Star Trek: Equinox

STAR TREK: EQUINOX

After being pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker in 2370, Captain Rudolph Ransom made the decision to continue through territory controlled by the Krowtonan Guard and half his crew were killed. He and his crew would never fully recover from this blow and it would lead to their eventual destruction.

What would have happened if Ransom had added those extra six years to his crew’s journey and gone around Krowtonan space?

Let’s go back to the beginning and find out...

TEASER

Dressed up to the nines in his EVA suit, Captain Rudolph Ransom paused from his collection of biological detritus and looked around him. Four other crewmembers were also in their EVA suits taking biological samples from the barren asteroid. A few days earlier a cloud of comets passed through this system and left some interesting debris behind. Ransom and his brand new crew of scientists were sent by Starfleet on a newly-commissioned Nova-class science vessel to shake out the bugs on a milk run. Ransom had left his first officer, a prickly by-the-book woman whose family had been in the fleet since before the founding of the Federation, to supervise the engineers as they tuned and retuned the engines, and tweaked half the systems on the ship. He preferred to lead by example and against his XO’s advice had donned the EVA suit and been the first into the shuttle. Ransom had a plan for his new crew. He would stop off at Deep Space Nine for some rest and relaxation, take in the scientific sights on Bajor and then head back to Earth for debriefing and reassignment.

Ransom turned his gaze away from the asteroid and looked up at the small starship overhead. The USS Equinox was right off the production line and he was its first commander. One of a new breed of science vessels, the Equinox was destined to push the boundaries of the known science and take the Federation into a new era of knowledge. Although initially hesitant of taking command, since his promotion was only due to a freak run of luck, Ransom had taken to the centre chair with aplomb and relished the seat, knowing that he could make a difference while he was sat there. But he also liked being on the forefront of all the activity, a trait which his XO told him would get him killed, but he never wanted his crew to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself.

Captain, we’ve got all the samples we need from this asteroid. That’s the last of them,’ the chief science officer, Lieutenant John Bowler, said to his commanding officer. ‘I’d love to take a look at these under the ’scope.’

Ransom smiled. As a scientist himself he knew what drove these people. ‘Alright people, our chariot awaits. The sooner we’re done here, the sooner I can get you to Bajor.’

That prompted smiles from everyone and a few minutes later Ransom was back on the bridge, allowing Commander Macha Hernandez to return to her own chair. Ransom entered a command on the arm of his chair and it reclined slightly, allowing him to relax while still providing a commanding presence. The bridge was bright and airy, reminiscent of the old Constitution-class ships of the previous century, though without the primary colours and he liked it that way, feeling that it was comfortable to work in.

The turbolift doors opened and Bowler emerged, dressed in his uniform once again. ‘Captain, all the biological samples have been safely secured and I have my team analysing the cometary fragments. We’re ready when you are.’

Ransom nodded and turned to Hernandez. ‘Anything else before we get underway?’

His XO let a small grin touch at her lips as she shook her head. ‘No sir, the engineers haven’t caused too many problems.’

‘Alright then; helm, lay in a course for Deep Space Nine and engage at half impulse until we clear the system.’

‘Aye sir,’ Ensign Dorothy Chang replied as she input commands into her console.

‘Captain, I’m picking up an unusual energy signature,’ tactical officer and security chief Lieutenant Maxwell Burke called out. ‘We’re being scanned. It’s some kind of coherent tetryon beam.’

Ransom was out of his chair instantly. ‘Can you identify the source?’

Burke shook his head as he tried in vain to do so. ‘No sir, it’s almost as if it came out of nowhere.’

Ransom around command area to the tactical console. ‘What have you got?’

‘Nothing, whatever scanned us has gone.’

Ransom didn’t like the idea of being scanned by something in the shadows. ‘Keep the sensors on it just in case.’

‘Captain,’ Chang said. ‘There’s a displacement wave heading toward us.’

‘Go to full impulse, how long before we can go to warp?’

‘Thirty seconds, but the wave will be overtake us in twenty.’

‘Ransom to engineering, I need more power to the impulse engines, now!’

Working on it,’ the chief engineer, Lieutenant William Yates replied harriedly.

‘Fifteen seconds,’ Chang called out as she tried in will the small science vessel to go faster.

‘Yates, I need those engines!’ Ransom called down again.

Go!’ Yates replied.

Chang slammed the heel of her palm on the impulse engines pad and the ship surged ahead. ‘It’s still with us, eleven seconds.’

‘Can we outrun it?’ Hernandez asked, her by-the-book stoicism slipping slightly.

‘If you can give me five seconds,’ Chang replied.

‘All hands brace for impact,’ Ransom toggled the ship’s comm and sat down in his chair.

The displacement wave broke over them, sending the small science ship spinning out of control. Even though everyone was holding on to something, many were still tossed around, slamming into bulkheads and hitting the deck with sudden force.

All of a sudden, the ship came to a stop.

Ransom was the first to open his eyes, and he immediately wished he hadn’t. His bridge crew were sprawled across the deck, and the smell of burnt wiring and charred flesh assaulted his nostrils. Conduits hung down from the ceiling and several circuits and consoles were burnt out, the remnants of the fire suppression system still in the air. He struggled to sit up and realised that he was pinned by a fallen beam.

The last thing he saw before the darkness claimed him, was the ship’s dedication plaque, and the motto he had chosen to explore the galaxy beside.

Go, Xeris, GO! I always had a wistful feeling about Ransom, like he coulda been a contender, y'know? Looking forward to this.

I'm glad to see you're doing this. It'll be interesting seeing your take of Ransom in this alternate universe might have been tale.

Thanks guys, I got the idea since I'm reading Equinox now and wincing at Carey's nautical terms, (fairly often). I always wondered what Ransom would have been like had half his crew not been killed, and who they might have encountered, what might they have found to get home...and so on.

Since this now makes the fourth Star Trek project I'm working on, I might not post as often as I'd like, but I will try to devote equal time to all my projects. On a side note, I think I can wrap up Stargate: First Contact in another 5-6,000 words, but it depends where the characters take me.

I like Ransom's crew but I only have about 12 crewmen to play with so if anyone wants to throw a few names in, preferably alien because all the Equinox crew were human, I'll include them.

Keep it up Xeris, pretty soon you will have all of the series under your belt. Like how your doing an Equinox series, since noone has really done anything w/ the ship and the crew. Cant wait for more to come.

Interesting to see someone else tackle the Equinox and her crew. Quite a ways back, I was involved with helping to launch a fanfic series which explored the Equinox's journey, but without changing its fate. Unfortunately, some misunderstandings between myself and the other people involved in the project led to my early departure from it, and it didn't end up going quite as far as originally envisioned. I find it particularly interesting that you've chosen to change Ransom's decision and take a 'what if' approach to telling the ship's story, since I can't remember ever seeing a whole lot of 'what if' scenarios in the Trek fanfic universe in all the time I've been paying attention to fanfic in general and Trek fanfic in particular.

Good luck with the story; I'll be watching to see what you do.

P.S.: Since you said you were looking for original characters to populate the Equinox's crew, I've got a character you can use; her name is Estella Jakor, and she was created specifically for the aforementioned Equinox fan project that I ended up parting ways with. Her specifics are that she's a half-Human/half-Klingon (like B'Elanna) medical officer, but is way more prickly than B'Elanna ever was. However, you don't have to stick with any of her backstory, or even her role on the ship; feel free to make changes as you see fit.

Was that the Equinox project that ran on this BBS a few (maybe more than a few) years back? If so I was involved too! Actually wrote one of the episodes. I think it all kinda fizzled out, there was definitely dissention on the series direction and, if memory serves me right, Emperor Tiberious actually rebooted the whole series in the end, giving back Ransom a full crew and leading to a what if scenario.

Good luck with this Xeris, Equinox was always more what I imagined Voyager should be.

Yeah, I remember that series - might even have it somewhere on my other companion saved to disk. Some of the episodes were pretty good, if memory serves right.

Whatever happened to Emperor Tiberius? He doesn't seem to be around very much at all anymore!

I like the name, but my feeling is that it is more suited to a half-human/half-Bajoran character, one who lived on Valo II and joined Starfleet during the Occupation but we learn something about her that will upset people :D

Ransom opened his eyes and found that he was no longer on the bridge, but in sickbay. Standing over him were the fuzzy outlines of two people, his acerbic XO and Doctor Jakor Estella, his half-human/half-Bajoran chief medical officer. Both women were staring at him as he pulled himself up to a sitting position. He looked around the sickbay and noticed several white sheets and every biobed filled.

‘I’ve converted cargo bay three into a makeshift triage centre,’ Jakor told him immediately.

‘How many did we lose?’

‘Five,’ Hernandez replied. ‘But I have some more bad news.’

‘Worse than losing five people to some obscure displacement beam? Where the hell are we, anyway?’

Hernandez sighed. ‘That is the bad news. According to my preliminary scans of the local stars, we’re seventy thousand light years from where we were.’

‘Where exactly are we?’ he asked, needing secondary confirmation that his math was right.

‘We’re at the extreme edge of the Delta Quadrant,’ she replied.

Ransom slumped back onto the biobed. ‘Do we know what brought us here?’

‘Not yet.’

‘Then find out, I think we’d all like to get home,’ he snapped.

‘He’s got a concussion,’ Jakor replied with a slight grin. ‘But he does have a point.’

‘I’m working on it, but half our systems are out from the...trip.’

‘Do the best you can,’ Ransom replied and lay down again. ‘Doc, give me something for the pain and let me go. I want to get back to the bridge.’

‘What’s left of the bridge is being repaired, Captain. We’ve set up auxiliary control in engineering.’

‘We need a secondary bridge,’ Ransom muttered. ‘I’ve seen this happen on several ships. Make note of it’.

‘Aye sir,’ Hernandez replied.

‘I’m going to engineering,’ Ransom said as Jakor placed a hypospray against his neck.

‘Just be careful, I have enough people to treat without you coming back.’

‘How bad is it?’ he asked as he stood up.

‘Five dead, fifty injured, seven seriously.’

Ransom nodded. ‘Who did we lose?’

‘Captain Ransom to engineering, red alert,’ Lieutenant Burke called.

‘What’s going on, Lieutenant?’

‘We’ve been scanned by some kind of array.’

‘I’m on my way,’ he replied as the channel went dead. ‘Burke?’

He heard a strange whispering sound as he turned to face Hernandez and Jakor and watched them vanish in some kind of transporter beam, quickly followed by himself. Looking around, he saw an old farmhouse and a woman with a pitcher of what looked like lemonade. All around him, his crew looked dazed and confused.

Putting two fingers in his mouth, he whistled. ‘Alright, everyone, listen up. We have no idea where we are or who this woman is. I suggest not eating or drinking anything until we ascertain the truth. Split up into groups of five or six and look around. Let me know the minute you find anything worth reporting.’

They all nodded or answered and he returned his gaze to the woman, who had just been joined by an old man with a banjo. The two old folks shared a glance for barely a second but it was enough for Ransom who had made a living as a scientist who could read people. Snapping his fingers for the two closest officers to join him, Burke and Hernandez, he set off for the steps to the porch of the old house. The old man started playing the banjo until Ransom reached over, pulled it from his hands and passed it to Hernandez.

‘Who are you and what are we doing here?’

The old man squinted at them and looked around. ‘Who I am is of no concern of yours,’ he answered in a hoarse voice, his tone condescending.

‘And what are we doing here?’ Hernandez pressed.

‘Lemonade?’ the old woman asked, seemingly appearing from nowhere, and still carrying that damnable pitcher.

‘Thank you, no. Why are we here?’ Ransom asked, his voice a little louder this time.

‘Are you hungry, maybe some corn?’ the old woman asked with her fake smile.

Before Ransom could answer, Burke pulled his phaser and vaporised the platter of corn sitting on the porch ledge. ‘No thanks.’

‘Very well,’ the woman replied in a voice halfway between hers and the old man’s, ‘since no one wants any refreshment, we’ll move our schedule along a little.’

‘Minor bipedal species, such arrogance,’ the old man muttered as Ransom and his people were herded toward a barn.

‘Nobody resist,’ Ransom called out and turned to an attractive young woman. ‘Where are you taking us?’

‘For tests,’ she replied in the old woman’s squeal. ‘It won’t hurt a bit.’

‘I’ll bet,’ Burke muttered from beside him.

‘Where the hell are we anyway?’ Hernandez asked as the trio joined the rest of the crew.

‘We’re only a hundred kilometres away from the ship,’ Bowler told them. ‘We must be on that array we detected.’

‘Logical,’ Ransom muttered. ‘But I’d rather be there than here. Any way we can get back to the ship without force?’

‘Unlikely, since we don’t even know where the transporter room is, if they have one.’

‘Well, they have holography, and this is quite sophisticated. The most advanced I’ve ever seen, and I worked with Doctor Zimmerman,’ Bowler answered cryptically.

‘Meaning?’ Ransom asked, glaring at his chief science officer.

‘A civilisation with technology this advanced will most likely have transporters that resemble nothing we would recognise as such.’

‘Clarke’s Third Law,’ Hernandez said and the others looked at her. ‘A twentieth century physicist and science fiction writer, Arthur C Clarke, postulated that any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic.’

‘So you’re saying they’re really advanced?’ Burke asked. ‘I could have told you that without all the tech talk.

‘Stow it, people. We have bigger problems,’ Ransom told his senior officers as a holographic wall disappeared and a row of empty examination tables appeared.

‘“Tests,” she says,’ Burke muttered. ‘That’s an understatement.’

‘They can conduct whatever tests they like,’ Ransom said, squaring his shoulders. ‘But I’ll be damned if I’ll give them the satisfaction of screaming,’ he added as he suddenly found himself lying on one of the tables. ‘Guess all those old stories of alien abductions was true.’

From the frying pan into the fire! I did note that Ransom did not seem very startled to find himself on the array. Either he has nerves of steel or he's still feeling the effects of the concussion.

Looking forward to more!

I'm liking this take on Ransom. He's either the coolest cucumber to come down the pike in some time or there's something else here at work...

"were true". Ransom doesn't seem as acerbic as he did in the tv eps-you building a kindler, gentler? While this reads well-its still a Voyager re-hash, and I'm interested in the new-I know you have to build up but I'm impatient, as usual....

Ah, I remember the old Star Trek Equinox series from years ago, me and Captain Dumbass had been considering at many times to continue with the series or at least elements of it.

A couple of years ago I wanted to write a sequel to my story "The Machine God", it would explain what happened to Tera Selon and the Bionem in his head, then jump a couple of years into the future to the USS Voyager after "Equinox".

Voyager had come across a trail of destroyed Borg Cubes that apparently had been cut into pieces by someone or something, in the hope of finding an ally they were following the trail only to run into a much more improved Bionem that was busy fixing itself.

The Equinox Five would appear in this story again as well as Tera Selon/Bionem in his head who had merged to become a new lifeform.
Tera would aid the Voyager crew but leave them with a warning; what the true function of the Bionems is and that they will be looking for the Federation now that they know it exists.

Who knows, I might still write "Machine God 2.0" in the future.

Edit: Sorry Starkers, mixed the names up by mistake.

Star Trek: Equinox is going on a short hiatus while real life throws a few curve balls.

It will be back within the next month if all goes well.

Take care of what you need to take care of--dont' worry about us--we'll still be here ready and eager when you return.
