Star Trek fan badly burned in Santa Barbara fire needs your help!

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed. The main thing I know is that such burns are incredibly painful....

I'm really sorry to hear that, TJ. :( I will keep my fingers crossed for both of them!

Thanks, Top.

The latest update from their families is that they're both still critical but stable, being kept in comas and on respirators.

Lance has had the first surgery to remove 3rd degree burned tissue, but the biggest concern is that he has developed pneumonia because of burn damage in his lungs.

Carla is expected to recover sooner than Lance, but is still being kept in a coma until she can breathe on her own.

Argh! *wrings hands* I hate reading things like this. I'll have to donate. I also read on the Facebook page that they can't find the couple's cats? Awwww, I hope they're still alive and someone got them to a shelter or took them in. It just makes my heart hurt to read this.

I didn't know about the cats. Do they know if they got out of the house? :(

Thanks, GW.

They're pretty sure the cats (Garak & B'Elanna) got out. There are several folks combing the local animal shelters and putting up signs with their photos to try to track them down. The shelter folks were actually pretty encouraging - they said cats are pretty good about taking care of themselves, and they've had good luck reuniting many of them with their owners after fires.

That's good. If they got out of the house, they're probably okay. I just hope they can be found.

Garak and B'Ellana; that's cute.

Lance's dad posted this on the 26th:

Lance's condition as of today remains Critical. He is on life support and is battling pneumonia. They are allowing him to rest this week before possibly performing graft surgery next week if his body is physically able to handle the new wounds the surgery would create. His breathing is of the most concern and the pneumonia needs to be controlled before they feel comfortable enough to operate again.
Once again thank you for your continued prayers and support. Will let you know when anything new develops.

Carla's situation seems to be slightly better - she doesn't have the lung damage that Lance suffered, and they believe she'll be moved off the critical list soon, although she is still on a respirator and in a coma.

For those who don't have much money, here's another way to help ... the Facebook page has a list of household items as well as personal items (books, comics, etc.) that they'll need, which are being collected for them.

Items to Donate

Carla in particular loves Star Trek, Firefly, The Hulk, and X-Men. Lance likes historical non-fiction, especially naval history. Michael MacDonald is collecting items at this address:

I really hate to sound insensitive but would people come to my rescue if me and my family were injured in a house fire or natural disaster?

Sure we would. If it ever happens that you're caught in a disaster - let us know. I'd gladly donate some money to help you through too.

Just got back from the fundraiser dinner in Santa Barbara. The place was packed, and there were two TV news crews there to document the event. When we left there was a line outside the restaurant of people waiting for tables! :)

We also got some great news on Lance & Carla's condition from Lance's mom this evening. Carla is awake and off the respirator, and Lance had the bandages removed from his face and is looking good.

Best of all, they've both been moved off the "critical" list. :techman:

They still have a long way to go (they're both undergoing skin graft surgery later this week, most likely the first of many), but this is the first good news we've had, and it's very encouraging.

I'm glad they're both off the critical list. I hope everything goes smoothly from here on. :bolian:

That's great news.

BTW, the money finally cleared and entered my papal account, so I sent a little bit. I wish I had more to send.
