'Discovery' is the series title - The word 'discovery' brings to mind imagery of exploration and adventure.

All that we have seen in trailers so far is war, death and destruction.

Should they have named the series after a famous naval warship instead? USS Vctory (ok we have already had that but it could be an earlier version!). USS Constitution? (maybe that's not politically correct anymore as some people see the constitution as being offensive these days haha), USS Alabama? USS Arizona? Why did they name the hero starship in a series about war 'Discovery' - I can't wait to find out!!

All of the recent short teasers have talked about exploration, values, tolerance, expanding our knowledge. They're certainly plugging that angle as well. So I'd imagine the answer is both. I've mentioned it in another thread, but I anticipate a theme of at least the first season to be "how do peaceful explorers deal with war".

What Q says at the end of All Good Things is what Star Trek means to me:

"...*That* is the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknown possibilities of existence."

It's vague enough where people can interpret it many different ways.

I'd love to see a trailer showing the crew of Discovery facing up to spatial anomalies, new life forms and new civilisations.... boldly going where we have never been before. All we are seeing is warfare with a worn out, staple Star Trek species/villain, not much exploration and discovery going on... don't get me wrong, I cannot wait for this series! It just seems a little bit... lost.

To be fair though, we have had 28 seasons of Trek that exhausted a lot of the exploration possibilities. If they really are doing something "fresh" with Discovery on the exploration front, it will be a really huge challenge to do so without retreading on past ideas. I can't wait either, but I think I may have screwed myself out of some enjoyment by rewatching DS9, TNG and part of TOC and Voyager in the past year.

Is the discovery of spatial anomalies, or of the human condition? Star Trek is usually about the former being a conduit for the latter.

"Discovery" is also a period of fact-finding in a court case. This show is going to be a legal procedural and feature Sam Cogley heavily. It's impressive how well they've kept his involvement in the show secret, but you mark my words. Denny Crane will make an appearance, too - he's the hand-off character. ;)

I think Star Trek should've had more Conflicts show that paradise aint always perfect. that's why i enjoyed the Xindi war and the Dominion War.

While I did enjoy the Dominion War storyline, I don't think Trek is at its strongest when dealing with war in the sense of actually showing combat occurring, or talking about tactics or 'warriors' (a word that should be banned from science fiction for no less than twenty years). What it can do, and has done, well is an exploration of the impact of war on individuals, the futility of the whole enterprise while simultaneously being trapped in it, and the famous old Star Trek cornerstone "your enemy is just like you". I hope Discovery focuses more on the theme of war than the practicality of it. I tire of pew pew quickly.

Binary polls like this are not super useful. I think Captain Lorca has a focus on the War aspects. Doing whatever it takes to end the war. But I think the crew of the ship will slowly figure out he is acting irrationally, and will "discover" aspects to the Klingons not known before, and exploration will win out, with the finalised USS Discovery crew in place at the end of the season ready to seek out new life etc.

As long as there is a glaring split infinitive used for dramatic effect in the opening voiceover, I'll be satisfied.

23 years ago, or so, my uncle and I made a kitbash of the 1701-A, because the pylons fell off.

I called it the USS Discovery as well. Like this show, I set its tenure during a period of conflict with the Klingons. Specifically, I made it a workhorse patrol ship that kept the peace in the wake of the Khitomer Accords. Though my Discovery-class was designed to be a fairly modular class, this particular ship, the namesake, would definitely get into fights. The damage I put into the model roughly mimicked the battle from Star Trek: VI.

Of course, I would like Star Trek to be about how we use war as an avenue of last resort, and how the principles of exploration enhance the ability to find common ground.

Strange how this topic is discussed so much in the SDCC and STLV writer and actor panels but it's not really noted here in the context of the other material we've seen from the show.

So is it a war show? Sure. Is it about exploration? Sure. Like some of the latter Trek shows, it's often about how ideals are tested and how they last after the fact.

The Klingons aren't going to be 2-dimensional here either. We'll get to see more culture and individual personalities. Ultimately both they and their dealings with the UFP will reflect the current political situation in the world today...and from what I hear, the UFP is not going to come out unscathed, they will have their foibles too.
