Star Trek Discovery Writing Staff

DS9 is part of the Trek corpus, and handled the question of faith very well in the early years, before the Prophets vs. Pah Wraiths conflict became like something from a shallow fantasy series.

What makes DS9 stand out is that from the very start the Bajorans are basically shown their gods to be very real, while in real life humanity only has pure faith to rely on. I'm trying to recall when religion was tackled in Trek that didn't involve actual godlike beings like the Prophets, transdimensional aliens like the Sphere Builders, or just plain clusterfuck away missions like in "Who Watches the Watchers".

I'm sure theres an example in what 800 episodes we have.

[Ben Stien]Anyone? Anyone?[/Ben Stein]

Damn.
They're really commited to "add new writers that have written schlock-y Christian stuff that takes the bible literally" for the new season. Man, I can't wait on their profound and differentiated commentary on religion...
It will likely be uninspired and insipid.

The closest is probably the Klingons.

He has created a TV series called Dominion. Never even heard of it.
Nor I. A quick Wikipedia check shows it to be something involving a war between angels and humans, loosely based on the forgettable movie Legion, with low-to-middling reviews from critics and viewers.

(Granted, if Neil Gaiman were to write a series based on the above concept, I'm sure it would be awesome. But this guy clearly isn't Neil Gaiman.)

Seriously, it sounds more and more like the producers' angle on "faith" next year is going to involve something not unlike (and worse, respectful toward) evangelical Christianity. :shifty: Ugh.

How dare they do anything that might be respectful toward religion.

Well, yeah, basically.

But more specifically, respect for religious fundamentalism, and even more specifically for evangelical Christianity. That's a profoundly delusional and destructive worldview, and it's not the kind of nonsense I want to see in my science fiction. It is, even more specifically, antithetical to the kind of philosophical humanism Star Trek has traditionally and pointedly embodied.

So much for idic and having respect for others with differing opinions.

He's also written for Prison Break and Sons of Anarchy. I forget, are those schlock-y Christian stuff?
Trek connection he was in the TNG episode "Descent" as an uncredited extra.

That's been absent for a while.

It is still one of the principles of the federation and starfleet so any discussion in trek of relgion should come from the viewpoint of respect for others reigious beliefs even if starfleet doesn't agree with them.

I was responding more in regard to fan discussion of relgion. Obviously, there is varying opinion on the matter, and one I generally avoid online due the rather impersonal and flammable nature of such discussions.

In universe, yeah, I would expect IDIC and respect, but I don't really expect it from writers in Hollywood.

Also, as a general note, I love the assumption that someone who works on a Christian film must be a Christian. Just like everyone who works on Star Trek is a Star Trek fan, obviously O_O

and I'm approaching it from the in-universe side which is why to the person I was responding to who was upset that people who in his mind were christian writers being hired was a bad thing. If you want to do the subject justice having writers who have different opinions on the subject even if you personally disagree with some of them is only a good thing IMO and could make the arc better.

Does anyone really think the current crop of writers is going to depart from Trek's traditional take on the matter? I don't.

We just had a whole season devoted to affirming the values everyone knew they'd end up affirming. (Or at least paying poorly considered lip service to it.) I just can't see the point of it.

I hope they have more to say on the subject than I expect.
