Star Trek Crew #5 comic (Spoilers)

TigerOfDarkness

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Hi, anyone read issue 5 of the Star Trek Crew comic?

It's a story of the Enterprise comanded by Captain April. As you might expect from a comic dedicated to the memory of Majel Barret Roddenberry it features her Number One character but this is before she was Number One (Lt. Pike is "Number One" at this time).
The artwork is by John Byrne and the likenesses are not bad at all (Spock aside). I rather enjoyed it, what do people think?

I haven't read issue #5 yet.

I've really enjoyed the series. I think my favorite issue may have been the Bradbury-esque issue with the abandoned colony that suddenly isn't so abandoned. Byrne's done an excellent job creating a classic sci-fi feel to the stories. If he did more in this vein, I would be thrilled. :)

Unfortunately, this was the first issue I've seen and the shop didn't have any back issues. I assumed from the title that they would feature different characters in each issue - am I wrong?

You're not wrong. Each issue is self-contained, with Number One being the common element, and each story is set some time after the previous story. You can read one issue for a good story on its own terms, or you can read all five and get a look at the breadth of Number One's career.

I have all 5 issues but I'm kind of lost on this one through. Spock wasn't aboard the Enterperise when April was in command from what I know of. He was picked by Captain Pike. I know this is centered on Number One but I thought I would bring it up if anyone else didn't notice it.

Spock was in the Cage, Pike was in the Cage, ergo, Spock was on Enterprise when Pike was in command.

I've been picking up almost all of the trek comics that IDW has ben publishing but not this one or any of Byrne's Romulan ones for that matter. I've never really been a John Byrne fan at all. Has his stuff been worth reading? I'd consider picking up a TPB of one of his IDW trek books...maybe...:shifty:

I think Byrne's Romulan work is merely okay. Assignment: Earth was a lot of fun. Crew is among the best Trek comics IDW has done.

That's not gospel. One novel (Vulcan's Glory) and one comic (Early Voyages) have conjectured that Spock came aboard after Pike was already captain, but we have no canonical information to rule out an alternative interpretation. Tie-ins are only required to conform to canon; consistency with other tie-ins is entirely optional.

The Which Way book Star Trek: Voyage to Adventure featured an adventure where you, the young Ensign, get thrown back in time to April's Enterprise because of a shipboard experiment by Mr. Spock. You have to enlist the help of Spock's younger self to get back.

So according to that book, Mr. Spock was a young officer on board the Enterprise when April was in command.

^I used to have Voyage to Adventure!

And I had a Doctor Who Which-Way book that freaked me out because the reader was addressed as "Chris." How did they know?????

I used to have VtA too. It was much better than the second book, Phaser Fight. Not only were the adventures lame in Phaser Fight but the artwork wasn't as good as VtA.

I wished someone used my name in a Which Way book; I'm jealous.

^I have never heard of a woman whose given name was Ryan.

It became popular in the United States as a female name sometime in the 1970s. Nevertheless, Ryan is still predominately a male name.

I've met a few in my time. There was a Ryan Marie in my MFA program. Then my ex-girlfriend's female boss is named Ryan. I've also met a girl named Rian, pronounced Ryan, once.

Had my mother been hip and had I been a girl, she could've just kept the same name instead of her "girl" choice--Renee. Then again, drop an "e" and that could be a male name too.
