There’s also in all side canon that it said to be another star meaning that I’m not the only one who thinks so. While not canon it still needs to be approved by CBS.
Besides all that, I wish they ended the episode with them revealing what the sensor data said. Would have made a better cliffhanger

In terms of world building the Vulcans and Romulans, this was a terrific episode. I really hope we get to see more of them either this season or in season 4. The direct tie in with both TNG and Picard was also nice to see.

Burnham's mom being Qowat Milat was unexpected...and odd. I get why they wanted to have her there for Michael to be able to work through her issues but, still, you had Michael being adopted by Vulcans as a child and now her mom ends up being taken in by Romulan warrior nuns. That said, I am glad that they didn't go the direction of Gabrielle some how being the big bad of the season (as I've seen some speculate) and mastermind behind The Burn.

As for Tilly...yeah, count me amongst the people that's not really a fan of her being promoted to first officer. I enjoy Tilly but this promotion just hasn't been earned. It feels like a chess move by the writers in order for Adria to become Stamet's new protégé without shortchanging Tilly. My hope is because its only "acting" First Officer, we'll see some potential consequences about whether Saru actually made the right choice.

They were not placed in these positions by superior officers like Tilly was. It was a field commission by the captain because all senior officers were killed or mortally wounded, including the captain. So, not really comparable to this situation, because Tilly was promoted while the ship was in normal service with the chain of command, even above Saru, intact. I don't think that the decision to promote personell lies solely by the captain. At least that is not the way it works in real life sevices with a command structure.

There are more people on board Discovery with more experience and completed command training than only Tilly. There was an intact chain of command on that ship, so there has to be one already in third position who naturally should have made one step up.

Sure, they didn't get there the same way, but they were all cadets who also were captain, FO, etc.

Could have used the XO position to give a underused character some more screen time but sadly not. Airiam 1.0 for instance. She already has taken the seat a few times.

This episode was a great one, one of my favourites so far this season. I've given it a 9. I like the more slow episodes, with less action and explosions. Next week it's all bang bang again.

Starfleet did not know what happened because the acting captain still wanted to carry out their mission and maintain radio silence. But even after completing their task they did not return and made a catastrophic choice which got almost all of the crew killed.

Not comparable to Tillies promotion as I said before.

I am curious. The Romulans had an empire. So they had other planets to settle on when Romulus got destroyed. So if the Romulans reunified with the Vulcans, does that mean that the Vulcans took over the remaining Romulan controlled planets not destoryed by the supernova.

So the Vulcans and Romulans unified state could actually be an empire for a lack of a better word.

I’m glad I’m not the only Aussie that does the same thing! I hate waiting for it to upload to Netflix on Friday nights :wah:

Me too. Although I do like that Friday is 'sci-fi night' with both Discovery and The Mandalorian dropping

Burnham's smile when she realised just how instrumental Spock had been in reunifying the Vulcans and the Romulans really got me.

Great episode. Probably my favourite from the season.

The federation using dilithium is similar to our habit of using gasoline for over a century even though we will eventually run out of it one day

True but Dilithium isn’t a power source. That’s deuterium

So, just to be clear. If Captain Saru is incapacitated for some reason - say, while the ship is under fire ... command of the Discovery - the most valuable ship in The Federation - falls to Ensign Tilly: a neurotic, uncertain and inexperienced young officer with (IIRC) little to no command experience (save for playing her genocidal counterpart in the Mirror Universe).

    Awesome.

She might actually be all right. I've noticed, even in real life, that the ones who act or seem like they know everything often know far less than they pretend to, and the ones who seem out of step know a lot more than you might think.

Regardless, she's still an ensign and boosting Tilly at the expense of other more senior officers (Nilsson, Owo, Rhys, Bryce) isn't exactly a good way to boost morale for those officers.

I love this scene. Fantastic dialogue between the 2 characters. Especially when Data and Spock comment on how they both have what the others want.
