I liked the harmonious planet with a consciousness concept. Nice to get back to some exploring.
But this episode has a big problem.
NONE OF IT MAKES ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER?!?
Oh hey, there’s L’rell and the admiral joining forces... Good stuff! But oh noes! The bad Klingons show up! They start fighting, L’Rell says the admiral is dead, despite us hearing her gasp, so she offers to “get rid of the body” by taking her to the storeroom where Klingons apparently keep corpses*?!?
And next scene with L’Rell she’s all “whoops, sorry boss! The corpse escaped!”
*(How DID they ever manage to become a spacefaring species?! It’s a miracle they haven’t been wiped out many times over, with such poor hygiene?! If Starfleet wants to win the war, the most prudent course would be just to kick back, and let epidemics wipe out the Klingon fleet!)
The A-plot of the episode doesn’t fare much better. After discovering the planet is sentient, Burnham & Co. can’t use their crystal transmitter without getting permission from the planet. All of a sudden Saru avoids the question whether they GOT permission and is all “Yeah, sure they’ll let us do whatever!”
Burnham and Tyler are convinced Saru “has been compromised” so she runs off to use the transmitter. If Saru “got compromised” then how do they know they really got permission? Why can’t Saru know about their plan? NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE!!
