Star Trek Excelsior: Forged in Fire

I just noticed this available for pre-order on amazon.
Is this part of a series or is it the beginning of a series or is it a stand alone novel?

It's a standalone that could be the first in a series depending on audience response.

While I'm all for it, wouldn't yet another series be a bit much, considering how many there are now and the limited slots for books? Just a thought.

Unless the editors bring back the old release schedule. I wouldn't complain about that.

Well, it wasn't the editors' decision to do the current schedule (if you're referring to the number of books per month). That was Pocket Books' decision.

As for another series, I'm not too keen on it. I've been looking forward to Forged in Fire as much as the next person, but I really don't think we need yet another series.

If it does well, then maybe an approach like the old numbered sequels would be in order. Sulu could have another adventure that is consistent with or builds on elements from Forged in Fire.

I wonder if Pocket Books will give Trek more book slots in 2009 to ride the wave of interest generated by the new movie? If so, I could see a sequel getting one of those slots.

Ugh! Not Mangels and Martin. I can't stand their writing. Not among my favorite authors. I think they need one more guy on their team, a good writer!

Sorry for coming off harse but I've tried thier books haven't really liked any of them.

So, why not just say that, instead of implying that neither of them can write.

I think we do not need another series, unless PB will release more than a mass market paperback a month, on average.

Actually I think M&M are amongst the best in the Trek-lit sphere right now.Layered stories and a certain "inner life" feel to their characters and their wider universe.
I would love to read their take on either TOS or Vanguard.

M&M are among the very best of the current crop of writers. As for a new series, why not? Or they can't just be considered TOS like the Vulcan's noun books?

I think one book a month is perfect, not everyone finds the time to read a buzillion books all year long you know... and it's not as if the number of releases isn’t being pumped up with all the anthologies containing multiple novels we now get.

I do agree it might not be best to have a whole new series given the all the currents ones on the go though. But, an Excelsior series wouldn't be a whole new series, just one, quite important, well known and far from obscure, part of TOS.

I wouldn't minda a Excelsior series myself. Yes I know we already have a ton of series, but as long as we have 12 pb slots a month it probably wouldn't be that hard to squeaze in one more series. I know alot of people want one book for each series a year, but personally I'd be willing to wait for another series as long as Excelsior is good.

Couldn't it kinda be argued that this is actually the second Excelsior series and that The Sundered was the first. Because I could have sworn this was announced this announced as a sequel to The Sundred, although I guess now it turns out it's a prequel.

^ It was never going to be a sequel to The Sundered. Forged in Fire was always planned as the backstory to "Blood Oath," which necessitated a dating consistent with that episode's establishment of when Kor, Kang, Koloth, and Curzon Dax took the blood oath. That would make it prior to The Sundered. :)

^^Nope, as far as I can recall, it was always described as a prequel, or at least as a book that came before The Sundered.

combining the words: "Star," "Trek," and "Excelsior" is a sure fired way to get me to buy the book, and i hardly ever read Trek lit nowadays.

I'd love an Excelsior series, even if it's done as an occasional one, like the Gorkon/Klingon Empire is at the moment.

You can never have too much Treklit

Oh ok, guess I was mistaken then. I cannot wait for this book, I've been dying to learn the backstory of Blood Oath since I fist saw it, and now we finally will!:klingon:
