Star Trek Ends Theatrical Run

Star Trek has better WOM and Reviews than the first Pirates. Better Reviews than IM and as good WOM. Same with Begins.

Trek 2 is going to be huge, DVD/Blu-Ray sales should be stellar

This movie had very long legs for IMAX, that 28 million would have been higher too if it had played at all IMAX screens when it opened which means next time all the IMAX screens will get it for opening, equalling massive front loaded sales. It needs to play 1 month solid at release next time out, and that's going to be tough to book. But hopefully they remember the success of this one over other movies that played on IMAX in 2009.

It never played even once at my local IMAX, so I never got to see it in IMAX :sigh:

That's weird. Is your IMAX in a regular theatre or at a science/tech center?

No it's embedded in one of those super multi-complexs with around 20 theaters. And they felt that playing Monster VS Aliens around 1 1/2 months into it's run would be better than playing Star Trek when it was released, how stupid can they be?

Yeah, that's dumb.

Actually, in talking with the manager of the theater, seems like it isn't just "repeat business" that's keeping Star Trek at the theater; it includes a healthy measure of word of mouth on a very small-town, local scale.

A few years ago, I went to a great "Lord of the Rings" trilogy screening at a tourist attraction IMAX which, traditionally, had only been a cinema used for those IMAX-only touristy documentaries. These days they do as many commercial films as they do IMAX docos. The first film started after lunch, was followed by a break for pizza - catered by the cinema and included in the price - then there was a coffee break between movies II and III. We were driving back home in the wee hours of the next morning, thoroughly satisfied.

My point being, people can make requests for future presentations at IMAX, people can organise theatre parties, etc. If you want to see STXI at your local IMAX there are ways and means. It's worth sussing out the manager of your local IMAX and planting the idea of a ST-related "special event" gig.

Personally I'd love to see a double feature of TMP and ST XI on IMAX.

The theater is in the Monterey Bay Acquarium area, and is usually showing Sharks 3D and similar movies.

Well, they had to do something to keep the tourists coming after their two humpback whales vanished in 1986.

They may well have been locked in contractually. "Monsters vs Aliens" was promoted as a family movie. Totally different demographic.

For the whole run of Star Trek?
Most other IMAX's weren't, either the manager of this IMAX didn't like Star Trek, or he/she severely underestimated it, and it's legs.

I dunno. Ring them and ask them.

If you visit a book shop and they aren't selling what you want to buy, and you walk out without saying what it was you were seeking, you can't blame the shop for not anticipating your purchase.

Maybe "Monsters vs Aliens" was packing in the crowds at that IMAX and they weren't sure if ST would have generated more or less than MvA? Or maybe there were no more IMAX prints available? Or maybe, yeah, the managers hates live-action science fiction? Hundreds of possibilities.

Try ringing, or writing, and ask why they've never scheduled the movie, even though its still running in some IMAXes.

That would definitely be cool, but also chancy for the theater, i.e., laying out leasing fees for the film assuming people would come, especially for TMP.

:vulcan: Indeed.

So far, Monday and Tuesday, ST 16+14, HP 6+6.

That's a GREAT idea and I would love to see it! However, considering that it's IMAX and with concerns about TMP's plentiful special f/x + STXI's shakey cam... I'd be worried about epileptic seizures :)

Almost $258 million domestic.

Kick. ASS.

TREK is not only back, its takin' names and gettin' laid!

I just checked, and our IMAX is also playing it through October 15. I might make it #22 this weekend.

Almost $258 million domestic.

fortunately, the box office totals outside of Canada + US were about $127 million. since the production budget of the film is reportedly in the $150 million range, the combined worldwide receipts earned Paramount a profit of about $80 million.

side note: given the revenue sharing deal between studios, distributors and move theatres, a film will have to earn about double its production costs for the studio to turn a profit during the theatrical run.

OMG!!!!! Incredible!!!! That it is still in some theaters is mind blowing and wonderful. Jeri, i would KILL to be able to go with you! I imagine if we were with each other, we would squeal throughout the movie like little girls!

Yeah... It'd be a blast! We might even have gotten ejected on the first weekend. :D Indranee and I used to threaten the same thing back in the early halcyon days of May. Don't know what happened to that girl.

I am now enjoying my DVD since the movie has been gone from our local theaters. The only thing lacking is the shared group experience. Now I can pick out details and rewind whenever I wish.
