Star Trek Deep Space Nine And Their Replicators

It's a huge station, and O'Brien is the only person who ever actually gets his hands dirty fixing things! Plus everything that goes wrong with every ship in the sector.

Okay, Rom joined engineering eventually and there were other engineers shows sometimes but 95% of everything that got fixed on the station or ships was up to O'Brien. And he doesn't even get a commission. He's the one who needs a union.

The people writing DS9 wanted to show that there were corners of the ST universe that were not perfect. So we got Miles frequently bitching about faulty replicators. In one episode, a replicator was actually booby trapped and I think killed a crewman. While watching week to week, for seven years, this kind of element annoyed me. Couldn't something else break? Couldn't a Cardassian drink something other than Kanar? Couldn't just once a Klingon refuse blood wine saying alcohol poisons the warriors strength or something? DS9 was full of these little recurring elements, and in the case of Morn, I thought he worked as a successful running gag. However, at the beginning of the year, I did a complete DS9 rewatch, episode to episode, and burned through the whole thing in a couple of weeks. None of these things bothered me. They were just atmosphere.

That was a hold over from TNG. I remember Arsenio Hall talking about how Worf looked like he had an anus for a forehead on his show, and then Worf discovered prune juice. I enjoyed that running gag.

And then Hall's late night show was cancelled. Never mess with The Dorn. ;-)
