Star trek Fact Files and Collector's Edition magazine.

I'm thinking of getting both the Fact Files and the TNG Collector's magazine bar the DVDs, I have heard that the latter is a reworking of the former's content, but I wanted to know if they are word for word the same or merely have similar information. I know the latter has behind the scenes information that the other lacks.

Some of it's word-for-word identical, but the Collector's Edition is updated through to Nemesis (or is it the end of Enterprise?) wheras Fact Files end at Enterprise season one. The updates take the shape of minor rewordings, extra paragraphs, boxouts etc, as well as a few new pages (including stuff on the Scimitar and a Constellation-class cutaway, both of which are filled with conjecture as opposed to the canon-only fact file info).

The collector's edition's strength is the behind-the-scenes info. It's often fascinating.

I only got a few old second-hand collector's editions, but i don't think they cover as much as the fact files do - no Voyager, Enterprise or DS9, except in passing references.

Thank you for your response, I thought the Star Trek Collector's Edition was TNG focus centric.

The "Fact Files" finish up with Season One of ENT. The same company then started revamping the material into slim magazines to accompany DVDs. The only one of those I bothered buying was the "Nemesis" movie issue since it essentially acted as an all-new supplement to my comprehensive "Fact Files".

They are redone Fact Files though with extra content, isn't that worth buying alongside the Files?

^What if you didn't have the Fact Files at all? Would you be missing anything if you only got the Collector's Edition?

I think they are probably both significant to warrant owning, especially since they are collector's items, so if you are a serious contender for that sort of thing, there is no love lost.

The Collectors Edition only came out for TNG and TOS while the Fact Files cover all the series. The Collectors Edition reference the other series at times, but don’t cover them completely. The Fact Files is also a much larger collection so it also covers TOS and TNG in much more detail.

The Collectors Edition has a tiny bit more info from later Enterprise episodes and Nemesis worked into articles where relevant. But it really is a tiny amount, I'd just go for the Fact Files unless you can get the Collectors Edition really cheap. I think most of the behind the scenes info from the Collectors Edition is re-released from other behind the scenes books before, so whether or not you have those books will determine the value of that addition.

I know but it's one thing for a collector to have a physical representation in their hands. Memory Alpha is fine but ultimately intangible.

Lots. Because they were magazines reconfigured out of "Fact Files" material to accompany particular TNG, TOS and movie DVDs. No booklets were made for DS9, VOY or ENT; they are only referenced in some entries. The "Nemesis" booklet was the only issue that was "all-new" because that film came out after the "Fact Files" part-work finished publication.
