I watched Dr. Zhivago on Netflix last week which would have been showing in theatres during the production of Star Treks first season and noticed a shot which appears to have influenced Star Trek director Vince McEveety..

It was also done in "The Doomsday Machine," when Kirk sees Decker die. The bts anecdote is that Shatner suggested the light be only across his eyes, so he could lower them into darkness. I think that account was in one of David Gerrold's books; he was on the set during the run-up to filming "Tribbles."

Yeah, as mentioned upthread, this sort of lighting on the face has been a part of film language since at least the 1940s.
