Star Trek: Epimetheus

This is it guys, the UBER ultimate new series premise. ;)

An excelsior class Federation ship (circa 2292) is on a routine mission when it is struck by a Temporal singularity and thrown back in time by over 200,000 years to the time of the Iconians and other civilisations long since gone by the time of the Federation. The crew must try to survive in a now unknown universe and try to find a way back to the future, there attempts to remain obscure prove to be ineffective and they get caught up in the galactic affairs of that time period and even end up fighting in a war against an enemy so strange and yet so powerful that the fate of the future may lay in their hands.

I like the idea. Though, I'd modify it just slightly to include an "authorized-but-hush-hush" experiment with a prototype 'temporal deflector' like the one used by the alt-universe Janeway.

However, the technology itself was developed right after the events of "Star Trek: The Voyage Home". A device designed by The Daystrom Institute & The S.C.E., intended to be deployed in the event someone tries to alter events in either the past or future via The Guardian Of Forever or through attempts at Kirk's slingshot manuever with a Bird-Of-Prey or another capable vessel. It was The Department of Temporal Affairs' own version of the U.S.S. Excelsior's transwarp "Great Experiment".

A prototype temporal deflector eventually meant to be embedded aboard the (built-centuries-from-now) U.S.S. Premonition / U.S.S. Relativity. However, things go screwy... which of course catapults them across time & right into the laps of the Iconians, T'Kon Empire, etc.

Considering the vast difference in technology, any lengthy survival of the Federation ship, especially if the Iconians were really gunning for them, would be unlikely.

Thanks for the suggestion but i've already got an idea on why the anomaly appears ;) and it links in with the storyline I have planned. 200,000 years in the past the Iconians are experimenting with a huge Chronoton Bomb, when they detonate it it has unforseen consequences, it punches a hole through spacetime and into the future where it pulls in the Federation ship by accident, the hole collapses again into nothingness but throws the Excelsior class ship back in time.

How does it tie in with the storyline you ask?

Far out in space in the void between galaxies exists the Shades, a group of entitys heading on a journey direct for the Milky Way, collectiveley they appear to be nothing more than huge dark clouds similar to thunderstorm clouds with lightning, they can attack ships with huge bolts of energy. They are very dangerous and survive only by consuming the stars within Galaxies. They came here from another Dimension through a super massive blackhole in the centre of a nearby Galaxy, a Galaxy which they then consumed. Having extinguished that Galaxy they set course for the Milky Way but before their entire race set course they had already sent ahead a scouting party. The Iconians aware of the threat from the Shades found out that the only way to hurt them and kill them was with Chronoton Radiation, they were experimenting with a huge Chronoton bomb which they hoped would be powerful enough to wipe out thousands of shades at a time, it is during a first test of the bomb that the hole through time is created and the Federation Ship is pulled through.

In grand finale of the series after victory in the battle against the shades in the void between Galaxies, the Iconians on the brink of collapse grant the Starfleet crew one last favour, they help send them home but the calculations arn't accurate and the Excelsior class ship is thrown through time and exits into the year 2380.

Another nice little twist is this:

A Vulcan crew member on the ship turns out to be a Romulan spy who decides to take the opportunity of being 200,000 years in the past to stop Humans on Earth developing and becoming a civilisation, they hijack the ship and ........... thats all i'm tell you for now ;)

Considering the vast difference in technology, any lengthy survival of the Federation ship, especially if the Iconians were really gunning for them, would be unlikely.

Thats the kind of thing that gets my goat regularly in this forum.:scream: Why are you assuming the Iconians would be gunning for them? Picards assessment was that the Iconians were possibly a friendly civilisation and that the other races who attacked them merely feared them because of their gateway technology. In this series the Iconians actually turn out to be a friendly civilisation and are infact trying to protect the Galaxy from a strange and deadly enemy (see top spoiler for details).

Also throughout the series the Iconians and Starfleet crew work together more and more and a time comes when the Iconians actually grant the Starfleet crew access to the network of portals.

Another thing aswell is that everyone always complains at my ideas of introducing new technology and say they dont want more powerful ships that are equal or stronger than any enemy. So in this series the ship is far from safe and they have to use their brains to get out of situations rather than their weapons and technology and treknobabble.

Again, it's STILL predominantly gee-whiz fancy technology. Sure, it's set on an Excelsior class ship - and you've mentioned the crew have to use their brains to get out of situations, but you've not really mentioned who the crew of the vessel would be which, surely, is at the heart of any series.

We know one character is a Romulan masquerading as a Vulcan - right, that's nice. But who else is on the ship. Who are the other major players in your show? How will the battle against the Shades sustain the series for, I guess, seven seasons?

Afterthought? I'm not sure Afterthought is that impressive a name for a ship.

You were the one who said that they got caught up in a war between powerful species. If this enemy was powerful enough to threaten the Iconians (which it would have to be to give the story any sort of dramatic tension) then it would stand to reason that they would make incredibly short work of an Excelsior-class ship.

Uber-tech isn't the answer. Who are your characters, what are their motivations? And they'd better have something beyond 'staying alive' and 'getting home'.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, give me a chance to post it!! and I assure you fancy technology isn't a driving factor, if anything they regularly get an ass whooping and i'll give you more info. There's nothing wrong with saying 'sounds good I look forward to character summarys etc etc', that would at least give me a positive attitude to work on further info. Any and all ideas anyone ever gives will get the same 'uber technology' criticism, I really dont understand why you assume uber tech will play a roll.

Just think aswell, we get to find out how and why the Iconian civilisation collapses, does the Federation ship play a major roll?

Stay tuned for more.

An enemy that literally eats entire stars is a threat to ANY species regardless of technology level, plus the Iconians rely too heavily on their gateways/portals to get about and have a very tiny fleet with which to fight the shades with. I have plenty of plot twists in my head right now also, that I will get down in writing to post it.

I assure you I will return to the thread with more information about characters, plotlines and more info on different species and the shades. Give me a chance, i've posted a synopsis to get a bit of interest and then i'm going to give more info out as I write it up and set it out right.

Afterthought? I'm not sure Afterthought is that impressive a name for a ship.

I never said it was the name of the ship and epimetheus doesn't just mean afterthought, it can also mean hindsight which I feel is a fitting name for a series focusing on a ship that's gone back in time. Also the crews knowledge of how things will be 200,000 years in the future plays a roll in the series in some of the plot twists.

Your excuse last time was that you never had the chance to post it before people started slaughtering your idea - yet you never actually posted character ideas despite several prompts.

You'd have thought that you'd have taken that suggestion onboard when putting this idea up and actually provided character outlines from the get-go.

Don't get defensive. We ARE all still trying to make suggestions to make your project work - and your accusation about everyones pitches falling victim to uber-tech isn't true, you criticised my proposal because it was exactly the reverse and I could also point you towards several fanfictions where the pitch doesn't revolve around uber-tech.

Didn't feel it necessary since all the hope and positive attitude I had for my idea went out the window because of everybodys foul comments, thats why i've come up with a new idea.

You'd have thought that you'd have taken that suggestion onboard when putting this idea up and actually provided character outlines from the get-go.
When I get a brain storm idea I like to get it out there straight away instead of waiting, the rest of the information can come gradually as I get it all down. This is a message board not an interview room, it's not like i'm applying for a job writing the new series and you're going to be the boss who lets me do it. Relax a bit.

I think you're getting things a bit backwards, I'm not the one who criticises people for using uber tech in their fanfic, i'm criticising the people who actually do the criticising about uber tech. Get it right.
People have moaned at me for apparently using uber tech like you have at the top of the thread, THAT is why this time around i'm trying to keep things to a minimum.

I've had a change of mind about the Excelisor class ship and the year it's from, i'm not into the older style ships and I reckon the series crew should have access to all up to date info we're familiar with and more plus I'd miss the trusty Quantum Torpedos so the series is now based on a Sovereign Class ship from the year 2375 sent back 200,000 years. But fear not, just because we have a sovereign class ship with up to date weapons we're familiar with doesn't mean it will be a match for ships of the Iconian era.

EPISODE ONE:

The newly commissioned USS Sisko sets course from Earth on a routine mission to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone. All goes as normal and they are almost half way there when a rip in the fabric of spacetime sucks in the ship and spits it back out 200,000 years into the past into the heart of iconian space. The Sisko suffers damage and total power loss during the time jump and the injured and now unconcious crew are beamed aboard an Iconian Base ship, a huge vessel 5 times larger than the Sovereign class Sisko. The crews injuries are treated and the Iconians explain to the crew when they awake that a test of a new Chronoton bomb unexpectedly opened a rip though time and sucked them through time 200,000 years and the Iconians dont know how to get them back. The Iconians agree to help fix their ship but are unwilling to render any other assistance as they do not have the time or resources to aid any further due to their war against the Shades. Just as the USS Sisko is fixed the Iconians detect a Shade cloud heading for them at high warp, the number of shades in the cloud numbering in the thousands, The Iconians are shocked at such a high number and believe the Shades are aware of the Bomb test. The USS Sisko and crew are sent packing and a confused and lost crew reluctantly sets course away from the Iconian base ship, leaving it to battle with the strange Shade Cloud, as the crew reach a safe distance they look on in shock as the cloud engulfs the Iconian Baseship and destroys it, three other Iconian ships retreat leaving the Sovereign no other alternative but to run also.

EPISODE TWO:

The USS Sisko having looked through the ships database about the Iconians sets course for what they believe to be the Iconian homeworld, en route they pick up a planetary distress call but just as quick as they recieve it it cuts out and all goes quiet.
The Sisko alters course to investigate and upon arrival at the origin of the distress call discover nothing but planetary debris and not even a star. The crew are baffled, did someone destroy the star? further scans reveal several hundred escape pod style vessels, they beam onboard injured people and send themto sickbay for treatment. The alien race explain what happened, a huge shade cloud engulfed their star systems sun and fed upon it, they tried to fight them but feeding on the Star made them too strong, the resulting shockwave wiped out their planet, a few people managed to leave the planet surface and maneuver through the shockwaves but over 16 Billion people are dead. The alien race known as the Josei tell the Sisko crew that the only weapon capable of defeating a shade are Chronoton based weapons which the USS Sisko does not posess, in exchange for allowing safe passage on their ship to a Josei colony they will happily upgrade the Siskos deflector dish to emit a high intensity chronoton pulse. The Captain of the Sisko agrees and transports hundreds of Josei to their colony where they upgrade the Sisko with the Chronoton weapon.

More episode synopsis to follow.

See, if you'd put that all in the first post it would have been much better. But I still don't know anything much about the personality of the characters :- okay, so your Captain is female and Japanese, but what is she like as a Captain? Is she like Kirk, Picard, Sisko or Janeway or a mix of them?

Why the "U.S.S. Sisko"?

I'd go with something a little less 'fanboy' & go with something like the U.S.S. Archimedes, U.S.S. Vonnegut-C, or something less battle-centric. The U.S.S. Navajo or U.S.S. Stockholm. Just my $0.02

I meant to bring up the Sisko thing too. I doubt Starfleet would comission a ship in 2375 after someone who, at that point, is just a Captain. Albeit a well respected Captain. If you wanna go with the theme of naming the ship after a starship Captain, go with the Archer, the Harriman, the Garrett or the Kirk or even the Decker as none of those people are alive at the tail end of the DS9 timeframe.

Hmmm, I guess you're right, I like the USS Archer so i'll go with that thanks. :techman:

I'm currently in the middle of trying to write the first episode as a story but it'll probably take me a while, in the meantime i'll see about writing some more episode synopsis.
I've got quite a lot of ideas for the series, lots of cool things that happen and plenty of unexpected plot twists but i'm trying to figure out how to fit it all together into a series so bare with me :vulcan: plus i'll see about giving more character info.

EPISODE 3

Whilst back en-route to the Iconian Homeworld the USS Archer is forced to drop out of warp, a shade cloud is detected dead ahead but it's size and composition is much smaller to the one that destroyed the Iconian base Ship and wiped out the Josei Star system. The Captain orders red alert, to raise shields and to charge the Chronoton pulse when sensors detect that it is moving on an intercept course for the Archer, as the cloud gets closer the Zakdorn Tactical officer notes an increase in the energy emitted by the cloud, a large bolt of blue electrical type energy shoots from the cloud and strikes the Archer causing shields to drop by 25%. The captain orders to return fire but just as the deflector is about to fire the pulse the deflector overloads and shorts out leaving the Archer without a chronoton weapon. The Captain orders the launch of Quantum torpedos but when the torpedos detonate on target the cloud merely feeds on the energy from the blast and fires again bringing the ships shields down to 50%. The Archer once again has no alternative but to retreat, they set course at warp 9 but the cloud manages to keep in pursuit, the cloud slowly begins to close in on the Archer and the engineering team must work quickly to fix the deflector dish. As time runs out the engineering team fix the deflector but the cloud opens fire again knocking the ship out of warp, the Archer picks up a nearby asteroid field on sensors and maneuvers through it trying to keep out of range of weapons lock of the Shade cloud. Just as the Shade cloud readys itself for another shot the Deflector charges the chronoton beam, the Archer pulls a 180 degree evasive maneuver bringing it face to face with the cloud and opens fire with the pulse, the Shade cloud is hit by the pulse and a large portion of the cloud breaks off into what appears to be a glass like substance, the shade cloud clearly took critical damage and retreats out of the asteroid field and to warp. The Captain decides to beam the glass fragments onboard to study them, to try and find out what they're dealing with. The Archer heads back on course for the Iconian homeworld and the results conducted on the glass fragments shows the glass like substance is made of a compound never before seen and shouldnt even exist in this universe.

EPISODE 4

The Archer reaches the star system where they believe the Iconian homeworld may be located only to discover its merely a small outpost colony, they beam down to the surface where they are greeted by Iconian soldiers who escort them to the outpost leader. The captain of the Archer requests information to the whereabouts of the Iconian homeworld in order to request official assistance and information from the Iconian Senate since its the fault of the Iconians that the Archer was transported back in time, after hours of heated discussion the outpost leader decides to give the Captain the location of the Iconian homeworld but it's location is shown to be far out in the Delta Quadrant, a journey of over 80 years for the Archer to reach at Maximum warp. The captain decides to request access to the Iconian gateway system to reach Iconia which is met with aggressive resistance by the outpost leader and the Archer is ordered out of the system immediately. As the crew are about to leave they are secretly contacted by an Iconian on the surface who tells them that if they do him a favour he will give them the location of a subspace corridor that will get them to Iconia in a matter of hours, the Captain reluctantly agrees and the Iconian beams onboard. Their mission is to locate a planet at the co-ordinates given and to scan the planet surface for an energy signature but when they input the iconian co-ordinates into the ships computer the crew are shocked to see the location of the planet is Earth. When the Captain confronts the iconian as to what the energy signature will be the iconian says his brother visited the planet weeks ago to run a routine survey of the indigenous life but never returned through the gateway when scheduled to do so, if his brother is indeed still on the planet then the energy signature from his mobile power unit will be detectable from orbit. The Archer sets course for Earth and the Iconian is given some quarters. upon arrival the Archer enters orbit of Earth and begins to run scans of the surface and detects a powerful energy signature, the science officer however is suspicious, the energy signature is too large to merely be a mobile power unit and is pulsating rapidly, when the Iconian enters the bridge instead of the usual kind and warm person the crew first met this time the Iconian is weilding a weapon and demands all the crew to be locked away in their quarters, the Captain tries to talk sense into the iconian but the iconian fires his weapon at her, the energy bolt hits her chest causeing her body to vapourise into a fireball like a flame does to paper and her bones turned to ashes before the bridge crews eyes. A shocked first officer decides to do as he says and orders all crew to report to their quarters immediately, the Iconian then tells the bridge crew to be locked away in the brig. Everything appears to be going according to plan for the iconian but he doesn't realise that a member of the Archer crew secretly beamed to the surface to the location of the energy signature, when the Iconian arrives on the surface he finds a human crewman holding a crystal artifact and a phaser pointing at it, the iconian explains he found it on a routine survey of the planet but only recently figured out what it was. He's explains its a container that holds the remaining energy force of an energy being, the energy being itself is dead but before it died it locked its energy and abilities away in the artifact and has been locked away there for millenia acting like a distress beacon for others of it's kind but others of it's kind never found it, should the energy be released it will search for another vessel to contain itself in and it will go straight into a humanoid body. The person would gain magnificant abilities and would literally become godlike. The crewman decides such powers shouldn't be allowed to fall into mortal hands, especially into the hands of a mad man and opens fire with the phaser but the phaser merely vapourises the container and the energy is released directly into the crewmans body. The power from the artifact is too overwhelming for a human and the crewman looses all sense of morality, the new Godlike crewman tells the Iconian that a new age has dawned, the galaxy will cowar in fear at his power. the iconian shoots his weapon at the crewman but the weapon has no effect, the crewman retaliates by shooting golden bolts of energy from his eyes at the Iconian killing him instantly. Meanwhile onboard the Archer the crew are able to get out of the brig with help from other crew members, they detect the crewman on the surface and beam him aboard. The now godlike crewman stuns the crew unconcious, shuts down the warp engines and makes his way to the shuttlebay where he steals a shuttle and sets off away from the ship, he sends one last message to the Archer before he leaves, "I have given you a choice between life and death, come after me and you will have chosen death." with that final message he sets off at warp and the crew of the Archer are left adrift, they beam up the dead Iconian and fix the warp engines but the Shuttle has disapeared from sensors. The Archer heads back to the Iconian outpost colony to return the dead Iconian, when they arrive the Iconian authorities identify the dead man as a deranged scientist who they claim was suffering from dementia. Following news of the death of the captain of the Archer the Iconian colony leader decides to compromise and gives the Archer crew the location of a subspace corridor. A funeral of the captain takes place and the remaining ashes of the captain are placed inside a torpedo caseing and fired out into the star of the Iconian colony system. On the bridge the first officer sits in the captains chair and orders the ship to leave orbit and set course for the subspace corridor.

EPISODE 5

En-route to the subspace corridor the Archer begins to suffer from power losses throughout the ship including life support on decks 4 through 7, the chief engineer runs several level one diagnostics but can't work out what the problem is. As the Archer continues to suffer from power losses they receive an incoming transmission from a Borelli tradesman requesting permission to dock as his ship keeps suffering power losses. The new captain of the Archer gives permission and hopes to be able to work together to solve the puzzle as to why both ships are suffering the same problem. The tradesman appears to be quite friendly and immediately begins trying to haggle with the crew to purchase or trade some belongings but the captain is far from keen. The tradesman explains the power losses seem to be effecting ships throughout the entire sector and he believes he's figured out the cause of the problem, a moon in a nearby star system is emmitting large bursts of anti tetryons through subspace which is effecting power distribution on passing starships and suggests the Archer goes and investigates, the captain is reluctant to do so because the closer to the moon they get the more powerful the power losses so he asks for other suggestions, when the chief engineer comes up with a plan to use the shield emitters to emit a thin tetryon shield around the ship whilst it passes through the sector the tradesman suddenly becomes fidgety and tells the crew it wont work as he's already tried it, the chief engineer however is willing to give it a go anyway and proceeds to create the shield. As the crew work to erect the shield the tradesman decides to part ways with the Archer and leaves the shuttle bay in his ship. The tetryon shield works and power losses throughout the ship stop but within just twenty minutes of pain free travel the Archer finds itself under attack by 6 vessels, all of which fit the exact same profile as the trademans vessel, the Archer raises normal shields but the tetryon shield weakens them to 50% normal strength, the trademan opens a channel and identifies himself as Harrius Con leader of the Borelli piratesguild and that the Archer is now Borelli property and will be taken to bits and sold as spare parts and scrap metal to other Borelli customers. The Archer returns fire with phasers but the Borelli ships weapons (Quantum resonance charges) are more superior and inflict heavy damage on the Archers shields, the captain decides to fire torpedos and the photon and Quantum torpedos manage to cripple two of the ships but the others continue to open fire. The Archers tactical officer makes a suggestion to head towards the moon and use the deflector dish to fire a large tetryon beam to knock out the anti-tetryon emitters in order to raise shields back to maximum power. The captain orders the course correction and they fire on the moons emmiters rendering them useless, the 4 remaining ships are finally crippled and all the pirates are beamed aboard and placed in the brig, the Archer having suffered heavy damage uses the pirate moon base to make repairs and even discovers a piece of technology the pirates obtained from another vessel that wasn't as lucky to escape the pirates attacks, the piece of technology is a cloaking device. The captain and senior staff all discuss and agree with eachother that under the circumstances and the fact the Romulan empire doesn't even exist yet that they should fit the Archer with the cloaking device, they agree that they should attempt to keep a low profile until they can find a way back to the future, the engineering team fit the cloaking device but power consumption for the device means it can only be operated as and when required. As for the pirates the captain orders the destruction of the Moon base and beam the pirates onto one of their pirate vessels that has had its weapons removed, the captain tells them to change their ways and bids them farewell but the pirate leader tells the Archer crew that they have made an enemy out of the Borelli piratesguild and that they will meet again very soon. The Archer sets course again for the subspace corridor leaving the pirates behind.

EPISODE 6

The chief engineer orders a meeting to discuss what she believes is a way back home, she's been studying the chronoton emmitter on the deflector dish and believes that a big enough burst of chronometric particles focused at a single point in space could puncture a hole in spacetime and open a temporal vortex, the stronger the burst the further in time the ship would travel. The captain gives the go ahead for a trial run and to prepare a sensor probe to obtain more detailed information. The chief engineer makes the relevant modifications and fires the chronometric particle beam into space, as the beam increases in power an opening in spacetime begins to appear and a probe is sent through the hole and begins to send back information, the hole begins to collapse but the probe makes it back. Upon closer inspection of the data obtained from the probe it shows some startling information, the probe received and transferred a computer programme which begins to hack into the Archers computer system and upload hundreds of files, as the probe finishes the upload it burns out. All attempts to access the files or delete them prove futile and the crew can do nothing but sit back and see what happens next. As the crew continue their daily routines they notice something different about the ships computer, it seems to be acting different, as though it's got a mind of its own. The captain of the Archer decides to ask the computer a question, "who are you", to everyones amazement the computer gives an unexpected reply, "I am the Artificially Intelligent Interactive First Contact System". Upon further questioning it is made clear that the hole through time jumped forward by 20,000 years, a nearby star system harbouring a now primitive species called the Xendo in 20,000 years advances into a technologically advanced race which detects the temporal vortex and transmits the first contact program through the probe, the FC program is happy to give information about the race that created it as that is what it's mission objective is. The FC program begins talking with the crew and after 5 days the crew begin to feel at ease with the FC program treating it like another one of the crew, the FC programme even visits people in the holodeck as a holographic projection of a humanoid and gets involved in playing games. As the 7th day draws to a close the FC program contacts the captain and tells him the time has come to leave, it requests access to another probe where it can download to and asks to be dropped off on one of the moons in the Xendo system. Before it leaves it lets the crew in on one last piece of information, the Xendo already knew about the crew of the Archer before the vortex even opened, in 19,000 years the Xendo find the probe buried beneath the surface of one of the moons in the Xendo system, they download the information held within it and learn all about the Archer and it's crew 19,000 years in the past, the Xendo sent through the FC program to ensure the temporal circle continued. The Archer crew bid farewell to the Fc program and launch the probe. Due to the last week of events the captain decides to put the test on the temporal vortex on hold for the time being and orders the helmsman to set course for the subspace corridor again.

Considering the vast difference in technology, any lengthy survival of the Federation ship, especially if the Iconians were really gunning for them, would be unlikely.

Which is what makes it interesting. We've never really seen the Feddies dealing with being totally outclassed in a fight over a long period of time (except for the Borg, which just goes to prove, the writers need to play fair and not give the Feddies a helping hand via arbitrary ass-saves).

Also: no fussing over "restoring the timeline." In the case of the Iconians, nobody really knows enough to say for sure how history is supposed to go, so that allows the boring, tired timelne-restoration angle to be thrown out the airlock from the start.

So. If Capt Hanako is dead, that means 1st Officer Lester is now Acting Capt correst? Who gets his place?
Also, I think it wouuld be cool if the Andorian officer is a desc of Shran.
Keep writing, man, keep writing!
