Star Trek: Dimensional Shift

Starfleet has discovered that after creating an artificial singularity they can create doorways to alternate dimensions depending on the Quantum frequency of the singularity. As the frequency changes the closer it comes to connecting to an alternate dimension the singularity locks into place and becomes stable for Starship travel, allowing Starships to pass through the singularity and explore other dimensions such as Fluidic Space.
After succesfully testing the technology and passing safety protocols Starfleet command gives the go ahead to send a ship through to explore alternate dimensions. The Starfleet Science Academy suggests a new class of vessel be constructed and the technology incorporated directly into the ship from scratch in order to have a more efficient working model.

The new vessel is constructed and sets off to explore alternate dimensions.

Now the series will either have the starship return home after each dimensional shift, after a few dimensional shifts OR something will happen where the ship dimensionally shifts at random due to a malfunction and they have to keep shifting in order to try and get back home but due to power requirements the ship can only dimensionally shift every 12 hours. My personal thought is maybe after an attack by some strange weapon the device which uses Quadlithium crystals loses the ability to create a specific frequency on subsequent uses and since they are in different dimensions Quadlithium crystals don't exist meaning they can't get their hands on replacement parts.

During one of the dimensional shift the singularity loses a connection as the ship passes through stranding the ship into a place of pure darkness, some kind of void between dimensions. Within this void an evil exists that manages to escape the void when the ship dimensionally shifts again after 12 hours. This evil powerful entity becomes the big recurring bad "guy" (not actually a guy) of the series.

Just so I'm clear on this, these are not parallel universes or alternate universes where there are alternate members of the crew. These are completely different separate dimensions of existance.

Having the alternate dimensions be really wacky and imaginative and often terrifying would make this idea worthwhile. What's this 'bad guy" all about and what would keep the audience from losing interest quickly? Does he follow Our Heroes back into their original dimension (and on to others) and if so, why?

I'd have Our Heroes keep control over their dimensional sojourns. Having it be out of their control is too contrived - you'll end up with a forced Dimension of the Week format.

Exactly. The fact they are different Dimensions means anything goes. I mean we've had the wackyness of Fluidic space and with great and imaginative minds behind the series we could have far more wackier and interesting Dimensions.

I'm still thinking it up. So far the only idea I can think of is that the entity uses a part of itself to possesses one of the crew in order to jump dimensionally and get a foothold outside the void between dimensions. It has the ability to expand itself, each time it multiplies it's not a separate entity, but itself. Another way of describing it would be that it can take control of multiple hosts and still be only one single entity. Before it can multiply itself it needs time to expand itself. The crewman it possesses remains onboard the ship in order to spread itself around all the dimensions that the ship visits.
It's sort of a sleeping waiting 'bad guy' to begin with. We all watch the thing expanding itself throughout dimensions whilst the crew is completely unaware.
It's ultimate goal is to conquer all universes and all dimensions and connect to every living thing in order to feed from them. In the void it is weak, trapped there for millions of years in hybernation.

A more detailed explanation would be that it possesses some people in order to use them as pawns, it uses tentacle like arms to spread out and connect to living organisms to feed from them. The easiest way to feed from them is when they are angry or in fear and so it uses the pawns to incite wars and such.

When it reaches the home dimension of the Starfleet crew it begins to create pawns within Starfleet to incite war. The same happens in all the dimensions that Starfleet visits.
The entity eventually takes over more of the crew of the ship and starts to create conflict with the crew which is when they realise something is up.

Yes I agree. I want them to jump back 'home' every few Dimensional jumps. Having them jump back each jump would get tedious but being able to go home

This could be interesting if the critter is smart, with a lay-in-wait strategy. The audience knows it's joined the crew but the critter isn't dumb like they so often are, tipping its hand early. It realizes that the dimensional ship gives it access to other dimensions (maybe it can break off parts of itself and infect other dimensions as it goes).

As its host, the Starfleet crew should actually be the least threatened by the critter - it wants to keep them unawares of what it's doing. Maybe it could subtly change them in some way, change their DNA or their brain functions, infecting them so that they become dependent on it for survival, but unaware until it becomes too late. That way when they inevitably do become aware of its existence, it could still maintain control over them.

A more detailed explanation would be that it possesses some people in order to use them as pawns

I'd like to see this done in such a way that the other crew members don't realize what's happening - the changes are slow and subtle, so that they never raise any red flags.

One of the Dimensions they come across is a universe controlled entirely by an AI machine similar to skynet. It creates AI ships to spread out into its universe to seek out and control planets with biological life. It doesn't do it to destroy biological life but to instead look after it like a guardian. It quarantines entire planets and civilisations and keeps them at a low technological level. It believes that biological life is flawed and childlike and must be parented.
When Starfleet surveys this dimension the AI is able to scan the ship and obtain Dimension jumping technology. Thanks to Starfleet the AI decides that other dimensions must be parented and begins building a dimensional jump gate.

I'd limit the threats like that to just our pan-dimensional critter...they're all just variations on the same fascist control-freak mold (of which the Borg will always be the champs) and we don't want to siphon any threat-ness away from our main baddie.

It's a bit Dr Who and Stargateish though isn't it IaL?

No.

Not at all, because in the end to defeat both badies the good guys have to find a way to turn them on eachother. ;)

That really doesn't solve the problem that they come off as redundant. Why not come up with a very different baddie type and then pit those against each other?

A bit like Sliders then in the late 90's.

Not like Sliders at all my friend. Sliders had 4 people jumping between parallel universes. This will be a Starship, in the future, with a full crew, jumping between other Dimensions. Parallel universes and Dimensions aren't the same.

I don't recall the Sliders popping out into anything like Fluidic space. ;)

Better than fail.

But it does smack a bit of Quantum Leap/Sliders/Stargate in the most general of senses. Sounds extraordinarily expensive though.

MY NEW IDEA FOR THE AREA BETWEEN DIMENSIONS.

The crew enter the area between dimensions by accident and discover it filled with enormous Particle fountains and enormous amounts of raw matter in the form of massive nebulae. The entire dimension is devoid of life with no stars and no planets. The crew eventually conclude that the particle fountains are like white holes aka the opposite of blackholes and that supermassive blackholes in other dimensions are punching through to into the area between dimensions and depositing the matter that falls into the supermassive blackholes.

When Starfleet finds out about this area between dimensions they begin a project to try and teleport an entire star system into this area in order to have a safe fall back position should the Federation ever fall.

Back to posting crappy fanfic ideas now that no one is taking your conspiracy theory nonsense seriously eh Tacky?
