love them or hate them, are director's movies. I've never seen a Fast [Or] Furious movie so I cannot speak to Justin Lin's level of influence.

A producer's movie can be GOOD. Given a well enough oiled machine (as TNG/Berman Trek was, post S4) it can even come with some supposed assurance of not being terrible. But it can never be great.

It's a super entertaining action movie, well made and directed. But as far as having that Star Trek feel..... Insurrection and Nemesis did that better than First Contact did. For me personally.

And no..... This is not about whether or not it's 'real Star Trek'. If it has Star Trek in the title, it's real Star Trek. It's about what, to me personally, has a Star Trek vibe to it.

I just rewatched it. It’s the best of the TNG films, but it’s still not great, IMO. There are elements that are very good, but I was surprised how cringe I found pieces of it. I recalled liking the deflector dish sequence, but it didn’t hold up as well as I’d hoped.

I’d put FC above TFF but below all the other original crew films. And I’d still watch TFF over it.

TSfS very much feels like producer Bennett's, TWoK very much like a mix/compromise between him and director Meyer (though they basically did have a pretty similar vision), TFF between him and director Shatner and TUC between producer Nimoy and director Meyer.
