Star Trek Convention Cancelled DURING Event

I tend to like smaller conventions, but more because of my phobia of crowds than anything else. :)

I don't think it's totally impossible to get some face-time with stars. I used to go into a convention hotel after-hours, and hang out in the hotel bar. Great way to get to know actors and get to talk to them all you want over drinks. To me, that was much more fun (and this was a big convention).

My local favorites in Florida are Necronomicon in Tampa (well, now St. Petersburg), and Oasis in Orlando.

I'm a regular Vulkon attendee (you'll have to look me up next month, Michael!) and I find that, depending on the friendliness of the actors present,) one can have a bit of time with various stars.

Some of them come to the bar and hang out and are very friendly to the fans (Connor Trinnear, for example) and others are smokers who will interact with you when they're out front having a smoke.

Of course, some prefer not to hang with fans when they're "off the clock" and that's fine too.

But it's the ones who do that make things fun. You've not been to a Trek convention until you hear Dominick Keating singing off-key during "karaoke night".

He's extremely funny (and was underused in Enterprise,) but can't sing to save his life!

I kind of feel sorry for him after all this. It's just complete inexperience, more than any malicious intent.

I don't feel sorry. He took the plunge when good sense would have cancelled that show. Having listened to the interview, it is interesting how my speculations were pretty much the way it went down.

Weel, again as with any other account, that is his accounting for events. I'm not believing a word coming out of anyone in regards to this; simply because we don't have access to objective information in order to judge the reality behind the failure.

As for feeling sorry for him: Nope, not a single tear. Hopefully he's took something from this experience, but I seriously doubt it; so perhaps the various repercussions well finally amek him stop and think.

.
No surprise there. It's obvious you won't be happy until you have his head on your own personal platter.

There wasn't any part of his interview that screamed bullshit to me. It just sounds like a guy who never did a con before who is taking on the responsability that he rightly should for the failure of this event.

I was one of the people who got my money back last year, when I heard from Connor Trinneer's manager at an event in the UK that he was not signed "officially" for FedconUSA at that moment in time. I did get my money back after a few weeks.
I hope that everyone who did go to the event will get their money back too.

I feel lucky that I did, as a few years ago in the UK, a guy called Manny Patel took money from many UK Trek fans promising a fantastic convention in London (E1) which never materialized. I never saw a penny back of my £150! (Approx. $300). I took the b*stard to Court and won my case against him. So did many other people I found out later, who to this day have never seen any of their money. I post this as a warning, as this guy (allegedly) jumps on the band wagon of anything that's popular to try to organize an event based on it. I don't want to see any one else screwed out of their hard earned cash!

Oh please, if I wanted his head on a platter I wouldn't be more interest in the facts of the matter over everyone's, not just his, personal BS stories on who's to blame. Every take is going to be slanted one way or the other, and it's all going to have a measure of bullshit to it.

Give me a copy of the contracts, complete texts of the e-mails, and transcripts of the phone calls exchanged, and then I'll say we can get to an objective conclusion as to to the facts of the matter. Otherwise, everyone involved on both sides of the situation (hotel and organizers) is just blowing some level of smoke out their collective asses.

Um, yeah..as soon as they hand over all the contracts and those emails to you, get back to us. Otherwise the only one blowing smoke is you.

both fan run non profits i believe.
world con also is non profit.

Is there a fan site that lists and rates various ST gatherings?

there is a convention calendar at the top of the meet up forum

as for rating i dont know of a central place .

So did I. I'm so glad I did. Two friends who would have been coming from England were also refunded.

Unfortunately, not all of us learned our lesson, because two of us are signed for Jumpcon (Stamford, the second event on their schedule) and they announced just last week that they had hired "experienced" con organizers (having learned something from FedConUSA).

Now the new staff are rearranging guest lineups for some of the earlier conventions to spread them out a bit time-wise and geographically -- I am NOT kidding!

And they're offering refunds and letting people -- those with very loose schedules who can just swap out one city and weekend for another -- change their purchases.

Incredible!

Yeah. We've both been posting over there. Happy campers, we're not. They dropped the guest list from 47 to 7 at the first convention, and apparently they still haven't sold 20 tickets total. Gee, wonder why?

Train Wreck, party of Shane, your table's waiting.

I've been bringing up the low ticket sales for weeks over there. All I get are unsupported assurances the high number of tickets that are still available -- on their own web site! -- is not an indicator of sales.

I'm reminded of a saying from the old country (some of my ancestors came from there)....
"Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me."

It seems appropriate these days.

Looks like just the first two for now (the ones due at the beginning of July).

Of the 20 scheduled as of a few days ago, fully half have already been canceled. Of the remaining ones still listed, what I'm hearing is it's only a matter of time before this completely implodes.

Oh, and I found this Emperor Jackass's website, and I truly LOVE the "About Me" section. This is what he says about himself:

"All across the country he has a reputation of zero tolerance for stupidity or incompetence."

A mirror, he has not seen.
