Was there ever any reasons given why DS9 did not begin in the fall of 1992, rather than winter (mid season) of 1993? Not enough material? Complicated sets?
I don't know, Idid see the DS9 premiere though (Just as I did TNG). Maybe the studio had a truncated budget the first year. They did the same thing with Voyager.
Voyager also premiered mid-season. I'd guess that it was to give more time for production. Sci-fi sets, costumes, make-up, props, etc... must be pretty time consuming to create. You can't really use many off-the-rack items, after all.
It was done so it would get more media attention, and not get lost among all the network premiers. The Untouchables TV series (also a syndicated series from Paramount) started at the same time as DS9. It's a strategy that paid off as it resulted in record ratings for DS9. UPN tried the same strategy a couple of years later, starting their network in January.
